The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

So, since I don't have a PS4 and had nothing better to do, I just finished watching the walkthrough of this game on YouTube. I'm cautious about saying anything about what I think of the plot here though, so I'll just keep my mouth shut.

What an odd way to spend your day.

did a bunch of posts just get deleted?

Yeah, my lack of impulse-control prompted me to respond to something that immediately disappeared. Somebody cleaned house quickly.

Please don't, if you feel like discussing it there is a spoiler thread

Nope, and that's why they didn't do co-op they didn't want it to dictate the narrative they were telling.

And that's what I was expecting. Given what Rapier has mentioned thus far and how the devs have portrayed the game to be, it would run counter to the game's (story) progression design to have co-op with said teammates.

At which point did I support the claim that the majority of the game is cutscenes point that out please. I was just providing stats on roughly the amount of cutscene time.

Sorry, I thought you were the one with the previous post being quoted. I see now that it was someone else.

Yup, exactly. Although I will say that I would have taken a co-op horde mode.

Now you're asking for DLC? Just rent it, dude.

I just was curious if there was anything more to it... or any future plans.

When Captain Toad came out last year, it was 5 hours long and $40. I am not sure why this is $60 in comparison, though maybe you're paying for the cinematic cut scenes.

But yeah, will rent it.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but has everyone in this thread played the game?

I think it's more about the tone of the comments/questions. This thread is for people to learn more about the game and ask those who have played it what they think. It's not meant for people to, say, "oh lol 3 hour game. rentalllllllllll"

I guess Y2Kev will update the OP to reflect that perhaps this is only for those who have actually played the full game. Hence why house is getting cleaned.

"What we will not have in the thread is pulling in stuff from outside sources who have/do not have the game." Is the guideline.

Besides Rapier, is there any other gafer that played the game or this is a one man show?

I browsed through the thread and I saw no other, but maybe I missed it.

Yes, they just haven't posted in this thread from what I've seen.

We have some impressions on other threads that got locked. If you search for the thread about the latest screenshots or the 11 minutes video you can find it.

Quite a few played in the 3 other threads. It is kind of a mess with 4 The Order threads going on at once: "gone gold", "11 minutes", "spoilers" and this one.

If I had to guess I'd say one of those games cost a shitload more to make than the other.

I don't think there are too many people offering their impressions based on Youtube watchings, but I'm working through deleting those.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Ok, but do you think this is a "unique" experience? I know you said you think they accomplished what they set out to do, which was to create a very deliberate cinematic experience. What I want to know is if the game feels like something you haven't seen before in gaming, or if it's just an improvement upon previous experiences?

I think I'll answer this with what I think it's the most sincere prediction of how this game is going to be perceived.

There's two sides to the typical gamer out there today: The artsy-fartsy, collector types (like me), and the pragmatic, all-business player types. To further illustrate how this pertains to The Order, let's humor an apples to oranges comparison: Just Cause 2 vs. The Order 1886.

There is an incredible amount of "game time" in JC2. There is comparatively nil in TO. Now, your definition of value, depending which side of the coin you belong to, is in how much of the same thing are you willing to be doing until it bores you, or you cease to care about the story. In JC2 your basic actions are shooting, grappling and traversing the environment in a number of different ways. In TO your basic actions are shooting and traversing the environment. How much of that you're willing to repeat until you're bored of it, or how many different environments or situations you need to have to perform the same core actions before they're stale, is also up to the player's discretion.

In my personal, artsy fartsy, opinion, there's as much merit in The Order's approach as there is in JC2. I can play and play and play JC2 and just get bored of it for a number of reasons (repetition/story/etc). Inversely, I have my fill of The Order during it's running time and with the amount of chances its story gives me to perform the basic, core actions.

For me, it's the same value in both scenarios. But I can understand polarized opinions on this.

You see the people who keep referring to how short it is? Or comparing it to Ryse? That sort of thing, people seem to be absolutely intent on making sure everyone hates this game because.... reasons?

I don't know, it's just very fun to watch. There's always some reason why this game is awful, from QTEs to black bars to length. Have to find a reason to hate it.

Game length is a completely legitimate complaint. If it is too short I will not get it. It would have to be at least the length of Uncharted or TLOU.

Maybe there should be a bit more of a clarification. This thread isn't just for people who have played the game. But it is not a thread for people who haven't played the game to talk about assumptions which might confuse the matter. If people are interested in certain aspects of the game, they are free to engage those who have played it. If people want to draw conclusions based on the impressions, they're fine to do so, be it positive or negative. But like anywhere else, we discourage trolling, low effort replies, metacommentary, and dishonest engagement.

If someone's conclusion based on the impressions is that they want to rent the game first, there is nothing wrong with that as a reply. People should not pile on people who feel that way and act like jerks either.

So the destructible physics system isn't present, right? It was something they mentioned early on and since then I've never seen or heard anything about it.

I'm in the artsy-fartsy camp then!

I think it was shown off in one of the more recent trailers if it's about dismemberment and gore. I never considered that's how it would feature until I saw it. I'd like clarification on that myself.

Uncharted 3 can be beaten in less than 3 hours...

We're not talking about speed runs here, we're talking about legitimate playthroughs on normal just enjoying the game. There is no confirmation one way or another. UC3 was a fairly lengthy game first playthrough and just enjoying it on normal. If you start on crushing and try to find very treasure, it's going to be veryyyy long.

Query:

This on a more technical level and comes on heels of another topic made on this board- Is there adequate amount of Anisotropic Filtering (AF) in the game?

Rapier, can you say a little about the variety of combat scenarios? You say the game is a lavish production, but does it seem like a lot of effort went into keeping the combat scenarios varied in terms of enemy encounters and combat spaces?

my b. I thought my example constituted drive-by posting. I didn't mean to say that people who said they wanted to rent the game were trolling.

I'll weigh in with my impressions in about an hour; was lucky to snag a copy. Fuck you Destiny; on the shelf you go!
For at least 5 hours 😜

OP (or anyone else who has played/beaten it), while I know you stated you'd let us discover the story by ourselves, is the game worth it for the story alone? To me, the biggest reason I will pick up this game will be if the game offers a unique story and experience. Obviously, the visuals and "feel" of the game are a bonus, but for single player games I care more about how good the plot is. And please, no spoilers.

I think there is plenty of it (thankfully)

Alright this clarifys a lot I appreciate that. Just want to make sure I'm not crossing any lines.
