Apex 2015 has been evacuated due to struct damage - Some events may be cancelled

Even if the hotel didn't collapse during the tournament, it might've still saved lives later on, since it doesn't sound like the management really cared if they straight up lied about it

I'm sure there's open event space someone moderately close by. The problem is probably figuring out how to get everyone there and the money to secure the venue on such short notice.

There isn't, that's the other problem. The hotel is on the other side of the Hudson river from New York and on the far end of Jersey City (it's in Secaucus). Other very local venues are booked and anything else requires far too much travel and also likely booked or outside of APEX's budget. It's a mess.

Is there a conversation going on somewhere? I'd like to help with this if it's a money issue. You can't have thousands of people travel for a Nintendo-sponsored event and just have it end like this. If something can be done, let's do it.

As said, Prog is trying to work stuff out, and I think https://twitter.com/CEOJebailey is trying to coordinate stuff too. It sounds like they might be getting it under control, though, somehow.

If anyone was going to manage to make due in this sort of situation, it would be the Smash community. Unless or until they announce the event is canceled,

If they weren't able to get the setups (even if not all of them) that would totally grind things to a halt.

So much this. As a former member of that community for almost a decade people really seem to miscalculate the passion Smash players have for their game. The event will happen, it will just be a pitiful husk of its previous potential.

The parking garage already spontaneously collapsed a week ago. Seems possible that more of the structure could follow soon after.

Exactly. When one part of a structure collapses, it puts strain on the other parts in new ways that they weren't designed for. It also puts extra load on surrounding structural members and increases their chance to fail.

They might have been fine to do things around there, but the extra chance that the surrounding structure could fail at any moment is a risk that shouldn't be taken. Hopefully they can figure something out, but Clarion will be some deep trouble in this one.

As for everyone who flew out there and won't get to be in the tournament, you can bet there will be a class action suit to recover their costs.

Nifty AND saffron-colored!
MLG seemed to be offering their own venue nearby as an alternative, which would be incredible and make for a great storyline. Although an already tight event would be cut down to two days rather than three. I have not followed the conversation too closely in the past hour though.

They can even seek costs including the fees required for a venue change (if they find one); etc. Pretty crazy a franchise like this would strait up cover up rooms with ceilings caved in.....

People saying "they would know if they did a walk through before hand"; They would not show you the rooms with caved in ceilings. If you asked to see the room they would tell you it was occupied by someone else.

Pretty much if someone wants to deceive you, they will; Sucks for APEX.

We're moving to the Garden State Convention Center. This event is still happening. Big thanks @Twitch for this. Tell everyone you know!!!
I've been there- it definitely has enough room, it's just a giant cavernous place.

"Git to da choppah!" the organizers cried as the APEX building sunk into a mile-deep crater.

As the helicopter flew into the sunset, the gamers blinked back tears as they watched the booth for F-Zero WiiU sink into the earth.

"We don't have backup code," said Iwata, who was wearing a sideways baseball cap and was attending the convention for some reason. "Guess we'll have to cancel."

prog seems to be talking with a bunch of different people. https://twitter.com/progducto

Thanks! Looks like Twitch stepped in and saved the day. Nice!

Exactly, it's a money issue. That's what I wanted to help with, but it looks like Twitch handled it. Much respect to them.

So is twitch at the Garden Center setting up or do they need access to the equipment trapped in the ballrooms to setup?

Wow, got a new location already. Was not expecting a turnaround that fast. Apparently Twitch helped?

Honestly, given everything about this situation, the hotel is going to be hit really hard by this. Multiple staff have been arrested reportedly, and there's definitely going to be legal action against them

I hope they are hit hard. If they really lied about it being safe, that's evil shit.

Awesome for Twitch. Though holy shit, that's not exactly a local venue change, that's ~40 miles away.

Don't expect any Smash today, since getting everything moved and re-set-up is going to take ages. I wonder how they're going to handle transportation? Seriously, that is not a short trip down i-95 if everyone remains at the Secaucus hotels (and assuming the fire marshall doesn't order the Clarion closed and evacuated in full) and they have thousands of people to move.

If there is an open venue, between Twitch and Nintendo, they should really foot the bill to make it happen. It would be an incredible signal of good faith and would generate a TON of positive PR, something NoA needs lately

But it would be complicated.

Not to mention the obvious benefit that APEX would continue.

God Bless @Twitch is even gonna work on buses to transfer players to the new venue. This could be absolutely incredible w/ everyone's help.

Whoa!

If they pull this off they should include talk of the strength and devotion of this community towards Smash Bros and spin like crazy when they do the community tribute video folks said Nintendo had planned for this event. To keep this thing afloat and running...it'd be the biggest comeback in tourney history IMO. I've never seen so many things go wrong.

There is another Smash documentary in the works. You can bet this will be a hell of a highlight if things go through.

I am quite serious when I say that Nintendo needs to do something in this debacle to put themselves in a good light.

They REALLY need the good PR with the community. But it looks like Twitch will gain all the positives.

Twitch is a much smaller entity than Nintendo -- it'll probably take a while before Nintendo has money to throw around to help relative to Twitch. EDIT: Not to mention Twitch is a business around gaming communities

Man, it seems like Team Spooky, Twitch, all these organizers are different camps but I will be damned if they don't pull together when shit goes down. Any more rants on how established TO's are A-holes seems to go right down the toilet, they are clearly working hard and if you think this is happening at no cost you are nuts. Even if Twitch/ Big N foot the bill, someone had to volunteer to get the ball rolling no doubt. Good on everyone holy shit.

Yep, definitely looks that way. Nintendo is really blowing an opportunity here, they could have been heroes.

There's really no way that they could have pulled that off given the timeline involved... maybe if it was in Seattle and not NYC. Reggie probably would have to approve spending the money needed (one of the Treehouse people said it was a pain for them to even get Splatoon there). He probably literally got in the office in the last 90 minutes given the time zone differences.

They do have the Nintendo World Store but there's not enough space there and it'd be a pain unloading everything in the middle of Manhattan.

That would probably be asking for too much of them...not that they're obligated to considering how unexpected this whole incident was ofcourse.

Time for Plan Bplex!
shamelessly stolen joke from reddit.

I was really hoping Nintendo would let them use Nintendo world and that would be the next level of the Nintendo and smash community relationship.

As noted, there's really no way to get it through a large corporate structure in this timeframe. Maybe if Reggie himself was on the ground, but even then he might need to talk with NCL about that kind of expenditure; I'm not sure exactly how financially intertwined the various continental branches of Nintendo are.

Twitch, meanwhile, is a still relatively-flexible video service which had everything to gain from making sure the event happened. It was a no-brainer for them no matter what their corporate structure is.

Is Nintendo World even big enough to hose an event of that size? I know they've been able to host their own tournament there in the past, but that was just for one game.
