Code Name S.T.E.A.M. to get a demo on the Nintendo eShop (via DL code)

This was posted by Grylvak in another thread, but it definitely needs its own thread.

Looks like Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is getting a demo version in the near future. Apparently, some GameStop stores have started distributing some special cards, with a download code on it. Obviously, said code is for the demo version of the game, which hasn't been announced yet (which explains why redeeming the code doesn't work for now).

Here's some pics of the cards:

Trying to redeem the code:

The fact that you get this error is proof that the code is legit, but Nintendo simply haven't activated the downloads yet.

Nice! Already have it pre-ordered, but I'd like to see exactly how this game works. Still a bit confused even with all the vids.

Haven't been paying much attention to this game, but I'd definitely check out how it plays, the developer has done good in the past.

I am mixed on the artstyle, I tend to like the old comic book style shading with hard shadows. I don't really like how Henry looks, but then again Abe looks pretty boss in that card.

Those codes are for employees so I don't think they will be handing the cards out. I only saw 5 so they aren't for customers. I wouldn't be surprised if Ninendo emails some out though.

So hyped about this. Aside from Splatoon (and perhaps No Man's Sky), S.T.E.A.M. may just be the title I'm most looking forward to this year :D

Hmmm... interesting!

I still think there'll be download cards for regulars users, along with the usual email distribution.

It's always possible! The ones I saw came with a letter and won't be usable until the 26th.

Nintendo loves their limited demo releases. I guess it builds up hype or something.
it's what they always do and i'm getting real tired of it. it's simple but effective, restaurants do it all the time. we limit our nights to 55 people even though we could do more but still making the restaurant look full, so we get 'fully booked' easily and people would want to come more.

i.e nintendo is a restaurant and we're all waiting for that delicious dish.

Oh, I believe there's PAX South taking place this week-end? I guess they'll start distributing those there. I mean, that timing is definitely not a coincidence...

This is one of those games I will definitely want to try before buying. Hopefully the demo will be widely available. Then again, it's Nintendo.

Definitely need a demo to try this out, after all it was the Awakening Demo that sold me on FE:A. Hopefully this does the same.

I do not know about the game and I do not care much about this code.

If I can get it easily I will give this game a try. If it is hard to get I will not try to find it and will not buy the game.

This game does not look promising enough for many people. If Intsys want to sell it they have to let everyone access the demo to let people know if this game is going to be good or not.

That's nice, I have a lot of confidence in Intelligent Systems, but a demo would help confirm how well the game would play for me

Seems like a stupid idea, this isn't an established IP like Pokemon or Smash so locking the demo for an unknown game doesn't seem too reasonable, not that many people will go out of their way to get a demo code for this one I think.

I'll give it a shot if I can get my hands on it. I trust in Intelligent System, they have one hell of a release history, but Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is pretty ugly, I hate the artstyle.

Definitely hope they release a widespread demo and not just through emails or however you manage to get the voucher. I would love to play a demo of this game because while I love the developers behind it I haven't been sold on buying it just yet.

Nice! I hope EBGames gets this. I would love to try the demo even though I already am getting the game for sure. It would be cruel if the person that took the image were to actually hand out that particular card lol.

I don't need a demo. A Nintendo developed X-COM style game is so bought already that it's kinda disturbing. I still wanna play early tho...

Violent? I don't see where this is violent.

I just don't generally play games with guns. I'm not saying it's violent like COD or something. Just more gun-blam-y than I usually play.

To give you a baseline for my preferences, I find Metroid games more violent than I care for, but I find Kid Icarus charming and not too bad, although it's the most violent game I'd tend to play.

If I'm mistaken I'll be glad to check it out.

So are these gonna be early-access codes like the pokemon and monster hunter demos, or a bizarre and nonsensical way to distribute exclusive content like pokemon's codes?

It's rated T for "Blood, Fantasy Violence, & Mild Suggestive Themes". That might give you an idea until the ESRB releases their rating summary explaining why they gave it the descriptions they did.

Edit: Ah, seems they already did.

This is a role-playing game in which players battle aliens in an alternate version of Victorian England. Players command groups of characters through turn-based skirmishes and use steam-powered weapons (e.g., rifles, hammers, grenade launchers) to kill alien creatures. Combat is highlighted by explosions, cries of pain, and brief bursts of red blood. Some levels allow players to shoot from turrets or tanks in more frenetic combat. Female figures are occasionally depicted in revealing outfits (e.g., low-cut tops); one figure is depicted on a “victory” screen each time the player wins a skirmish.

In any case, hoping to get the demo. I feel like I should like this considering it seems similar to Valkyria Chronicles, but this really can benefit from a demo and then eventually word of mouth.

Why does Nintendo hate letting the entire public have access to demos? Do they not want people to try their games?

Okay, I guess I'm just numb on that base level :D

To note something as "violent" for me, I have to see a lot more gruesome stuff/detail.

You should check out the Treehouse live demo/last week's Gamexplain mission playthrough to see how the violence comes across in practice.

It's called patience. Everyone will get their turn.
