Other info

Software sales were 87,3% compared to last year.
Hardware sales were 93,5% compared to last year.
Overall sales were 91,0% compared to last year.

The market declined another year.

Smash Wii U squeaking into the top ten. It was only on sale in Japan for like three weeks right?

Wii Party U's success continues to amaze. No wonder they are making new Amiibo and an Amiibo-only mode for the new Mario Party.

Man, Wii U had a couple games sell well but the hardware did horrible. 4th out of 6th, barely beating a console from 2006...

Wow at Smash Wii U squeaking at #10 despite selling for only about a month.

3DS still basically dominated the software charts. Just imagine if we remove the Wii U games in the top 10 the next 3 games are still from the 3DS lol.

I think it's hard to deny the hierarchy of god tier franchises in Japan right now:

Yokai Watch > Pokemon > Monster Hunter

Curious to see if Japan gets burnt out on Yokai Watch... they're going a little crazy with the frequent releases. If they can maintain this momentum for another year and continue to release two games a year, I think Pokemon will be officially officially dethroned. Crazy.

34. [WIU] Super Mario 3D World <ACT> (Nintendo) {2013.11.21} (¥5.985) - 192.193 / 602.234

Google told me Sunshine is at 789,989, so 3D World still has 188k units to go in order to not be the worst selling 3D Mario in Japan. I wonder if it can do it. A million sadly is out of question without bundling :(.

Never heard of Yokai Watch before. What is it?

Despite the poor hardware sales, it's good to see two Wii U games spoil the 3DS domination.

Youkai Watch is the biggest winner though. Level 5 having a huge year!

22. [3DS] Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth # <RPG> (Atlus) {2014.06.05} (¥7.538) - 254.631

Persona Q did extremely well; it's the fourth best-selling Persona game behind Persona, Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden. Also, accounting for digital sales, the game should be around 270.000 units.

26. [3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking The New World <SLG> (Marvelous AQL) {2014.02.27} (¥5.040) - 243.000

It's surprising to see how well Harvest Moon migrated on 3DS. The first one reached the 300k mark, this one is not very far and might sell well over time (also digitally) if Marvelous doesn't announce a new one soon.

37. [3DS] Fossil Fighters: Infinite Gear <RPG> (Nintendo) {2014.02.27} (¥4.800) - 182.562

This IP declined with respect to DS entries, but it still pulled good numbers. Nintendo should have pushed more towards the multi-media franchise aspect (it had a manga on CoroCoro).

39. [3DS] Battle For Money Sentouchuu: Densetsu no Shinobi no Survival Battle! <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2013.10.17} (¥4.980) - 170.276 / 365.194

A 365k game (almost) out of nowhere. I wonder whether Bamco will do another Battle for Money game; it should reach the 200k without problems.

49. [3DS] Dragon Quest X Online <RPG> (Square Enix) {2014.09.04} (¥4.104) - 141.845

This is surely one of the most surprising results of the year. I mean, this is a download code for a streaming app to play DQX on a small device at home... This shows how 3DS is a good fit for the IP, in my opinion.

50. [3DS] Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call # <ACT> (Square Enix) {2014.04.24} (¥6.264) - 140.105

Accounting for digital sales, this basically sold as well as the first one (which haven't received an eShop release yet). With DLC, SQEX should be happy about this result.

71. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy: Big Bang / Supernova <RPG> (Level 5) {2013.12.05} (¥5.500) - 107.340 / 277.207

Though declining a lot with respect to DS entries, and a bit with respect to 3DS entries, the IP might still be able to pull 250k+ numbers... which are not that bad given the state of the market.

79. [3DS] Puyo Puyo Tetris <PZL> (Sega) {2014.02.06} (¥5.229) - 100.116

3DS is the only platform where this game could barely succeed.

89. [3DS] Style Savvy: Trendsetters - Tokimeki Up! <ETC> (Nintendo) {2014.04.17} (¥4.936) - 92.513

Not bad for an expansion that was released completely off the radar. Along with the vanilla version, the game sold well above 400k units.

100. [3DS] World Soccer Winning Eleven 2014: Samurai Blue Challenge <SPT> (Konami) {2014.05.22} (¥5.119) - 81.853

Not bad for the second WE on 3DS. Konami should at least keep a 3DS version for Japan, hoping it might sell something in Europe (Fifa is selling well in Germany on 3DS, for example).

Overall, 3DS showed how big its market is.

6 millions sales for Yokai Watch... WITHOUT counting digital sales. Daaaaaamn.

They´ll be fools not to bring it soon enough.

14. [PS4] Knack # <ACT> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2014.02.22} (¥5.145) - 400.115

Go Knack!

16. [PS3] Dark Souls II <RPG> (From Software) {2014.03.13} (¥7.800) - 339.592

I know there are certain factors to take into account, but Knack beating DS2 is interesting.

Expected, but kinda depressing to see the declines for Nintendo franchises with respect to Wii and 3DS. DKCR went from almost a million to maybe 150k, Yoshi from 900k on DS to 300k, Mario Party from 2 million to 500k and so on.

Smash Wii U squeaking into the top ten. It was only on sale in Japan for like three weeks right?

Wii Party U's success continues to amaze. No wonder they are making new Amiibo and an Amiibo-only mode for the new Mario Party.

Bundles, probably would have only sold around 100k without them.

For fun here's the highest selling SKUs for each platform:

3DS
01. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.07.10} (¥4.937) - 3.050.178

Wii U
07. [WIU] Mario Kart 8 # <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} (¥6.156) - 842.053

PS4
14. [PS4] Knack # <ACT> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2014.02.22} (¥5.145) - 400.115

PS3
15. [PS3] Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme Vs. Full Boost # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.01.30} (¥7.980) - 372.827

PSV
17. [PSV] Freedom Wars <ACT> (Sony Computer Entertainment) {2014.06.26} (¥6.264) - 287.012

Yuji Horii made a comment about how there's roughly 500K core gamers in Japan. I think it might have been an overestimation looking at highest selling games on the Sony platforms.

Google told me Sunshine is at 789,989, so 3D World still has 188k units to go in order to not be the worst selling 3D Mario in Japan. I wonder if it can do it. A million sadly is out of question without bundling :(.
Downloads might closen the gap a bit though. Still a million is out of reach.

Glad to see Freedom Wars somewhere on there. It's been hugely overlooked in the grand scheme of things, considering it's quality.

I think this also has to do with the general decline in genre popularity, there was a huge 2d platformer-craze last gen, just compare NSMB2 to NSMB (NSMBU and NSMBW doesn't make much sense due to hardware sales). So serious decline for DKC and Yoshi was expected.

lol where the hell are they gonna release the next Dragon Quest.... 3DS? A handheld again? I mean.... because none of those other options look even REMOTELY welcoming.

Sure, DQ can probably move some units anywhere but..... they don't seem to enjoy putting it on any hardware that is struggling.

I don't see the problem putting it on 3DS again.

Your logic makes zero sense. You expect these core gamers to buy every game. Games appeal to different audiences and fanbases.

Crazy.

To be fair, the Yokai Watch games that outsold the Pokémon games were out for months longer and didn't outsell by much...

Yokai Watch is doing very well though. I'm surprised at the adoption rate for their enhanced version, especially as a patch adds most of it to the original one

Not every game, no. But not all of those games sales will be from core gamers either and none of those games sales are even close to the amount of estimated core gamers.

Level 5 swimming in money.

What I was interested in:
21. [PS3] Yakuza: Ishin! <ADV> (Sega) {2014.02.22} (¥8.600) - 255.471
57. [PS4] Yakuza: Ishin! <ADV> (Sega) {2014.02.22} (¥8.600) - 129.307

We didn't get Kenzan and we sure as hell won't get this. :(

I'm glad Y5 is getting localized, at least.

To be fair, a third version released a few months after the first two (YW2: Shin Uchi) is going to outsell Pokémon ORAS, which have 3 weeks more of sales.

01./01. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 2: Shin Uchi <RPG> (Level 5) {2014.12.13} (¥4.968) - 50.244 / 2.372.371 (-33%)
02./02. [3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2014.11.21} (¥4.937) - 24.964 / 2.457.623 (-35%)

True.

But when I think about it, I don't see a real issue there. I mean, Yoshi's New Island selling 300k is good given how cheap the game is; and Mario Party selling 500k+ in less than one year is again good, given how legs the IP typically has. Of course, DS and Wii era was something else. On the other hand, you have Animal Crossing towards 5 millions and a 3D Mario platform crossing the 2m mark.

They should just localize the PS4 version and sell it for 40$/30€ on PSN.
EU+US would get ~300k at least, double of the japanese numbers
