Game Informer March Cover: Rise of the Tomb Raider

The combat was pretty much perfect except for how bad the enemy AI was. Thats all they really need to focus on.

I hope the reference to TLOU is in regards to enemy reactions because she shouldn't feel heavy like Joel but light and agile.

So hyped right now!!!

:p

Hell yeah! This game sounds better and better with every detail!! I remember not really getting into Tomb Raider (2013) at first. Then, I ended up playing DE last year and loved every minute of it. [hype intensifies]

Just read the article in Game Informer. My hype level is definitely rising. All the new stuff sounds so good, so hopefully CD can deliver.

Since it's not confirmed and there has been no indication of it coming to PS4, I don't see how it's not port begging. People can be make all the assumptions they want about it coming to other systems, but for all we know, it could come to just PC. Like, yk, Ryse and Dead Rising. The same thing happened with those.
It's coming.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I think this is definitely the case as she isn't large like Joel and it fits her character better.

I just want to be able to play TR2 with bow only like I did the first.

Red jacket covered in snow, or white jacket covered in blood?
Are people really asking?

Going to wait for the PS4 version even though I have an X1. But I'll keep an eye on it as more info comes out. Very interested in this. I actually enjoyed the first one quite a bit, flaws in the writing aside.

Loved the first game, but the existance of x360 version puts a damper on my excitement. They should drop it, Dying Light style. Gonna wait for PC version in any case though.

No reason to drop. CD is letting Nixxes fend for themselves.

If this turns out to be true, then I hope Phil Spencer can get his money back considering he wanted to buy a "Uncharted-like" game.

That's ridiculous. The games will obviously be compared because they are third person shooters with platforming and puzzles (easy ones) as well as both of them having an Indiana Jones influence. It sounds like the gameplay will different overall, though. Uncharted has been linear with a focus on arena shooting segments like Gears of Wars. Uncharted 4 seems to be going in this direction with more freedom and size in the individual shootouts (the level at PSEx looked really cool). Tomb Raider took the Metroidvania format and plans to double down on that with the sequel.

How do people see it as being covered in blood? Why aren't her hands, pants or face covered as well then? Look Lara is a fashionable girl she obviously wanted a jacket that looked good with her new ice picks.

I got grudge sucked!
I have a 360 so I might bite on that. I heard they were basing the sequel on the TR13 engine anyway, so it might be decent.

Like a lot of PS4 only owners, I wasn't happy about the announcement, even if its just timed, but I actually think its a good idea, especially if the new Uncharted is coming out this year too. It makes sense for SE to put the game where it won't be competing for the same audience. On XB1, it gets its own shine.

I'm hyped for this game, but I don't think I can wait until the GOTY version comes out on the PS4 & PC.

I'll just buy a cheap 360 just for this game

Most last gen versions of cross gen games are missing lots of features or bells and whistles comparative to the next gen version. That's not really the issue. The question is whether the next gen version of RotTR will be made on an engine built from the ground up for, and only for the next gen systems, and the game designed as such, or whether it is simply an updated version of the previous engine. I mean, you can see the differences in approach in something like the engine Ubisoft used for Unity, comparative to the one they used for Black Flags. Likewise with FH2 on the Xbox One (which is based off the F5 engine) compared to FH2 on the 360 (which is based on the F4 engine). But I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Those are some fair points and I guess we'll see, but I won't be surprised if it turns out to exactly like the Horizon 2 where they use an old engine for the 360 version and a new engine for the X1.

Anything less would be incredibly stupid this late into current gen. Not even Squeenix is that insane...

Actually, it looks pretty nice already. It doesn't need to be the top of the pile to look good.

I think it looks great, but everyone has their own expectations. I suspect it's true impressiveness will shine through in footage.

That is terrifying for the simple fact that bish has a blonde wig on...

Do yourself a favor and just get a refurbished XB1 or something, it will be worth it rather than playing the gimped version.

Say what you will about the story and characters in the first game. (I know I do) but Jonah was the legit best thing about the narrative. Glad he's back!

At least wait for a discount and give the devs some money for their work instead of Gamestop.

I'm all for supporting devs, have done it many times in the past and will continue to do so.

I'm not a fan of the whole timed-exclusive BS going on with this game.

I'm looking forward to this. I enjoyed the first one, even if it was more combat oriented than previous games in the franchise. If they could strike a better balance between fighting and tomb raiding (which they're trying to do from the sounds of it) this could be really good.

There's a difference between port begging and commenting on the fact you'll be waiting for it to come to another platform, which it's practically guaranteed to do.

The talk of dev-formerly-known-as-SOE titles coming to Xbox One was shouted down as port begging lol...and they actually talked about bringing games to the platform.

More stuff from the article.

- At least two different locations across the globe.
- Jonah is back from the first game
- Environment itself as the main antagonist.
- Cloth and herb to heal wounds.
- More than one of each weapon type.
- Variety of bows with different attributes.
- Weather system that animals and human enemies react to.
- Not sure if they confirmed a day night cycle or not, they mentioned "animals reacting to" time of day.
- Hub areas are two to three times bigger than previous game.
- Lara can climb trees, hide in bushes, swim.
- Pushing for pre planning aspect to engaging in combat, though sneaking past everyone isnt the goal.
- Tools for distracting enemies and luring them where you want them.
- You can lose the enemies after engaging them.
- Game informer says combat reminds them of the Last of Us.
- CD talks about doing more with tombs and puzzles this time around.

GOTY material right there

This game sounds really good. Never was bothered by the "dissonance" of mass-murderer Lara. Reminded me of Nathan Drake whining. I'm down for round 2.

They wrote "the goal will rarely be for lara to sneak past...", so I don't know, I agree with you though. Hopefully they don't force you into combat 100% of the time.

I don't remember being able to stealth past every encounter in the last of us though. There were a few where you were forced to engage.

What I meant was that in the Last of Us I could kill all the enemies in an encounter using stealth. In 2013 TR and Evil Within enemies just come after you from the start in some situations; stealth isn't the default start of the encounter. And there are a few encounters where it's almost impossible to maintain stealth even if you can begin in stealth. In the Last of Us virtually every encounter could be finished without triggering a firefight, and what's more I could escape and get back into stealth mode, whereas once an enemy sees you in TR it's all over.

So basically what I'm saying is, at minimum, I want to be able to play Rise as a stealth game even if it requires me killing a bunch of enemies stealthily, and ideally I could choose to skip killing if I wanted.

Maybe I want too much Human Revolution, here. I'll enjoy the game either way but since by far my favorite parts of 2013 TR were stealth headshots with the bow I'd like a whole game of it this time. :p

Looks awesome. The "original" was really well done and quite enjoyable.

There must be some gifs on this page because my reply typing ability is so stilted.
