LOL! I think they just chose the wrong game to do a dark, grim anime. Should've been Devil Survivor 1.

In Tsutaya? Probably? But we don't know the final rankings, so it might still be in.

I dunno though here. I feel that SMT4 would be better choice here.

But the most important if u ask me here, stop being not relevant to the gameeee. Show progression of the character, make it longer.(More than 12 eps), show development of demon rather than demon is just a simple tool. Make the M.C grow stronger not simply because he is chosen but also because he is growing.

Of course also, the battle scene must be more than Lucifer hugging Satan.T~T

Boy, so many thing wrong with that anime. That I can only rant everytime I remember that anime here.

Can't really talk about the writing and stuff, but if they went with 12 episodes, it's because they couldn't do otherwise. Anime is pretty costly to make, which is why so many series only last 1 cour instead of 2 (even if there's enough material for 2).

I doubt there was many channels/sponsors ready for a 24 episodes anime of a rather niche series like DS. Persona got a 2 cour series (+ the Golden one) because it was more popular, and Atlus had way bigger ambitions for the Persona franchise as a whole. And it paid off in the end.

Of course, having only 12 episodes hurt the anime series itself, but I doubt it'll have a negative impact of the franchise itself (the long delay, on the other hand...). I mena, plenty of games/series have a crap anime, yet still performs well. May have a negative impact on the growth of the series, but honestly, the delay probably hurt it waaaaaay more than the anime.

Curious about 2 things this week: week 2 for LoL and DS2. Expecting 50k max for DS2.

LoL probably collapsed; I'm expecting <10k units (which will be enough to make it the best-selling FuRyu game, btw).

As for Devil Survivor, my feeling is that Atlus has DS3DS in the pipeline; a 50k opening for Break Record would be a good signal that the audience is there. After all, it's not a million seller, and 100-120k units might be good enough for the IP to be kept alive.

12-episode season is fine. The problem with DS2 anime is it became "out of character" when compared to the game, which is a more light-hearted one with a good number of funny scenes and characters. It would've been better if they patterned the anime to the best ending of DS2. The dark and edgy one is DS1, with a lot of serious characters and a more grim atmosphere.

Did Nintendo underestimate Rosalina's popularity? Seems like it's been out of stock worldwide a lot more quickly than Marth or Little Mac, who probably had lower stocks (less popular series and characters).

IIRC when they first came out, the two that were sold out in Japan were Samus and Zelda.

I suspect they undershipped the female figures in general.

It's not an uncommon assumption to make that boys won't buy figurines of girls.

Disney actually was quite surprised when they found out young boys seemed to have no aversion to using them: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=885584

That said I also suspect the average age of people buying Amiibos is likely way higher than Nintendo would have guessed as well, but we haven't had the financial call yet to find out.

Good point, didn't think about that.
At least in the west, Samus and Zelda seemed fine after the first weeks, but that's also probably because their series are more popular in the west.

Would be nice if we got a lot more details or similar questions in the Investors Q&A indeed.

This blog posts first day sell-through numbers.

There's a 5,000yen discount for those who pre-order or purchase it between now and March 1, making it cheaper than PS4, and it comes with a game.

Two things:

1) Minecraft PSV finally getting a retail release in Japan, in March. Don't have a link though, saw it this morning on Twitter. A bit too late, I'm afraid.

2) Denpa Ningen no RPG Free! now at 1.8m downloads. Rate of downloads seems to be slowing down (not surprising), but it's still going well.

Yeah, that's really late. Still, better than nothing? I can see it having fairly long legs at least. Possibly the closest to an "evergreen" title the Vita's ever gonna get.

1:10 seems a great attach ratio. This F2P game might also provide advertisement to the other entries.

With the upcoming lineup for the PS4 in japan Microsoft is gonna have a very hard time convincing japanese to buy the XB1. even with this new bundle

Another Vita game that could sell (not so much because it is late) being released in march?

Tsutaya's Report

- As it was expected, Devil Survivor 2 is the most sold game of the week.
- Far Cry 4 for PS4 sold better than expected and some shops faced stock problems. With enough stock the game could have topped the ranking.
- BladeStorm sold well too.
- PS4 started to increase due to anticipation for Dragon Quest Heroes at the end of February.
- Tsutaya expects PS4 hardware to increase from now until the awaited launch.

No word from Tsutaya, but I saw the game sold out in Bic Camera and Yodabashi last week. So not fully available that week.
The problem is how the word of mouth is going to affect sales after is available again.

I thought the WoM for the game is quite divisive in Jp right now? Where the game is not bad at all but more of how some Bravely fans feel that the game does not play like BD but more like Saga.

Cant wait for the next MC.

DQ Heroes looks amazing and fun too which could be interesting if it gets popular and word of mouth keeps it selling for awhile.

I really hope they keep the engine and use it on DQ XI

Anyone think PS4 will move up into the 6 digit range in March a week with DQ Heroes, Bloodborne, Type 0 on the market?

Divisive between those that like boring RPG's with no storyline and those that don't.

Edit. I don't have time to read if it's been posted elsewhere but Langrisser 3DS in tomorrow's Famitsu (source Gamestalk with those naughty scans).

Yes. Langrisser is out in Summer.

I don't have data about the series sales. Growlanser, which was the spiritual continuation, never sold more than 100k as far as I know. The game is super-niche, but it might crave FE fanbase.

Between now and late March, the PS4 is getting a steady flow of bigger titles (some multiplatform, some not) and I am looking forward to following the weekly sales. I really want at least one home console to do well in Japan this gen.

Famitsu data:

Langrisser III (SS) - 179,719
Langrisser IV (SS) - 84,035
Langrisser V (SS) - 59,511

Growlanser (PS1) - 56,574
Growlanser II (PS2) - 81,666
Growlanser III (PS2) - 74,814 (Probably sold more than this, but it came out in Dec, and sold less than 33k in the following year so the data is missing)
Growlanser IV (PS2) - 107,134
Growlanser IV Fandisc (PS2) - 19,885
Growlanser V (PS2) - 69,711
Growlanser VI (PS2) - 58,451

Edit: And for completion's sake...

Devil Survivor (DS) - 106,997
Devil Survivor 2 (DS) - 99,748

Famitsu data:

Langrisser III (SS) - 179,719
Langrisser IV (SS) - 84,035
Langrisser V (SS) - 59,511

Here you go. So both series were niche but with a somehow constant fanbase.

Yeah, Langrisser sounds like a disaster in the making.
No Satoshi Urushihara, Devil Survivor Record Breaker now, and then Fire Emblem if when it comes out.

There'll be like no audience for this.

It's really the timing. Games like Langrisser and Stella Glow should have come out last year in between FE releases. Awakening fans will just wait for If now.

Capcom Earnings: http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e150203b.html

Capcom Co., Ltd. (Capcom) today announced that net sales decreased to 47,830 million yen (down 36.4% from the same term last year) in the 9 months of fiscal year ending March 31, 2015. As for profits, operating income increased to 9,727 million yen (up 14.1 % from the same term last year), and ordinary income increased to 10,114 million yen (up 9.3% from the same term last year). Net income for the current period increased to 6,540 million yen (up 9.8 % from the same term last year).

a. In the Digital Contents business, sales of the special feature title "Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate" (for New Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS) were largely in line with the plan and sales of "Ultra Street Fighter IV" (for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC) targeting overseas markets were also solid, reflecting its strong popularity. In addition to the satisfactory sales of "Dead Rising 3" (for Xbox One and PC), which was a million seller in the previous fiscal year, an online game "Monster Hunter Mezeporuta Kaitakuki" made a robust start. Furthermore, a steady increase in the sales volume of download sales contributed to profits due to their high profitability.

b. On the other hand, sales of a major title "Gaist Crusher God" (for Nintendo 3DS) remained sluggish. Moreover, there were no big hits among Capcom's mobile phone contents with certain exceptions including "Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS", although the overhaul of the profit structure contributed to profitability improvement.

Shipments (in thousands):

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: 2,700
Dead Rising 3: +200 / 1,700
Resident Evil 6: + 100 / 6,100
Devil May Cry 4: +100 / 3,000

Puzzle & Dragons Company Earnings: http://www.gungho.co.jp/ir/uploads/irk20150203_1.pdf
Fiscal Year 2014

Overall Sales: 173 billion yen (+6.1% yoy)

Sales by product:
- Puzzle & Dragons: 158 billion yen
- The rest: 15 billion yen

(I wonder if the Yokai Watch Company had a higher ratio last year.)

Sales by client:
- From Google: 85 billion yen
- From Apple: 79.5 billion yen
- Everyone else: 8.5 billion yen

Total Puzzle & Dragons franchise sales (2012, 2013, 2014): 321.5 billion yen.

Please note that is only the money that GungHo booked, after Google, Apple, Nintendo, merchandise retailers etc. have taken their cut.

Devil Survivor 2 (DS) - 99,748

And

Devil Survivor: Over Clock (3DS) - 40,226
(Top 500 Media Create 2011, might have sold an additional few thousands copies afterwards)

Break Record seems like to had a much bigger budget than Over Clock though (additional cinematics, cross promotionnal effort even though it didn't went with the release of the game...), so selling more than the latter seems logic.
I don't know which numbers it would take for Sega to see it as a success though (>100k LTD ?), but there's still room for growth for a third episode I guess.
