Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch trademarks suspended by USPTO

It's pretty crazy that eventually we're just gonna run out of relevant names for games.

In 20 years every game will be a variation of INFINITE UNDISCOVERY.

Couldn't find a way to cut off the head of the dwarfen dude

Photoshop him to stand on a crate. Games are going to have crates anyway, might as well make this one's time-to-crate rating negative by putting a crate on the (virtual) game box.

Forgive me for having such a naive view on the legal system but I thought you can't trademark words in the English language?

You can't trademark the word, but you can trademark the name of your game. Since someone else is using as their game's name, Blizz can't call their game the same thing. Take Halo for example. MS does not own the word "halo", but they own Halo as a game/comic/movie/TV series/ect. name and nobody else can make a game/movie/comic/ect. and name it Halo.

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
This is a rough one. Blizzard was clearly very hyped about the name and the whole cinematic was made to introduce players to the name. You could tell they had a lot of genuine enthusiasm for the IP.

Sympathetic to those guys, that would be a real let down.

Couldn't Blizzard just buy the name? While true they can rename it, it would still be a downer due to their passionate promotion of the IP during Blizzcon.

Looking more closely... this was all settled months ago before this thread was even posted. They're going to both keep using Overwatch, for their respective products.

The amendment is necessary pursuant to a separate co-existence agreement entered into by the applicant and a third- party. The party has indicated an intent to challenge the description of goods/services as originally filed by the applicant, unless the applicant makes the proposed amendment to the category description. The proposed amendment is within the scope of the original filing, and includes discreet language modifications that will prevent customer confusion between the marks.

So, last summer, Blizzard challenged Innovis, and Innovis agreed to change its trademark description to carefully remove all references to games, as seen on that page.

It's hard already to come up with an original one syllable name for games.
Heroes of the Storm is silly, I hope this won't ended up like that.

Really? Huh. That's good I guess.
