Face off DmC X1 PS4. Where for art thou AF!

The face off is up and AF is higher on X1 than PS4...so the world is in trouble.

Instead, the main variable in graphical quality centres on how well the artwork is displayed at a distance and from steeper angles. The Xbox One and PC versions of DmC feature a high level of anisotropic filtering that keeps textures looking crisp and clear, whereas the PS4 game uses a simpler trilinear technique instead. This results in textures appearing blurry from a distance on the Sony platform, diminishing image quality significantly compared to both PC and Xbox One.

there's already an AF on PS4 thread and a DmC DF comparison thread. This is a bit much.

It is a new face off and I searched and it was not posted so....

It does confirm the X1 improvement and performance stuff between the 2, although now seems to say PS4 hardly tears and X1 does which is different from the last one?!?

The difference is notable, but not massively important in general living room conditions, where you're seated two or three metres from the screen.

Waits for the article about how Anisotropic filtering is the most important part of visuals & why it matters.

Sony just shot themselves in the foot. I don’t know how much the rest of you know about graphics technology (I’m an expert), but AF and AA are huge parts of it. It’s not like it is in the PC space you can become successful by adjusting AF out of nowhere. If you screw over a playstation gamer, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is to force AF on PS4 games. What this means is gamers after hearing about this, are not going to want to purchase DMC for either PS4 nor will they purchase any sony third party games due to the lack of AF compared to Xbox One. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Cerny has alienated an entire market with this move. Sony, publicly apologize and force AF on for PS4 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

My take away from the article:

From a hardware standpoint there's no reason we're aware of why Sony's console can't deliver similarly decent texture filtering to the Xbox One and PC - after all, there's an immense level of commonality between the systems. It's not exactly clear why developers are having problems in this specific area on Sony's console, and it's something we're discussing with contacts right now, with a view to getting to the bottom of what is a rather bizarre mystery.

Good!

The circle is complete!!!!

Two (EDIT: Make that Three) Capcom published games in a row that are better on the weaker hardware.
lol
Hopefully they patch the AF, because holy shit does it make the textures look terrible on the PS4 version.

The filtering makes the textures look worse than the last gen versions.
3 straight Capcom games with issues on PS4. REmake, Revelations 2 and now this.

lol, forgot about REmake.

Umm, AF is super noticeable. You're generally always looking where it should be implemented. Why even bother with decent resolution textures if that's your stance since you won't notice the difference or decent shadows, lighting and poly count? or anything?

Well done lol.

very disappointed in sony at the moment, a console that has a much better GPU and better better Ram set up made for gaming, should never lose a faceoff to the XB1. Microsoft developer tools must be much better then sony's at the moment.

I'm more interested in why the Ps3 version looks sharper in several of those comparison pics (I'd argue there are some pics where it even looks sharper than the XO version)

Indeed, everything Capcom have released on the platform has thus far had some notable issue (usually one that isn't consistent with what we have seen the hardware as being capable of in games from other publishers) to the point where it is probably fair to say there's something going on with how they are handling PS4 development at this point.

Capcom have a long history of poor PS ports, and on PS3 there were understandable enough reasons relating to hardware architecture that could explain those... but on PS4 there really doesn't seem to be any discernable reason for them to still be botching it that we can see.

It would certainly be interesting to hear what's going on what that company behind the scenes.

Now can we safely ask the question without warriors complaining and sweeping the issue under a rug? We just want answers, this is really strange.

As someone who is really sensitive to missing/bad AF I'm pissed off about these version that are better in every other way. It really should be as simple as "PS4 is faster, it's going to have the better looking version in all aspects". I can even understand slightly more FPS drops as a result of a higher resolution but not this.
I really hope it's just an SDK fix or something.

AF is pretty important on sharp angles. Without it you get overly blurry textures for not good reason, so relax on the conspiracies, worse would be an article on how AF doesn't matter, would you be in favor of that instead?

The loss in detail along the hard angles as seen below is pretty significant, to say it's not or call out DF as if they were purposely exaggerating is pretty disingenuous.

I'm not going to run out an buy and XO for this, but every head to head leaves me wondering, wtf? why is AF affected when it's not really that taxing on modern GPUs?

Funny that textures look more defined on the PS3 version over all the others.
