Uh, am I reading it wrong ?
Because it's much closer than what I thought it would be
positive thinking
Not like Vita will ever take off now unlike the PSP back then though.

That one PSP had Mon Hun to take off. These time, Mon Hun is on 3DS so it will be more difficult.

So in the high end it's not that bad but the mid-range is very weak. It has always seemed that the 3DS lacks in mid-tier titles.

Plenty of mid tier titles is something NCL needs to ensure are readily available for their hardwares.

PSP was a slow-burner, and keep growing until 2010. PSV already stop growing and this year there might be a severe decline in sw sales.

PSP had a good day one line up and didn't have a drought of software after that and had more exclusive games and bigger IP then PSV.

Let's be clear, once for all: PSV had an extremely good launch line-up. It had sort-of-big IPs, like Minna no Golf, Dynasty Warriors; less big IPs but well popular on Sony platforms, such as Disgaea, Katamari Damacy; a new SQEX IP, Army Corpse of Hell, and an hunting action from SQEX, Lord of Apocalypse; it had a Western Sony IP which proved to be somewhat popular on PS3, Uncharted; also, Ridge Racer. And more niche games such as Dream Club, Kamaitachi no Yoru, BlazBlue, Marvel vs. Capcom, Virtua Tennis 4. This is a big and complete launch line-up, perhaps one of the best among Sony platforms.

In hindsight, maybe it would've been a good idea to spread out the launch titles a bit more.

And after day 1 games Vita got nothing at all only late port and niche games who vita would do better with that drought.
PSP launch in Japan was bad but it didn't have the drought Vita had.
In west in other hand the line up was better then Vita one from the day 1,from Sony we got World Tour Soccer,Wipeout Pure,Untold Legends,Twisted Metal,Untold Legends,NBA,Gretzky NHL,Ape Escape and from 3rd party: Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix,Tiger Woods PGA Tour,Spider-Man 2,Ridge Racer(Vita version look like a demo compared to PSP one),NFL Street 2,Need for Speed: Underground ,Metal Gear Acid,Lumines,Dynasty Warriors,Darkstalkers Chronicle and didn't have the drought Vita had.

If God Eater 2 Vita debuts that well it will be the first piece of good news for the system in quite a while.

I'm expecting God Eater 2: Rage Burst to become the best selling Vita game in Japan.

Is 500k to 1 Million really mid-tier though?

I feel like that's pretty high tier. It just looks smaller compared to the 1 million+ sellers and then the Multi million MonhunPokeWatchKarts.

That's kind of he change the industry has been going through.

The mid tier is shrinking, but what comprises the mid-tier is growing sales band wise.

It's the essence of polarization. The winners also generally win more in this kind of a situation, though there are less of them overall.

We're seeing that last part not as pronounced though as in the West due to the shift toward mobile, so we don't have the Japanese equivalent of selling 45 million copies of GTA V appear on a dedicated device.

There's no psp version so i think this could be a exception

But that is already reflected in the first week sales being greater than or equal to the sales of the initial release. It will still probably follow the same sales trajectory.

Either way it's still going to (one of the) best selling Vita games so I guess it's a moot point.

It's looking very possible but aren't rereleases generally more frontloaded?

It would likely be front loaded. But I do expect week 1 sales to be much higher than GE2 week 1 sales which would likely mean that even if sales are front loaded they should exceed 400k LT anyway.

Plus this time there is the lack of PSP version + larger install base on Vita which has been in need of a big title for a while.

I'm not sure the bolded means anything to be honest. It sure hasn't helped Wii U games.

It's an expansion. No one should expect the game to sell as good as the original release.

If GE2:RB (PSV+PS4) sells 400k+ it would be a huge success for the franchise considering how hunting expansions are selling at the moment.

I believe that GE2: RB situation on Vita is not relevant the way it looks like it will be. Apart some fetish for Vita performance, GE2:RB numbers are not important if they stay around GE2 numbers +/- 15%.

The real "thing" with Rage Burst performance is PS4 version, that looks like it will bomb. It shows that the strategy of putting action-hunting games on consoles does not work for Japan. We will have to see what will be the impact in the west (assuming Rage Burst will be released in the west) to see what is in the cards for this kind of handheld-centric game.

I can see 400k across PSV and PS4. Probably not much more but i'd be surprised if retail + digital sell in doesn't reach 400k.

That's why Toukidsn Kiwami is only on PS4 in the west (as well as PSV) and that's really good to see from Koei. Shame the game will probably not sell well.

If God Eater 2 Rage Burst had the same first week sales of God Eater 2 Vita and then sold 0 copies after that, it'd make the game as the 5th best selling title on Vita. And it'd take less than 50K more to become 3rd (Freedom Wars = 330K, God Eater 2 = 396K).

Yeah, and if both Toukiden and GE2:RB sell well on PS4 in the west, we will likely see more companies trying the "handheld in Japan and console in the west" approach. If the sales on PS4 are not relevant in the west, then these games will only have future in handhelds (or smartphones, if it ever takes over handhelds).

Pretty sure Toukiden Kiwami is coming to PS4 in Japan in April.

What I mean is simultaneous PS4 and PSV launch. Where as the game in Japan was only released on PSV/PSP last year.

Besides, in Japan it's just a re release like all of Koei's PS4 games.

I think the Vita game will go up, but the PS4 game won't be too hot.

I would assume the main reason for the PS4 SKU was the west. It will be interesting to see how PS4 SKU of the Tokiden and GE perform outside Japan.

GE2 (PSV + PSP) = around 600k (400k:200k)

I would be surprised if GE2RB did 400k+ on the Vita. 50k is the absolute max I can see the PS4 SKU reaching. In conclusion if totals at 450k I will be impressed.

if the vita version is up a noticeable degree there won't be anything to make up

PSP : God Eater Burst ( Bandai Namco ) { 2010-10-28 } - 267,178 / 458,490
PSV : God Eater 2 ( Bandai Namco ) { 2013-11-14 } - 258,826 / 393,531

given GE2Vita was best selling Vita game in 2013 on PSN, that version likely outsold GEB.

best version had legs tho
PSP : God Eater Burst [PSP the Best] ( Bandai Namco ) { 2011-09-15 } - 3,602 / 86,785
PSP : God Eater Burst [PSP the Best 2nd Print] ( Bandai Namco ) { 2013-06-06 } - 2,376 / 6,387

Well, it is expected that expanded versions sell less than the original ones. The question is how well the PS4 version will fare. The fact that RB on Vita may do the same as GE2 did probably means that a lot of people who got GE on PSP switched to Vita instead of PS4, meaning that the appeal of such games in Japan is almost exclusively on handhelds. All that remains is the eventual western release.

Don't forget Toukiden Kiwami sales on PSP were abysmal.

I used the daily top 10 grossing games on iPhone in Japan by App Annie. I gave 10 points to the first, 9 to the second, etc. Did that for the 365 top 10 from 2014, and here is the result.

wiaGNJa.png

Don't use the points for estimate the revenue, or even the distance between two games, it would be a mistake. This chart can only give an idea of what is the yearly top, nothing more.

I'll try to do this every months, maybe for Android and also premium games.

Here's the january top 10.

Very early days, wouldn't try to read too much into it either direction outside of it not starting as a shooting star or total disaster on day one.

[3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D (wk2) <= [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (wk2)

so the wise men in YSO say that GE2BR is doing similar to GE2 on Vita and 1/3 of PSP on PS4, comgnet has PS4 version around 1/8 of Vita
and Majora's second week is lower compared to Ocarina

wow I never thought about that could happen, YSO's wise men really are indicative for predictions!!!!!

Really curious to see how this sold. It literally came out of nowhere (though the manga and the anime are popular).

The tutorial is like the worst ever but the game is actually really good when it kicks in. One of the better Bamco games so word of mouth may give it slightly stronger legs than as would be typically expected.

I don't know what happens in the mind of some people in charge of defining release dates, but of all dates in the year, IA/VT at the same day as Persona 4 Dancing looks like a carefully planned joke.

are you playing it ? I have this game on my radar since it was announced, I was curious cause it's based from a popular manga/anime and from the first CM I watched the gameplay was clearly a side scrolling beat'em up
The latest videos show a support character, I'd like to know more about this game, maybe in the future I will put it on my buy list (first comes Maple Tales)

This seems like a bad idea which could negatively affect both games (with one far more than the other). They couldn't even push it back a week or something?

A week apart wouldn't make much difference, since it would demand people willing to buy two rhythm games almost at the same time.

Maybe a month apart would be better. The fans would be able to finish one game and even sell if they wanted to raise money to buy the other.
