No kidding. I only vaguely remember this movie, but as soon as I saw the picture, I knew exactly what it was.
I know, that's why I said about 20-30 years at best. It's unfortunate the brain will still degenerate, but it could give those with declining bodies but sharp minds a new "lease on life" to say.

I gotta say . . . this freaks me out a bit.
This is a good idea for many reasons, but I don't believe it's two years away. Limb transplants aren't even progressing as fast as they should be, much less an entire body.
Let's work on fingers, toes, hands, feet, arms, legs before we work on the whole damn body. Much easier to test as well.

This isn't some kind of immortality surgery. It would probably only be used in very specific trauma death injuries or paraplegics. The head and the donor body would need to be pre-middle aged I would imagine, prolly no more than mid to late 40's.
Until we cure Alzheimer's, or understand what even causes it, no 80 year old is going to get a fresh body just because they have the money. And even if they did, their mind is still deteriorating from old age.
Still though, this is cool as fuck. And it would allow us to further understand what happens when we die and how our brain deals with it.

Murder would take on a whole new meaning. Can you imagine the number of people that would be kidnapped and killed to use for such things? Image in the black market for that. Your talking about giving people new lives, some people would trade their whole fortune for that.
It would really test the morals of society, you want to live an extra 50/100 years? You gotta kill someone. The sad thing is there are many people in the world who could justify that to themselves.

Lets say that is the solution, would you be without any of your old memories and not be "you". Perhaps we could do a partial brain transplant replacing centers involved in the disease/decay...

This is fantastic.
Lots more research is needed. Transplanting hands or organs are already quite difficult with lots of side effects. Heavy medication can be permanent depending on whether the body accepts the new organ/body part or not.
Therefore I'm not very optimistic about the outcome of head transplantation, but I do hope for a success.

I've always wondered if my brain had to be given to someone else, would they be me? Or would it just be me in another body? This would answer the question of whether we have a soul or not.
If we had souls then our consciousness/who we are will exist in some other way and a brain/head transplant would just carry over thoughts and memories but not the consciousness of that person. If we don't have souls then I'd just simply be in another person's body.
Nobody knows. I'm always intrigued. I personally believe I'd just be me in another person's body.
