The games are independent of each other, turn based combat with live movement through dungeons to usually determine combat advantage.

Oddly enough with the older Persona (and some SMT games) the characters had slots for both melee weapons and a gun. Looks like they're bringing that back.

Yeah, the MC has an "assassin knife" in the first slot and a "hand gun" in the second.

They have a stand alone story so you don't need to play the others. At most, there will probably be a cameo or two.
