Danganronpa Community Thread: Thrills! Chills! Kills! Despair!

I bought a Vita to play these games. Just finished up with Goodbye Despair on Sunday. What a great ending. I slightly prefer the first game (...I think), but both games were really great. Good fun, great despair, and fantastic characters.

Kyoko was my favorite from the first game, and Chiaki was my favorite from the second. Rest of the cast were all pretty good, too (aside from Teruteru). I can't wait for the next game. Another Episode's game play probably won't appeal to me as much, but I'm sure the story will still be great, and then we all know that a third main game will be coming.

DR2 spoilers:
I don't care how they do it, but there has to be a way to bring Chiaki back. :(

Yeah, it's hard to choose, but I tend to prefer the first as well. DR2 improves on nearly everything, but the unique setting, characters, vibe and experience of the first game is hard to beat. I also preferred the more claustrophobic and oppressive setting of the school to the sprawling and sometimes goofier Jabberwock Island. But like I said, they're both superb and almost equal in my eyes.

Pretty funny how much things changed. The trust/distrust mechnic is pretty cool. Wonder if they'll attempt something like that in 3.

Also, NISA usually announces games in February right? I'm hoping/expecting Another Episode to be announced there.

Holy crap, the end of Chapter 2 (of the second game) was crazy, lots of twist and turns, nice character stuff too, time for Chapter 3!

Hey guys! I'm about to start my playthrough of the first game, and I was wondering if there was a spoiler-free guide or if I even need one?

There was something like this for 999, and I found it super helpful.

I thought apart from one or two moments, the game isn't too hard, so you should be fine without a guide. I personally felt the Phoenix Wright games were harder but maybe that's bbecause played them first.

I don't mind working through the tough parts, I was more concerned about following branching story segments if any existed.

I vastly prefer the second game over the first. The cast of the first game sucked outside of Celeste. Nagito is a billion times better than Byakuya. Nagito is better than everyone in the first game combined and his own game combined. Nagito is life. DR2 chapters 4+5 eat DR1's face.

First game had better investigation music though

I've been playing through Danganronpa this whole month and it's been really a rollercoaster ride. At first, I was a bit worried I wouldn't like it but after the first case, it's been pretty good with it's twist and turns...also some predictable ones as well.

Been streaming it on my Twitch channel as well. Up to Chapter 4 and glad to see my waifu alive.

Oh. Surprised there were two inside the long poster tube..but hey, not complaining.

Now local hobby shop..when are you bringing in the Danganronpa 2 series variation?

I'll buy every tube till I get Chiaki dammit

We've finally entered the month when Danganronpa: Another Episode gets announced for North America, right? Right.

There's an outside chance it won't be, but I would honestly be shocked if that was the case. I'm hoping for a June release, but expect a September/October release... One can dream.

A press conference this month? Yeah that sounds like a time they'd announce the next Danganronpa game.....& another LE to drain my wallet...

Yeah, my wallet will be hurting from the first half of this year, but a Danganronpa LE would be totally worth it.

I'd love for it to include Danganronpa: Zero... Or for NISA to even translate it and sell it on their store. A stretch, I know, but I would absolutely love it.

That last chapter of the second game, jeeze, was crazy! I had a feeling the latecomer was a fake out, and damn was it good to see the 'big 3' pop in at the end!

Watched a few videos of AE, seems a bit like a low budget FPS, but being Danganronpa I'm sure it'll be great! I assume they'll be a proper Danganronpa 3 though right?

Oh, and fuck Hangmans Gambit, it was the only part of both games I groaned anytime I saw it!

NISA's yearly press conference where they announce a bunch of game localizations, also glad to see you unbanned
I could've sworn at one event/conference, that's how the first game was confirmed for the US, then a few weeks after DR1's release, DR2 was confirmed.

DR1 was announced at Anime Expo in July of 2013. Released in Feb 2014.

NISA held their event on Feb 2014 and announced DR2 then.

DR2 was announced two days after the release of DR1, at the February Press Event. Apparently the first had good pre-orders and they were willing to take the risk.

Danganronpa to be talked about at Game Developers Conference

Finally, make time to attend "My Ordinary Process for Crafting Extra-Ordinary Stories" from Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka. The game itself is well-known in Japan (and becoming well-known in the West) for its remarkably charming characters; attendees of this talk will learn about the well-defined, structured process used to craft those characters. They'll also walk away with practical advice on how to best craft characters that appeal to both a Japanese and a global audience.

A mod decided me calling some people stupid that were constantly twisting my words into some sort of conspiracy theory (after I told them quite a few times it wasn't) and thought that was enough to justify a ban. And yes, I'm a bit bitter about that :p

Moving on from that... Hoping for Another Episode localization announcement!

lol, the reason this time too...so simple to avoid
Just going to say. If it's something trivial enough to give a day ban for... It's silly to ban for it period. Just throw a warning and say that crossed a line on something (especially something as ridiculously vague as it was)

And I'll now move on from my annoyance on that, too

Not too much longer until the NISA conference, no?

Hello DanGAFronpa (sorry).

So last night I had a terrible nightmare. I figured if there is any positive outcome from it is being able to share my story with you guys for your enjoyment in relation to this great series.

As it often happens in dreams that we have, I was aware of certain things that weren’t exactly clearly explained. I was part of a group of 16 or so young adults (early to late 20’s, nobody seemed younger or older than that), and we were trapped in a sort of outdoor campsite with various large cabins each with a large ‘living room’, a kitchen, and many bedrooms. It actually seemed like a rather great place for groups of friends or families to hang out at.

So, again, I didn’t know how or by whom, but we were trapped and we all knew it. I was aware that things were very familiar to the Danganronpa main game entries, but I had decided to keep that info to myself, since bringing up the fact that things were being set up for mass killings wouldn’t exactly do us any good. I even remember being in one of the cabin’s kitchen and being glad that there were no knives or similarly dangerous utensils.

Now, I must say I’m a rather reserved person; let’s just say I prefer to listen to others. But in this dream, I was actually getting to know many members of the group. I vividly recall Evie, a sweet young lady that seemed delicate as a flower but was very nice to talk to and be with. I also remember two guys that resembled old college mates from my real life, and a…robust, loud, energetic young woman with short gray hair that loved to be the center of attention by pulling pranks on everyone; nothing too serious, but certainly to the point of being annoying. Regardless, I was quite glad that I was getting to know them and things seemed safe enough; yeah, we were trapped, but things weren’t so bad.

Until it happened.

At some point, 4 or 5 of the guys from the group went off somewhere on their own. When we found them…let’s just say the only thing that was missing was that screeching sound from the games that just says ‘DEATH’. All dead, blood everywhere. Everyone was shaken, and I wanted to let them know what I knew, or what I thought I knew, but it still made more sense to me to keep quiet. I decided to stick with Evie since she took the tragedy the hardest.

Unfortunately my dream skipped around, and I don’t remember much after this point until the next horrible event. I don’t know why, but I had gone off with the two old college mates alongside loud woman to find…something. Big mistake. We had left four of the girls at one of the cabins, and as we were walking back to them one of the men from the group was about to say: “You know, this whole series of events…it reminds me of this video game series, Dangan—“.

I opened the door to the cabin, somewhat eager to hear what he was going to say, only to find myself in deep despair very soon thereafter. Corpses on the ground again; less blood, but no life. I couldn’t look for her. What if? I couldn’t possibly begin to accept it. I fell on my knees and let out a piercing scream that still sends chills down my spine. It felt real, I felt like I actually yelled in my sleep. I then turned around at one of the guys that had managed to look around the scene. “Evie?”, I asked him. “Everyone; Evie too”, he replied. I somehow collapsed further down, crying unstoppably, wondering what could possibly come next…

Then I woke up. And…now what? I love this series, and I particularly enjoy how they can evoke these types of feelings of despair and sadness on players, which in a way is all fine and dandy when everything is fiction. But I wonder if Danganronpa crossed a line with me overnight.

We shall see.

3.5 hours left until NISA's conference.

Also, just for the heck of it, I was checking ESRB for any new ratings/"leaks" & figured "eh, I'll check for Danganronpa" & read the rating summary for DR2. Holy crap, way to mention a direct quote featuring a spoiler near the END OF THE GAME.
