Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game | The Official Thread

Played a nice pre-super bowl game with my step son. He made a the mistake of allowing me to split his squadron and i was able to concentrate my fire. That and the dice were not on his side. My Rookie Pilot with R2-D2 was the MVP. We were playing on my homemade top.

Looks like it was a great match!

If possible, can we see the full builds on both sides? Always love seeing someone run the Tie Defender. :)

I think I have spent about £250 on this just sticking to Galactic Civil War stuff and avoiding most of the big ships, not too bad for a minature game. I have the 3'x3' mat the the OP has ordered, would certainly recommend it.

I've always wanted to play this, but we have this instead:

Now there is a game that gets expensive very fast.

I guess I never realized that we could talk about board games on gaming side. That's cool. Board games have certainly been more interesting than most video games coming out these days. So badly want to try this and the Star Trek one out.

Most of the boardgame/tabletop/miniatures/cardgame threads are on OT actually. Dunno why they're not on gaming side.

Batteries the CRISIS!
I own the starter set, and try to play now and then with my brother.

I wish there was a play by play walkthrough of a normal regular match, so that way I kn ow what I'm doing. I usually lose as the X-Wing and win as the TIEs.

I was looking into buying the Decimator soon, though, as its description and abilities appeal to me.

Some pointers for flying as the X-Wing against the TIE Fighters in the Core Set ...

Try to get into range 1 of the TIE Fighters so that you get an extra attack die (four dice total), which helps counter their three agility dice.

It's almost always a good idea to use your focus action (as opposed to using target lock) after moving. That way, you can spend your focus token to make your attack better, but if you don't roll any focuses, you can spend that focus token on defense.

Target locks only help you offensively, not defensively, so they're not quite as flexible as focuses. Best time to target lock is when an enemy ship isn't within your firing arc but it's close enough, within range 3, to target lock it. That way, when you eventually do have it in your firing arc on a later round, you can have both a target lock and a focus, making it very likely that you'll do damage. Remember that unspent target lock tokens don't go away at the end of a round like focus and evade tokens do.

Try to set up your X-Wing at the beginning of the game so that there is a patch of asteroids between you and where the opponent set up his TIE Fighters. Then try to lure him into the asteroid field (do some koigran turns back and forth for a couple turns, perhaps) so that he has to split up his fighters as they go around rocks and hopefully can't both shoot at you at the same time. Try to focus on one TIE Fighter until it's dead, don't switch between the two if you can help it.

To piggy back on this dont underestimate the importance of asteroid placement.

I got really into regular Star Wars Miniatures a few years ago. Spent well over $2000 and had about 70% of the full collection.

While it was a very fun game, I could not justify the cost or the temptation to complete the full collection so I sold them for about $1000 or so.

While X-Wing can definitely get expensive if you're really gung ho about having an extensive collection for both factions, it's luckily nowhere near as expensive as that, unless maybe you were insistent on playing 1,000 point games and providing all of the ships for everyone involved. xD

Also as a side-note, I went ahead and added movement/action bar reference sheets on the Rebel and Imperial ships in the OT (not the large ships though, since those use different kinds of movement templates and I couldn't find the sheets that matched the style I found for the others).

Yo I love playing this, few friends got me into it a couple of months ago and it's been great. Candor Jax forever.

My friends got me into this a few months back. I've only gotten a few games in, but I'm super looking forward to the Scum ships coming out. My friends all have fairly established Rebel and Imperial fleets, so I figured Scum was a good chance to jump into the game. I bought up a bunch of Z-95s, a couple HWKs, Y-Wings and a Firespray. Some of the missions seem seriously one-sided (in particular, the Bounty Hunter mission and the Rebel Transport seem really easy for the non-rebel fleet if the imperial focuses solely on the target). Either way the game is good fun, and certainly cheaper than my 40k and WHFB habits. With no painting to boot!

I am torn, between getting into the Star Trek verison of this or do the Star Wars. I really like the looks of these but I am more of a Star Trek fan, however I think there are more Star Wars players. So getting into the Star Trek not going to do any good if there no one to play.

The Star Wars game is run better by its company, Fantasy Flight. Wizkids runs Star Trek and it releases overpowered convention-exclusive figures as well as figures that are exclusively prize support for winning tournaments.

No figures or pilots are exclusive to being at an event or winning a tournament in the X-Wing game; the prize support consists of fun things like alternate art cards and acrylic tokens.

And you're right, there are more X-Wing players than Attack Wing players, generally, although that may vary from city to city.

Top notch OP. I've been eying this game for a while but then one of my buds organized four of us to get into Warmachine together and that sort of ate up all my financial / intellectual / emotional capacity for games like this. I've watched some people play at the store we play Warmachine though and it looks really good. Definitely a good entry war game.

You really just turned me off of Star Trek right there...which really makes me sad, I love Star Trek, but as an old Dragon Ball Z player I hated that stuff when Score use to do it.

The Star Trek version has more variety by nature of having way more factions and ships on screen. It also has more "scenarios" (mission cards included in each ship release) that are really fun to play. The tournament scene is going to be a wash, depending on how your local area is (player base wise), and whether you like playing for unique prizes or an alt art variant of something and whether you like playing a generic battle with six asteroids or some specific objective like a Battle at DS9. X-Wing has better quality minis, though the Star Trek ones are getting better, and is generally regarded as being more balanced.

That said they are both cool in their own way.

I love this game. I need to grab some more ships though.

Going to a local tournament for X-Wing this weekend, taking the classic Decimator/Phantom list. As long as I don't piss off my opponent too much I'll try to take some shot and report how I get on.

I don't own this game, but I have played it several times. It's really fun. It's also easy to pick up the basics, especially for a miniatures game.

Yeah, Wizkids ruins everything. They also reused the Star Trek minis they sculpted for their old Clix game, so they look kinda shitty, especially when you put them next to FFG's nice Star Wars minis. And it can be a bit jarring when you, like, have Captain Picard commanding a Klingon ship, which is allowed in the game.

I like Star Trek as a property, so this isn't a Trek vs. Wars thing. Attack Wing just has a lot of warts.

Oh cool they added Corran Horn to this thing? Buying that expansion now lol.

Yep. He's an E-Wing pilot with a really good ability (you can attack a second time in a round, during the End Phase after every other ship's already had a shot, but then you can't shoot at all next round). He's pretty popular in the metagame right now.

That's a hell of a start to your post. Anyways, yes the early sculpts reused the molds from the clix version of the game but the newer models do not (especially since you have ships that never released in that version). The recent ones are gorgeous, especially the Alpha Hirogen vessel.

As to off faction building that was the entire point of the game and it's entirely thematic. Ex: Riker as first officer and then Captain of a Bird of Prey or a Kazon crew commanding Voyager, or the DS9 crew on a captured Jem'Hadar attack ship. How is that any weirder than fielding a dead Biggs Darklighter against TIE Phantoms that didn't exist yet?

Its a matter of extremes that it is taken. Star Wars version still can work within limits of it being a game. The Trek version of the game kinda gives too much freedom and creates some silly scenarios, especially with there being no timeline restrictions.

The trek version of the game is fine, it has a slightly different feel as it tries to capture more naval ship feel while X-Wing is more about fighter craft following the original Wings of War system.

General component quality for the Wizkids games has been usually shoddy compared to how high quality X-Wing is. Not only Trek, but their new Dragon attack wing game also just has really weak cards, tokens, etc. Paint applications just can't compare to how good FFG has been doing.

The core games are identical though so it's basically up to you franchise preference or if you want what is preferred at your local venues for play.

I can't comment on first hand Star Trek Attack Wing experience, but from everything I've heard there is a much smaller community (at least in my area) compared to X-Wing, and as others have pointed out, WizKids just doesn't support the game nearly as well. Honestly I've been very impressed with Fantasy Flight's ability to add interesting and worthwhile expansions without them becoming completely mandatory purchases or swinging the meta to the point of it being pay to win.

Their approach to game balance adjustments while keeping things fresh seems pretty spot on from everything I've read. But if you're a die hard Trek fan and the game plays almost exactly like X-Wing, it's probably worth looking into if that franchise could make this type of game more enjoyable to you.

All I can say is X-Wing is incredibly fun and I can't recommend it enough.

I'd love to get into this eventually, but I only know one or two people who might play it with me. Two questions: are the games usually around an hour long? Or can they go for way longer? And does each person need to have their own minis, or can I get a small collection of each faction and just have my friends use those?

So glad we finally have a thread for this.

I have Store championships for this in a few weeks. I'm thinking of running a shuttle / interceptor / defender list. In the few games I've tested it with, as long as the shuttle isn't the last one alive, I have a good chance of winning.

At first, 100 point games between two beginners will likely take longer than an hour since you'll be going through the phases slower as you learn them, but generally once two players who know what they are doing play each other, matches tend to average around an hour long (I believe tournament rules actually limit the time to 60-75 minutes before declaring a winner based on remaining points).

As for how to go about getting a collection of ships, if your friends are willing to get their own Core Sets and set of ships for themselves, you guys could all coordinate and buy different ships in order to save money and share each others' whenever someone wants to try out a different build.

I personally didn't want to have to rely on my friends getting convinced to make any purchases in order to be able to play, so I got my own ships for both factions (but more on Rebels since that faction is my focus) and two core sets to be able to invite a friend over and play with them without them having to own their own set. It's not terribly expensive to start off with a collection large enough for some varied builds for both sides.

I think a good starting collection to aim for to be able to play around with some builds on both sides would be:

  • 2x Core Sets
  • 1x Rebel Aces Expansion
  • 1x Imperial Aces Expansion
2 Core Sets and both Aces expansions would give you:

Rebels:

  • 2x X-Wings
  • 1x A-Wing
  • 1x B-Wing
Imperials:

  • 4x TIE Fighters
  • 2x TIE Interceptors
This would be a great start, but for some additional variety it would probably also be good to get maybe 1 additional expansion for either or both factions of your choice. I went with the Phantom and didn't regret it; that thing is a surgeon in the right hands. For Rebels I'd recommend a B-Wing expansion to get a 2nd one, those things pack a punch. But really, you could get whichever ships sound interesting to you and you'd be fine, but I do think that an additional expansion of your choice on both sides would round out that starter fleet nicely.

Play time is usually a set amount of time and calculate points at that cut off. The scale of the battle and how familiar one is with the game will determine how quick it goes. As for a collection it's entirely possible to support multiple players yourself depending on the builds. Large TIE swarms would require some heavy investment but between two starter sets and a few expansions you could comfortably have some variety. Figure between 3 and 8 ships on average per player.

My starting path was.
Core Set $29.99
pack of dice $5.99
x wing $13.99
tie fighter $13.99
b wing $13.99
Tie Defender $13.99
(Ive bought everything from my FLGS. Ive made the decision to support the store with this game.)

My Initial investment was about $90 bucks. This was more than enough to get a 100 point game going.

my next planed purchase is Millennium Falcon, Slave One, Rebel Aces, Imperial Aces and Tie Advanced (For the Darth Vader)

I hope you've got an Engine Upgrade on that shuttle or it'll have a hell of a time moving around =P

As others have said, yeah, games are about an hour long. They can go way longer, but not often (usually because both players are deliberating hard on their movements, or both players are playing seven-ship swarms).

You definitely can get all the materials yourself for both people to play. If you only buy one Core Set, you and your friend can share maneuver templates, attack/evade dice and the range ruler. (But it's recommended that you buy two Core Sets because it's a cost-effective way to get a few more ships and to get extra dice — you'll often need more than three dice for an attack or a defense. A nice bonus to doing this is that you and your opponent will have your own maneuver templates and range rulers so you don't have to keep borrowing the same set.)

I prefer Trek to Star Wars, but I've stayed away from the Wizkids game for the reasons listed. I love Heroclix (a lot), but ST:Attack Wing looked like it would be borrowing some of the worst aspects of the Clix scene. Same thing with the D&D Attack Wing, which also adds ground troops. Looks cool as hell, but I don't want to invest in something that will bleed me dry or leave me behind.

As far as X-Wing, I never got into the local scene and have only played at home a little, but I really enjoyed it. I haven't kept up on recent releases at all though, I just have the first few waves of stuff.

I don't, but I have learned to play slow and steady with the shuttle. I will usually set up on a corner, and see where the main action is going to be, and should be able to be pointing in that general area for 3-4 turns, at least.

After that, there is some issue with turning around and such, but by that point the hope is that the other two ships will be able to play clean up.

The specific list is:

omicron group pilot
-gunner
-weapons engineer
-fire control systems
-shuttle title

soontir fel
-push the limit

I like X-Wing quite a lot. I've talked about it a little bit in the Board Game thread, which is where it gets discussed (and possibly why OP only saw one mention of it in the miniatures gaming thread).
I currently own:
-2x Core Sets
-1x A-Wing
-1x E-Wing
-1x HWK-290
-5x TIE-INT (2 Imp Aces and one vanilla Interceptor)
-1x TIE Advanced
-6x TIE Fighter (4 from the core sets and two vanillas)
-1x TIE Phantom
-3x X-Wing (2 from the core sets and one vanilla)
-1x Y-Wing
-4x Z-95

I haven't bought anything since the summer and haven't played a match in a good while. When the Millennium Falcons went out of stock everywhere, I said I would hold off on accumulating more ships until the reprint. And I kind of stopped playing because I was waiting to be able to build the squad I wanted to fly. Then the Firespray went OOS everywhere. And somehow in between the end of summer and now the majority of other ships have gone OOS. I swore off buying more until I could get a Falcon in like August and here we are in February and I still can't get one for a decent price? FFG has really dropped the ball on the line lately. I already knew a good majority of the ships were OOS most sites but when I was on the FFG site recently to check out some Dust Tactics items and saw just how many ships are unavailable, I ended up bursting into laughter. A game that has been only growing bigger and bigger in popularity, sees big tournament play, has a movie in the series coming out that is getting fanboys hyped for SW merch... and people can't buy any of it.
Supposedly people have been able to buy Millennium Falcons from Barnes and Nobel recently so maybe the ships finally made it to the country. Still a ways off from me being able to get one in my hands and even then I won't be able to get the Firesprays or B-Wings that I want.

So anyway... Yeah, I love the game. But FFG is making it hard for me to maintain interest in it.
I've got a Coffin Box and Revised Core set of Dust Tactics on the way, Warmachine to learn, and a Space Wolf army for 40K that is being gifted to me, as well as Imperial Assault that arrived somewhat recently. So I am set on the minis front AND the Star Wars front at the moment. Hopefully FFG will allow me to give them more money for X-Wing products sometime in the near future though.

I’m just getting into the game myself and one thing I’m planning to do is check out playing online via Vassal – a lot of top players like Paul Heaver play this way. It may seem a bit alien playing a miniatures game online in this way, but from everything I’ve heard, it’s a great way of playing with a greater range of players – also, you’re able to download log files of games, which people say is a great way of picking up tips.

UncleO mentioned the Team Covenant website as being a really good resource - completely second that. A few other resources I’ve found helpful are:

FFG’s website – some really good articles by champs like Heaver and Doug Kinney. Also, the X-Wing forums are great.

afewmaneuvers.com – lots of good forum discussion, info on playing on Vassal and for getting documentation.

The Metal Bikini – a blog about the game, which I think was the first one – or one of the earliest; I find the guy entertaining to read.

Also, the following podcasts:

Scum & Villainy
Nova Squadron Radio
The Kessel Run

For real though, try looking into these sites first if you were concerned about price:

Both of these sites have DRAMATICALLY reduced prices if you're buying in bulk. It might even be advantageous to buy some from each site based on availability to save on some cash.

If you're having trouble finding a specific item as well, you can try Barns and Nobles. You don't really get much of a discount there, but they get YT-1300 and Firesprays in pretty often.

Barnes and Noble's website pretty much has everything in stock. It's not as cheap as Miniature Market, but if you sign up to become one of those free B&N members you get free 3 day shipping which makes up for it. It can take a day or two to process the order to get shipped, though, so I'd expect the orders to arrive in about 5 business days.

I would seriously recommend dropping the Dice Pack and getting a second Core Set instead for reasons provided in previous posts in the thread. The value for the extra 3 ships is very good, and you'll be getting an extra set of dice, damage deck (each player needs their own damage deck and a Core Set only comes with 1), templates, range ruler, etc.

HWK290 and Lambda are support ships that are a little more difficult to fly but have some fun and interesting build options when used with various Crew upgrade cards (Darth Vader on a Shuttle is a very scary and effective combo and is lovingly called the "Doom Shuttle"). The Lambda in particular is especially useful for Imperial builds since its in-game cost for the no-name pilot is the cheapest "large" ship in the game.

Can't go wrong with the Rebel and Imperial Ace Expansions. They add various game changing upgrades and pilots, and the ships are great additions to any collection.

It may be hard to find specific ships in retail shops like B&N but if you're lucky they might be well stocked. In either case, B&N's website seems pretty much fully stocked, which is where I ended up getting some of the ships I was having a hard time finding, like the Falcon and Slave I. Then again, the last time I happened to check out my local B&N they had just stocked up and had like 3 Slave I's and a bunch of other stuff, so YMMV.

I personally feel like you'll get more bang for your buck if you drop the dice pack and the lambda (it's a great ship, but you'll want to be a bit more comfortable with the game mechanics before you can properly use it), and instead pick up another Core set and maybe a few assorted TIEs

I gave the core set to my sons (well, and myself) for Christmas, and I've yet to open it and read the rules.

Thus, here's my dumb question:

Do you need 2 core sets to just play 1 game? Or does the core set allow a 1v1?

1 Core set allows for one of the training 1v1 matches I believe, but a normal 100 squad point game requires 2 damage card decks (but then again you'll need more than the Core Set ships to fill out a 100 point squad anyway), and typically there may be more than 3 attack and defense dice to be rolled at one time (If an X-Wing is in range 1 of an enemy ship, you add +1 dice on top of it's 3 attack die for example).

You also technically are supposed to have 1 damage card deck per player, so that the odds to draw really bad critical hits are not effected by another player drawing from the same pool of cards.

Drop dat Shuttle,Hawk, and Dice Pack, then add a core set. That will give you a healthy amount of ships to start with.

If you had some cash left over and were looking for a large base ship, the decimator is pretty easy to locate ATM if you were considering leaning towards Imperial. Otherwise you can't go wrong with a Rebel YT-1300 or YT-2400. Both those options have very critical upgrade cards to many builds and are both fantastic ships.

Oh, if you can find a YT-1300, strongly recommend you buy it. They are rare and are hard to find right now.

Thanks guys.

Wow Barnes & Noble is no joke.

For the same price in my Amazon bag, I'm instead getting 2 core sets, tie advanced, rebel aces, slave 1, the falcon, and a Y Wing. Holy crap so much better.

You guys rock.

Yeah make sure you check the retail prices on these ships before ordering on Amazon or on some other sites, since if certain ships are slightly rarer sometimes they will gouge the prices up.

Glad you were able to get more for cheaper. :)

Any good Canadian retailers for these?

Amazon.ca's prices are all over the place.

Gameshack.ca has decent prices, but some of the stuff isn't in stock. I also don't know how reliable they are.

I'll be looking locally, too (Montreal), any pointers would be appreciated. :)
