Is that Mad Max game still happening?

Once we hear more about the movie the game should come out very close to the say day. I think the movie got delayed for whatever reason and now the game is getting more time for polish.

The film's pre-production began in 2001. The game began development in 2009.

Back in 2003 when Fury Road was supposed to be filmed for a 2004 release George Miller envisioned rebooting the Mad Max franchise by not only having a new feature film but expanding on the film and universe with an anime and video games. Of course with production of the film ever being delayed and not actually commencing filming until 2012 the anime plans were scrapped but the video game was kept.

Team members from Avalanche actually visited the set when they were filming in Namibia in 2012 to record and photograph all the vehicles in the movie for the game.

Pre-production and development hell aren't what I was referring to as production, though I'm aware of those processes having gone on for a long time before the movie actually entered production. The game went into development before the film went into production. Upon searching, Avalanche has been quoted as explaining that while there was at one point a plan to make the game and movie very closely tied, the game since became standalone and is not a tie-in to this film.

One reason cited being that they think tie-ins are terrible: http://www.shacknews.com/article/80824/mad-max-not-a-movie-tie-in-says-avalanche-game

It's the Mad Max universe, but not a Fury Road based game, which is what the examples I posted before did too. I'd assume their set visit was part of when it was more tied to Fury Road or they want it to resemble the new film in some ways to encompass the universe despite it being standalone in the canon.

Absolutely crazy how long they've been working on this.

Is mad max really a big enough franchise to carry a big budget game like this? Sure, if the game is great it can sell regardless, but at some point the movie license almost becomes more of a hindrance.

Ahh I get what you're saying now. No it's not a Fury Road game in that it's the same Max and plot from the film but the universe George Miller reimagined for the movie and game go hand in hand like the game is an extension of the movie. The Interceptor, cars, gangs, factions, weapons, technology, locations etc featured or mentioned in Fury Road appear in the game.

Tom Hardy never actually used an Australian accent for Max in the movie because by his own accounts he couldn't do it and sounded terrible and so Avalanche didn't have Max as Australian neither. Of course more people got wind of the game and Max's accent in it from E3 that there was a bit of an outcry so Avalanche changed it and as a result Miller, and Hardy in ADR, tweaked Max's accent to be more Australian as evident in the two trailers.

I honestly also wouldn't put much stock in Avalanche's words as for whatever reason they're trying to take more credit or not give credit where credit is due ever since Barlog left in 2011-2012. Take this interview with Avalanche for example..
GC: Is there anything specific from the first three movies in the game, Barter Town perhaps?

AG: No, we tried to create our own word – because as soon as you start using elements of other movies you’re giving it set pieces in the world and then you have to develop your game around that. Whereas if we start with a clean slate, which we did, and we create our own world, we can create our own features.

Like one of our key areas is Gas Town, for example, which I suppose is similar to Barter Town in that it is a large area where humans bound together – and there’s machinery involved and all that. So Gas Town is one of our core large areas.

Gas Town huh...Here's concept art for Gas Town and the gang/war tribe from Fury Road:

You also see Gas Town in the very first shot from the new trailer.

Long story short - Game uses the same world as Fury Road to create an original story and playground to play in. lol

It's kinda like what Rocksteady did with Batman Arkham games or Monolith with Shadow of Mordor or Starbreeze with Riddick in that they made a videogame set in that same world but did their own stuff with it so it didn't have to be deadlined near the movie's release date. Hope it turns out well.

Just received word from WB that release for Mad Max will be in September 2015.

On a side note: MKX for PS3/X360 has been delayed till June.

They are just waiting for the movie to do all the marketing and by the looks of it, the movie is going to be just as good as the originals.

Well, they did just reveal Just Cause 3, so I think they're focusing on building hype for that game. My guess is Mad Max is after JC3, so 2016 sometime. Probably beginning of the year.
