Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate: Review Thread

There are 3DS accessories designed just for that, you can claw on a 3DS if you really want to.
Ooh, you mean the MH4G extended slide pad aren't you? The only thing that makes me feel justified for not preordering n3DSXL MH4U bundle. I don't get the fancier graphic and loading time, but in return I have better ergonomics and more awesome camera control.

You claw loyalists blow my mind

Dual analog is the superior setup as proven to me by Vita and WiiU

Im more than happy with the new cstick

better control sure, but better ergonomics is really reaching there... there's a reason why the claw repelled many players in PSP era

Hmmm, since I am picking up my New 3DS XL on Friday, I may finally have to give this series a go.
I see there is a demo so I will no doubt try that first, but just a quick question.
Is it turn based combat?
I have never been a big fan of combat where you choose your moves, wait for them to be executed, then wait your turn, rinse and repeat. Just has never been my thing. I need "real time" combat FYI I admittedly am not a big RPG player at all, so I do not know if I am using the correct terminology.

I did also just put the whole game on my GameFly queue, but since it comes out on Friday I may have done so too late. We shall see.

Wasn't terribly excited. I played some of MH3U on the Wii U but never really got into it.
These scores, though, along with mention that it's a great way for new players to get into the series has me tempted now...
Oh shit, this or Majora?

I'm in the same boat, but I think I may try this one out!

No it's more like a boxing game with weapons and big giant monsters instead of humans as opponents.

Yup, I personally use the standard CPP (I move the camera with my right hand) but I'm happy to see accessories designed just for the claw lovers, I don't play like that but I see why they like it.

I'm kinda like you, I decided to keep the old 3DS just because of the CPPs, they saved me from the expensive upgrade. ^^

Well she said 3DS accessory that gives you feel of the claw, not the claw itself as I don't think there is any accesory that should be able to replicate the experience wholly without turning the 3DS into Monster. With that in mind, there is only accesory that do the job and that Hori's MH4G Extended Slide pad (sorry for the lack of link, on phone here). That accessory not only act as CPP, but grip as well when you see its design.

Freaking "I don't care" sites posting before embargo lifts because yes.

"Game demands many hours of playtime. If you're planning to play around 20 hours and progress quickly, not only you won't enjoy it: you'll end up abhorring it. Monster Hunter is best played with some good patience and dedicated time. I've played 70 hours so far and only scratched the concepts needed for this review."

If it's only standard CPP, upgrading is no brainer to me (though it will hurt since March is packed up month for me). It's the ability to experience camera control that really convince me to bought the extended slide pad. Saving $200 is nice though :p

uhh so the game is not avaible to buy or preorder from amazon germany. I'll buy it from a retail store anyway (no time to wait for the mail delivery lol), but there shouldn't be a supply shortage, right?

edit: in fact, even the all of the n3DS models aren't avaible to buy, only majoras mask (the game, not the special edition of the console). uhh ohh.

The screen size never been a factor to me. I'm one of the minority who want regular n3DS for better portability. The only n3DSXL that I want is the MH4U bundle, but it got sold out when I'm trying to make up my mind.

I wonder since Nintendo is heavily advertising this as one of their big games for n3ds launch if we'll get a midnight eshop release
pls

Even the shitty Peach-"Zierblende" is "Derzeit nicht verfügbar !" . The thirst is real.

I don't think you'll have to worry about retail supply, the only 3DS game that was kinda hard to get in it's first month was Smash 3DS .

I actually like the sound of that. I am a big fan of the art of pugilism both irl and also have enjoyed some of the video games released, so if I approach it like that, it really may make me enjoy it more. Thanks for the response, you pretty much just convinced me to seriously check it out.

That GameSpot review is terribly written.

For those who don't know, the Monster Hunter games are action-RPGs, where you do battle against dozens of giant monsters, take their body parts, and use them to fashion new weapons and armour with which to do battle against more giant monsters--except it is much more complicated than it sounds, which is why it’s such a brilliant series is so brilliant, and also why so many people struggle with it.

I don't know how this got past an editor...

That was really a good way to describe it. Monster Hunter is the Sweet Science of combat-based video games. Float like a butterfly....... then sting the bastard.

How fucked am I sans-CC Pro/New 3DS? I may buy the CC Pro XL, but I'm not sure how deeply this game will hook me yet. I've never played anything in this series before.

My MH4 3DS has been shipped.

the game or the system?

since I checked yesterday and just saw majora's being advertised to have a midnight release on the eShop with MH4U being right there too, but with nothing about the release, I think that will not be the case

I would hold my breath for that, because NoA

its totally fine, you can use the camera control on the touch screen d.pad, which is fully customizable too, that control is actually a lot better than it sounds or seems

You are not fucked at all. Use the L button to use the lock-on, and you'll be golden.

Yeah, that thing looks like it has good ergonomy and you have your right hand free from camera duties. I'm happy with the standard CPP but I'd love to give the Hori one a try, maybe I'll buy that too someday.

I'm a bald dude btw. :p

You'll be fine. Monster targetting makes second analogue camera controls obsolete for the most part.

Definitely give it a try someday! I'm not really the best player, but I guess the right hand being free from camera control should opened up possibility of awesome battle manouver.

I think I mistake you for other gaf member lol

You won't be disappointed.

Freedom Wars is a joke compared to mainline Monster Hunter games. The gameplay mechanics are so, so much better.

Try to press the icon of the monster on the lower screen, a crosshair will appear....and then, whenever you press the L button, the camera will move in the right direction (towards the monster) It works really well.

Yeah I'm starting to see that, my main thought about Freedom Wars after I started playing it was, "Man, this would be better with more monster variety, longer battles with more combat styles, and less people on the screen"......welp guess it existed all along.

Did any of the review sites mention a difference when playing on the 3DS or new 3DS consoles?

In passing

There's been some noise about Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate being released alongside the New 3DS, because it features sharper textures, faster loading times and, of course, proper camera control with the C-stick on the new handheld. But if you're on a crusty old regular 3DS and don't feel like upgrading, I wouldn't worry--the game looks, runs, and plays well without any of these benefits.

Others talk about the c-stick and better camera control, though.

Both game are very different though, in size and gameplay. But it's nice if FW managed to get you the right paradigm of approaching MH (and hopefully other game in the genre).

I gave this a try with MH3U on the 3DS, I will try that again with the New 3DS to see if the camera is better with the C-Stick, if I fall in love with the controls, I might have to get this one...

I tried the Cstick in a Gamestop recently (they have New 3DS demos now) and it works damn good

Count me surprised and happy

I have never been a big fan of combat where you choose your moves, wait for them to be executed, then wait your turn, rinse and repeat. Just has never been my thing. I need "real time" combat FYI I admittedly am not a big RPG player at all, so I do not know if I am using the correct terminology.
Combat is real time. The concept of choosing your moves, and waiting for them to be executed means that some animations take a while to play out, but everything is all real time. As an example, fighting a fast monster, if you always start a Great Sword swing where the monster is right now, you'll likely miss more often than connect due to its speed. You have to plan ahead, and plan your attacks so it hits moving monsters, depending on the attack, monster, and more.

Definitely check out that demo! There are several faster weapon classes, plus slower ones, but they all have certain animations that play out. Certain weapons lets you roll cancel out of them, but that's dependent on the weapon. Experiment!

The silver LE console with the game installed. GAME UK. Has a expected delivery of tomorrow by DPD.

I'm SO SO jealous, mine should not arrive until friday at the earliest :(

and even then I'll have to wait for it to come to my country

Will be buying, I liked MH3 but the lack of online play killed it for me.

MH3? may be you are talking about MH3U, and even then it had online on Wii U..

aaaand even then, this has online, so all is good :D

God the hype is building so hard. I can't help it, I just can't stop and resist it. I want it now, I just want it. I need it, I now. Uuuggghhh

Ive been trying to play it cool but starting this morning, when I saw the 72 hours remain picture...... my hype level has grown to uncontrollable levels. I'm playing the MH 4 demo at work to compensate. haha.
