This seems unreal. How does the body stay alive when the head is removed? Do they have medical equipment that can simulate all bodily functions in the meantime?

The head and the donor body will be cooled so that they will survive longer without oxygen.

One step closer to...

Not really.

okay i guess i missed out on a good movie here as a kid, especially as a horror fan, but what movie is this from?

Return to Oz. One of the most Fucked up movies ever created, but its also pretty damn awesome.

No kidding. I only vaguely remember this movie, but as soon as I saw the picture, I knew exactly what it was.

Glad I'm not the only one. I still occasionally had nightmares about those roller hand/feet henchmen. *shivers*

Until we cure Alzheimer's there will be no stopping the degeneration of the brain.

No, it would be magnitudes more difficult

I know, that's why I said about 20-30 years at best. It's unfortunate the brain will still degenerate, but it could give those with declining bodies but sharp minds a new "lease on life" to say.

To make up for it, it had one of the best bros in any movie ever.

I wonder if one day instead of the "death penalty", we instead go for a "you'll die, then we will take your body and give it to some rich SOB to use"

You wouldn't live forever. Your brain would still degrade and you'd get dementia or something else. You'd die with a pretty sweet body though.

This is a good idea for many reasons, but I don't believe it's two years away. Limb transplants aren't even progressing as fast as they should be, much less an entire body.

Let's work on fingers, toes, hands, feet, arms, legs before we work on the whole damn body. Much easier to test as well.

This isn't some kind of immortality surgery. It would probably only be used in very specific trauma death injuries or paraplegics. The head and the donor body would need to be pre-middle aged I would imagine, prolly no more than mid to late 40's.

Until we cure Alzheimer's, or understand what even causes it, no 80 year old is going to get a fresh body just because they have the money. And even if they did, their mind is still deteriorating from old age.

Still though, this is cool as fuck. And it would allow us to further understand what happens when we die and how our brain deals with it.

So let's say a man commits a murder, is convicted and sentenced to death. We could guillotine that dude and give his body to somebody else...

not sure how I feel about this

If this procedure were to ever become mainstream it would still be nearly impossible to find full body donors. How many causes of death would even leave full bodies in donatable condition?

An sure the Russians did something like this to a dog during the cold war. Think the head lived on somekind of machine. It did after a few hours.

Don't do it!!!

Murder would take on a whole new meaning. Can you imagine the number of people that would be kidnapped and killed to use for such things? Image in the black market for that. Your talking about giving people new lives, some people would trade their whole fortune for that.

It would really test the morals of society, you want to live an extra 50/100 years? You gotta kill someone. The sad thing is there are many people in the world who could justify that to themselves.

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"

I am sure some terrible group known for this kind of thing is reading this article and thinking..."new revenue stream"

I'm surprised this hasn't been asked yet.. but WHO is the next person identification-wise??

For example, if it's Bob's body and Bill's head...who is the new person? Bill or Bob? I mean, 90% of the new person is Bob, and only 10% is Bill...yet it is Bill's brain and Bob's heart.

How would you resolve this?? A brain transplant??

Lets say that is the solution, would you be without any of your old memories and not be "you". Perhaps we could do a partial brain transplant replacing centers involved in the disease/decay...

Killing someone to take their body... I can't even imagine.

Lots more research is needed. Transplanting hands or organs are already quite difficult with lots of side effects. Heavy medication can be permanent depending on whether the body accepts the new organ/body part or not.
Therefore I'm not very optimistic about the outcome of head transplantation, but I do hope for a success.

I have a hard time believing this is only two years away, unless they mean more animal testing.

Also, the next time we try it on a monkey we should teach it enough sign language first to be able to describe its brush with death afterwards.

A bit grotesque. Don't think it'll be possible in 2 years but who knows.

The philosophical problems also seem a bit overblown.

A head/brain transplant could answer so many questions but raise so many more.

I've always wondered if my brain had to be given to someone else, would they be me? Or would it just be me in another body? This would answer the question of whether we have a soul or not.

If we had souls then our consciousness/who we are will exist in some other way and a brain/head transplant would just carry over thoughts and memories but not the consciousness of that person. If we don't have souls then I'd just simply be in another person's body.

Nobody knows. I'm always intrigued. I personally believe I'd just be me in another person's body.
