Splatoon: new info from Famitsu magazine (Hero Mode, multiplayer and more)

How can it have local multiplayer and no bots if the fight only starts with 8 players ???

4 players on tv and 4 on the gamepad ? =P

We don't know what the mode will be for local MP. It could very well be 2 vs 2 or 4 vs 1. 4 vs 4 is practically impossible on 1 common screen + 1 individual screen.

It's in the OP. People are just unable to read full sentences because reasons

For some that might be the case. For others, just like Crocodile, they are making the assumption that there won't be party chat. I'm holding out hope, but if I was to bet on it I'd bet there's no voice chat with parties. Or if there is, I bet you won't also be able to match with randoms so either it's private lobbies with voice chat or no chat at all. I'm basing this guess on Nintendo's history. I'm holding out hope tho!

No online chat?
FUCK YOU Nintendo, it's 2015.

Oh hey, it's another drive-by opinion that cannot even be bothered to read beyond two words. Fun. And with words like that it comes to absolutely no surprise why online chat isn't going to be freely admitted.

I tried to point out that, but people have obviously grand strategies for those 3 minutes of ink splashing.

Funny how Nintendo's "White knights" defend every retrograde game-decision this company takes. You can always give the choice and turn it off if you don't want it but hey, why should they, right?

Well, hope it's available between friends... that part is still on the blue.

No voice chat in a team shooter? Classic Nintendo. I'll lurk GAF Splatoon threads for a month after release and then decide if this is worth the $60 they'll ask for.

So because the matches are 3-5 minutes long that makes communication irrelevant? What a terrible argument; there's no defending this decision in 2015. Why can't I tell my teammates to flank or try switching weapons? Why do I have to look down at the pad to see where people are at instead of having them just tell me via voice? The mental gymnastics people go through to defend decisions like this or no charger in the n3ds box are incredible.

Once again, No voice chat "with players you are matched with". Can you read the quotes? Because it implies that voice options will be in the game. Just not in random matches. But what do I know, apparently I'm just a bloody white knight incapable of thinking for myself.

I'm not going to repeat what I already wrote previously in this thread, it's not only about time, it's also about the scope and the gameplay type. I played it at Gamescom without voice chat. That didn't stop me for winning and getting the best score. I hope with all my heart there will be a voice chat for friends so you will have where to complain about getting your ass kicked.

Edit: When you meet an enemy you don't have time to wait for your teammates to flank, because during this time the other team will paint you out of the win. You kill one, they paint 3 times more than you. As opposed to the regular shooter every second means points.

Edit2: I don't say that some coordination during the game wouldn't be useful and I hope there will be voice chat for friends. But given the game type, my opinion is that the team split of responsibilities (and the weapons chosen) before the game have a much bigger impact than during it. The individual skills of the players are much more important imo. So not worthy of the big drama reactions.

What about to just chatting with other people? It doesnt have to be used for some deep strategy talk.

That a match last for only for a few minutes doesnt mean that much by the way. The same thing applies for many shooters, like Call of Duty and Counter Strike. Those rounds are also just lasting some minutes. I would also assume that people arent planing on only playing one round in Splatoon and calling it quits. Or are people here argumenting that there is basically no coordination strategy to be had in Splatoon?

Definitely not liking the sound of a few of those things...

At least the single player modes will be there. And if local multiplayer is in I'll still grab it.

If I'm playing an online game I don't care for small talk unless it is an MMO or a game with a hub. I want the team focused on the game. It's partially why I agree voice chat sucks. I know how obnoxious I can get because I'm competitive focused. Some of my friends are even worse in chat.

Then there are the people who like to pretend they play for fun but play the trashtalking game to make you miserable.

Then there are the idiots.

Let's not forget the days you get paired up with people with a different language.

I like socializing in an MMO because there is significant and mandatory downtime. THe gameplay itself is usually structured such that you can pace yourself.

Shooters, rts and most sports games have a tempo that is too fast that makes casual conversation casual. It is more stressful than helpful.

Nintendo has no reason to risk cultivating that social environment and ruining their brand.

At the same time I see how much voice chat is such a big deal in improving your game so being to opt in is important.

If EAD is adamant about voice chat not being an official feature I hope they consider a compromise with voice commands. You can talk but only certain words will be registered to get across necessary information.

Exactly this. I played it in the press Area of Gamescom and the Open Area severel Times. There is no need to. Maps are small. Within seconds, your mates and enemies changed their position. You have to ink the ground, not to shoot the Enemies. And with the feature of instantly blasting off to your allys, there is no need of communication If you see where ink is missing or covered from the enimies, just run to that spot and do your job.

Higher-level competitive play is still going to be better with voice chat.

Put some TF2 veterans in a mumble chat and they'll destroy a random team of good individual players who aren't coordinating in this game.

If this is like other Nintendo games I fully expect there to be some voice chat with friends. Or between matches with friends. Like other recent games.

Having played Call of Duty and Battlefield for a number of years I can comfortably say you don't NEED voice chat to play as a team. It can help but it is not even remotely an absolute must. I question anyone that tries to say you must have it to work as a team. What is required is for one to pay attention to their surroundings and the placement of themselves and their team mates and enemies on the map. Additionaly in this case what color each area is. That's all you need to work decently as a team. Many play this way. I would think the vast majority don't use voice chat.

Remember the goal is not to kill each other but control territory. How you move in the game might not even leave time to formulate a plan other then deciding who might try to control want area of the map. We've see the gameplay. How would voice chat help that frantic type of gameplay we're one second you are going up a wall then swimming in one direction jumping in and out of ink. Everyone doing the same thing.

I'm glad they're seems to be local multiplayer. Wonder what the playe count Will be. 8 players on one system? 4 local against each other or against another 4 online. Lan support for possible tournaments?

Yeah, people have different opinions about what they prefer. Personally, i usually mute random people that talk. I'm just arguing for the positive things that voice chat can bring. Like you say, having it optional is the best solution.

They already tried that, but they didnt think it would work.

"-Tried implementing a system whereby you could give orders to your team mates, but battles were too quick and hectic for them to be effective so they got rid of the feature."

I could see coordinating being of great use so that not two or more players are running to the same area trying to cover it. You also have to focus on the enemies of course. Otherwise they will kill you, and then you lose time to spread ink. If you get killed in the game, giving a heads up to your team mates where the enemy is can also be benifital.

The lack of voice chat is a bit disappointing, but being a Battlefield & Call of Duty player for years, I know it's not necessary at all. I've used voice chat in BF4 maybe a handful of times, but mostly no one uses it. It is fun with friends, though. So, I guess, in that area it'll be missed.

The lack of bots and waiting for a full match means nothing to me. Battlefield and Call of Duty are pretty similar. They have larger lobbies, but the game won't start until a certain number of a players have joined. In Call of Duty, you're mostly staring at the lobby screen while you wait, but in Battlefield you're allowed to run around the map with the other players until the actual game starts. I'm hoping it's more like the latter, where there's something to do while you wait. Neither of the games have bots for multiplayer, either. That seems pretty antiquated, now that I think about it. The only recent game I can recall having a CPU player in online multiplayer would be Mario Kart 8, and that's only if a player drops mid-match.

While I personally don't care much for voice chat.
The last trailer did say you could communicate with the inkling on the plaza.
Still. Hope someone can translate and clear up if it has voice chat with friends or not.

The plaza was just for Miiverse posts I think. From the sound of it they might just randomly take posts from Miiverse and have their inklings hang out in the plaza.

Voice chat is such a easy thing to implement that it makes no sense not to include it for people that want it.

For people defending lack of online chat, simply include an option to mute players either globally or at will like every other game.

There are no excuses. Just a really stupid decision.

Gotta prevent the pedos from taking advantage of the system*

*Nintendo logic

Considering the SwapNote situation, they're not entirely in the wrong.

Bummed out with No Voice Chat, but not a deal breaker for me. Understandable for those who feel it is, tho. They really should include SOME sort of voice chat. In TF2 I barely use it (on PC), but some times when people are telling stories or making jokes it adds a lot to the fun.

A 3D Platformer included in the game sounds way more interesting than all the cons for me, imo.

I'm assuming they tried a UI that relies on button presses and tablet swipes. If they made the UI hands free that would resolve the problems of meshing communication in fast paced game.

It was more a problem of the stuff going on in the game changing too quickly than with players being too busy to input commands. Here's my translation of that line:

"We originally considered a method to give orders to teammates, but because the battle situation will change wildly within seconds, this was abandoned."

I haven't been entirely following the development of this game, but there's seriously only one online mode (what's been shown off, and it's only 4v4)? That's a huge disappointment and kills any lingering interest I had in the game.

Honestly, after thinking about it, no voice chats with randoms is no big deal. You already have a full map to track the action, and you're knowledge of the other people you're playing with is limited (At most you'll probably be able to pull up their gear and weapons before a match), and most people are probably not going to listen to the advice of a random guy issuing commands in this sort of game, and getting them to understand why you want them to do something will take too much time. That said, I think there is an advantage to voice chat with friends. Knowing the situation and knowing the best way to react to a situation are two very different things. And there will always be times when certain players will be too caught up in what they're doing to constantly check the map. If you're with a team of players you know, having somebody act as a leader or strategist who allocates roles and tasks based on the situation can be very useful. Different weapons and gear might lend themselves to different situations. Being able to coordinate who should go where and do what can be very useful, because not all players can handle all roles equally. Someone using the roller as their main weapon will probably be great at covering territory, but not as good at dealing with enemies, so you might want to assign someone with a gun to help cover them if enemies approach them to stop their advance.

Does anyone really want to engage in voice chat with randoms? Legit asking, since I've experienced nothing but grief doing so. People cursing, screaming, blasting loud music. People speaking their native language, completely disregarding that the community is global.

Nintendo just needs to implement voice chat between friends, like they've previously done, and it's all good in my book.

I'm fine with this. Heard enough in PS3 titles to always mute everyone everywhere. I think there was literally a single time, where I actually wanted to talk to an actual friend in Uncharted 2. And I'm pretty sure that our talk went onto the nerves of another (random) coop player.

EXACTLY. Due to the PS3's lack of a system-wide mute option, I actually bought a USB sound card, set it as my voice chat device, and plugged nothing into it.

Or they could choose to not just cater to babies like every other hardware manufacturer.

Really?

I don't care about voice chat or bots so there's no bad news here. We knew about the single player mode before; it's great to have something to do outside of battles. The squid transformation opens up possibilities similar to Samus' spider ball except that you get to paint the track. I imagine it'll be a fun single player campaign.

It's not meant to be. I sincerely don't know how can people "defend" something like this, where it's clearly detrimental for the players/costumers, and they are obviously able to implement it.

The game looks amazing still, but hey, criticism where it's due.

It's frustrating to see people say they're glad optional features are not included in a game, like voice chat with randoms. If you don't care to use it, how does including it impact you? One day when Nintendo does come around to these features the same people will sing their praises though, because what wrong could Nintendo possibly do?

I hope that worldwide matchmaking isn't too literal. At some point I would take a bit of a skill mismatch to keep the lag at a manageable level.

why don't you, oh I don't know, tone down your shit slinging insults? in many instances posters are just explaining where Nintendo is coming from rather than outright defending them. as someone who has been referred to as a "Nintendrone" in the past 24 hours (due in large part to a lack of reading comprehension) it's just disrespectful and it derails threads (like we're doing right now). whenever you're in a thread and you have a notion that "hey, I think I'll make a post insulting an entire fanbase," perhaps you should rethink whether or not to go through with that notion. just some friendly advice.

I don't think there's a weapon switch option mid-game.

Yeah, as far as I'm understanding from all the info we have until now you will go into a battle with one set of weapons that you chose previously.

Check this out! Squid fighters can take a set of three weapons into battle: a main weapon, a sub weapon, and a special weapon. Turf wars are considered a serious sport in the squid world, and as such, the weapon manufacturers are constantly competing to outdo one another with new innovations to help these athletes gain the upper hand…er, tentacle.

No voice chat with players you're matched with, or not, it still sucks. I don't necessarily blame Splatoon for this kind of thing, I blame the Wii U, the console, or, how Nintendo has treated the console.

The Wii U is capable of having voice chat, private voice chat parties, voice chat with people you're matched with, voice chat party invites, not just talking in the lobby, not just through the Wii U gamepad, but an actual separate mic, ala 360/PS3/PS4/XB1. Why Nintendo chooses to neglect this feature is beyond me. My interest in Splatoon is slowly dwindling.

The fun potential in games like MK8 and Smash are lowered when the voice chat capabilities are so rudimentary.

I see no problem with the 8 players rule, game is going to sell enough units and the target audience knows that this game has a big emphasis on online matches, I don't think you're going to wait.

If there really is going to be a problem they'll patch this.

Biggest + for me is that they wan't to implement local multiplayer, pleeeeeease.

Do you really think it's going to sell well? It's a Wii U game without Mario or Zelda: Nintendo would need to market it heavily.

Not going to sell as well as Mario/Zelda/Mario Kart/Smash in its first installment but I'll bet on it doing over a million WW lifetime.
