Sonic Runners Teaser Trailer

Whatever Sonic Team has been working on is going to be sick. It just better have a chao garden.

How about, a PS4/XB1/Wii U/PC game with two characters. Sonic's levels are Modern Generations / Daytime Unleashed levels but with the option of exploration. Knuckles levels are the same map, only more open than Sonics, he runs a bit slower and his levels are focused on treasure hunting. 2 player co op but P2 has to be Tails. Sonic & Knuckles 2 with 3DS/Vita/Mobile Chao Garden.

I'll just show myself out. :(

Don't they already have a Sonic endless runner? I guess this one is supposed to be different because it's 2D?

I'm still banking that this isn't just an endless runner though. They're hyping it up too much for it to be just that.

They just need to make it different enough to trick the handful of people who like sonic into thinking that this one will be good.

Sonic Dash and the Sonic Jumping game have been pretty damn fun for free mobile games.

The trailer was pretty hype, I just hope its as fun as the previous two.

As far as we know, this is the one.

Well, the series ends on a rather middling note then. Last mainline entry was Lost World, which is widely considered to be average and a let-down after the powerhouse one-two punch of Colors and Generations.

If nothing else I'm glad the series ended now before it got worse, if Sonic Boom RoL was any indication.

Now people can hopefully hand-pick the good Sonic games to play for themselves instead of having to suffer through the bad.

Cross posting from Sonic Retro.

The trailer's cool in a "let's build hype using Sonic's retro legacy" kind of way but zero gameplay footage is underwhelming and a little disappointing. Even twenty seconds of one stage would have sufficed. Looks like the game's inspired by the classics and is 2D at least. Segabits have more information here and here and Sonic Stadium has more here. Both sites are getting their information from that Japanese interview between Famitsu and Iizuka. Quick summary from both sites:

*The game is a 2D action side-scroller
*The game's out at the end of February in Japan
*Colour powers and companions are mentioned which I'm presuming means Wisp powers
*Sonic is playable from the start; Tails and Knuckles are playable but have to be unlocked
*The game has one or two minute stages; is playable with one hand and has multi-branching paths
*Characters run forward automatically and player input determines jumping strength
*New music will be composed for the game regardless of Flying Battery in that trailer
*Eggman shows up as the end of level boss; the interview notes Sonic recoiling projectiles at him
*50 stages available at first; future stages added through potential DLC

The game is not an endless runner and will have self-contained though also rather short stages. Sounds like your standard low-budget mobile title to me. This can't be Sonic Team's big game for this year. Sounds too limited in scale. Kind of still excited for this but I need to see gameplay footage. Echoing everyone else here on the sentiment that we need to see more before we get excited. Also if the game's out this month we'll have gameplay footage very soon if not runthroughs of the entire game itself.

Sonic Team's (not colors storybook LW team) last Sonic game was Generations, a cheap sequel of Unleashed HD. Do you really think that after 4 years, this is thier ONLY project?

they need to do more cheap sequels if generations was the result, the best sonic game for some time

I actually enjoyed Sonic Dash more than any Sonic game since Generations.

Dash is legit good, it can run like ass sometimes and has really really really annoying ads but is fun. I used to had almost every character unlock and lost all my files when I changed phones. I enjoyed unlocking the characters through the worldwide special events, specially andronic.

Well, I was right. It's technically not an endless runner, but I was expecting there to be more to it than this. Like, minute-long stages are a good idea because it's a mobile game but I was hoping you'd have more control over Sonic. Also I'm expecting the level designs to just be straight paths with gaps you have to jump over and the occasional loop.

....So its Rayman Jungle Run but with a Sonic skin? Sign me up then :). What you described sounds a lot like how the iOS Rayman games play (you tap the screen to jump and press a button on the screen to punch) and the fact it is going to expand on that somewhat with Sonic style extra paths (I'm thinking....each level will have a high, medium and low path, with each path offering you something different (different level exits to access new levels, red metals, color powers).

I'm just wondering how color powers are going to work with the game.....as considering this is iOS.....they would have to be gyro and touch based :l. I mean, stuff like the Drill Wisp and Laser Wisp aren't that hard to make working with a touch screen (the former will by you dragging your finger to move it while the latter is a simple button press that you touch after you aim with the touch screen/gryo controls), but the other ones are a bit trick to make work with that control scheme. Wasn't that a huge issue people had with Lost World too?

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing more of this :). A Sonic Team made iOS game.....that sounds exciting to see considering how they are making the game ground up for the platform instead of just porting a game to it (imagine Sonic Unleashed on the iPhone? I have no idea how that would control X().

hey, sounds like it could be fun. the small-burst gameplay doesn't sound bad in theory.

it's actually more what the series needs to be. the huge-budget games with crazy amounts of effort put into the presentation are huge mistakes.

Not exactly the game I was hoping for, but eh. It looks to be 2D, and not just another Temple Run knock-off. I'd much rather have an actual, console release like a Generations 2 or something (Even another Lost World), but so long as this is a side thing and isn't Sonic Team's next "big project," I'm okay with it. I'll probably enjoy it for a week, at least.

Wait, what is this thing circled, and where did you find this image?

Sounds alright. Nothing that will make Sonic amazing but I'm sure it will be an enjoyable game.

Honestly its hard to mess up after Sonic Boom.

It's a Dark Gaia enemy and I found it at the SonicStadium forum. The watermark shows it's from Famitsu.

So it's the Rayman mobile games, but with lots of recycled Sonic assets. (And some new assets designed to look like old assets.) Boy howdy.

I see that Mama Wisp thing that was only in the DS version of Colors, and one of the easiest and most unnecessary final/extra boss fights in a long time. Kind of wish that had stayed dead.

Sonic Jump was awesome when it had defined levels to beat. Then they ruined it by re-tooling it as an "endless" score attack game.

Why do people like "endless" games? Don't you want a sense of progression?

At least this is side scrolling.

EDIT: With contained levels? A little interested now. Hopefully it comes to Vita.

Im still really salty that this is a smart phone game. Serious question though, are they doing this to get Sonic's name back out there?

This game has been in the works for a while. We found out about the name the same day the Boom games came out. So it's not reactionary; it's been planned regardless of what happened with the Boom games.

For a second I got hope for a follow-up on Sonic Advance or Sonic Rush when I saw that picture, another dream quickly crushed.

Got no interest in a mobile Sonic runner, I doubt Sonic can bring anything interesting to this already overdone genre. I'll just hope that it will be good just because I think Sonic deserves a good game again.

I didnt mean it like that, what im asking is does sega think sonic's popularity is dropping? not from sonic boom but in general. (Seeing as they are going for a Smartphone game, and not a console.)

Sounds like a fun little diversion.

If it can fund getting the rights to Michael Jackson's Sonic 3 music for the iOS release I'm all for it!

At this point I feel like sega has a bag full of ideas (most bad) and what every gets pulled out is what they go with. We got lucky with colors, generations and all star racing, hopefully this turns out well.
