Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

So there are only 12 weapons? That seems low for an rpg.

No, the magazine journalist who played the game for 400 hours, iirc, said there are a total of '1-2' weapons in the game. People I think mistook the '1-2' for 12 (6+6). But in actual fact it looks like there might just be the odd weapon or two in the entire game, and this may include secret weapons too.

That seems low to me but someone whispered in my ear just now 'gems', probably alluding to the fact that there is a rumour that you can turn certain weapons a blood red colour if you insert a gem on their member. So in reality, we may be looking at anywhere from 1-4 weapons in the entire game, including those such weapons with a different colour scheme. Which to me are not technically new weapons, but let's not get bogged down in the details here.

An appropriate response.

We've reached peak sarcasm.

Yeah, but there's the day one DLC/ultimate monster hunter edition that will give you 2 more weapons with options of adding green. Or you can buy each weapon separately from an in-game merchant for $5.99.

I really want to play these games so much but my brief time with Dark Souls gave me so much anxiety. That said, the art direction and environment design of Bloodborne look so good.

This game better be the hardest 'Souls' game yet. They've gotten easier as time has gone with Demons still being the most difficult.
I found Demons Souls the easiest lol. With a dex build with dual wielding uchigatana and kilij both sharp I ran through new game (no plus) in about 15 hours, not counting grinding, and dying on only a couple of the bosses and never more than once.

Looking forward to this game though and kinda getting impatient. I really want it now lol.

Honestly, just play with a guide if anxiety deters you to plunge in head on. The games can still be very much enjoyed with them. I kinda had the same fears going into Dark Souls so yes I looked for help, and I still loved the game. Each his own but I don't feel like I missed out on anything from not discovering the game on my own, I enjoyed it just the same.

..Then on the other hand I get anxious from "doing it wrong", so yeah..

So maybe someone can help me out. I redeemed the nightmare PS4 theme from the code posted here. I did it on the SEN website as I was out at the time. I thought it went through, but when I went to my PS4 later I don't have the option to download the theme and can't find it on the store to download either. I tried re entering the code, but now it's telling me I've already used it. Did I screw myself out of the theme somehow?

I had the same problem. Check your download list on the Playstation Store, it should be there.

Go to your themes, it'll be there waiting for you to download. Give it a go and report back.

Already did that as well. I have no idea what I did. I'm not too concerned either way. I'll submit a help ticket. If I get it, great. If not then I'll just keep using my 20th anniversary theme.

So we can run through the Chalice dungeon with a friend if we want, right?

Anyone know how that works yet? Is there any kind of matchmaking or do you use the 8-character code summon method?

Or we haven't heard yet, is my guess. I'm hoping there's some kind of matchmaking so I can just easily start a run with a friend.

Lantern checkpoints are not "overabundant" like the bonfires of Dark Souls II, you open shortcuts rather than getting new bonfires (ala Demon's Souls)

They say in Souls you are frequently scared of dying, but in Bloodborne you are also scared of what is coming to kill you - "There is a moment in Dark Souls that we will never forget: down in the Depths, picking up an item from a corpse and a slime dropping onto our head. We spent the rest of the level panning the camera endlessly for unseen threats, no longer scared of dying, but of moving. Imagine a whole game of that." - For this reason they think taking the replayability factor to CD makes more sense.
There's a Q&A about Miyazaki's ideas and philosophy regarding the game at the end.

So, soooo hyped.

Yeah, once you discover the bosses' trick it becomes really simple. It's definitely the easiest of the three imo. Even my SL1 playthrough was simple apart from Allant (which isn't really hard but takes forever).

True for all the Souls games. The gameplay is a bit like Punch Out. It all seems overwhelming at first until you figure out the pattern. Then got to just not make too many mistakes and you are golden.

It's the whole, not making mistakes part that is tough

I like the idea that "don't get hit" is actually a losing philosophy this time around.

That said, I do wonder how "regain" will work in PvP. It certainly would incentivize mashing if it functions the same way as in PvE. Not to mention that it would be actually impossible to beat gankers if they could regain health automatically while gangbanging you.

Yeah but it's the most apparent in Demon's since quite a few bosses don't require any skill at all once you find their weakpoint (like Old Hero, Adjudicator, Dragon God, Fool's Idol, Tower Knight, etc.). Dark Souls 1/2's bosses tend to test your combat skills more.

A new game mechanic that will be featured in Bloodborne is the Blood system. Players will be able to harvest blood from enemies. Blood can be used to improve the player's character, however, there are two types of blood: Pure Blood and Tainted Blood. Pure Blood can be obtained from NPC's and human players and, although it is harder to obtain, its consumption doesn't have any negative repercussions to the player's status. Tainted Blood can be obtained from common enemies and it is much easier to find. However, if the player consumes too much Tainted Blood, they will transform into a beast. Becoming a beast will make the character much harder to control and the player will be targeted by other hunters who want to get rid of the beasts. One can regain their human form by consuming Pure Blood

can anyone confirm this?? is this probably why that other hunter was attacking the player?

i got this from the wiki by the way.

Those were the rumors from last year. Sounds plausible especially with
the secret area and fight in the Alpha and mechanic that Edge said was a secret
. However we don't know for sure.

Hmm, overall I thought DeS was quite a lot easier than DkS1 (haven't played 2 yet). Didn't have to repeat areas nearly as much in DeS, and only a few bosses (the main offender being the Maneaters) took more than one or two tries. Many were laughably easy. But that could be because I played DkS first, so by the time I got to DeS I was very used to the gameplay.

The thing I am wondering about is what counter shot windows will look like in PvP. the game could become centered "I dare you to hit me" play if the windows are too open. I think this because you can counter shot at range. On the other hand, if it's like Dark Souls parrying, the game will be very very space driven. It's gonna be interesting to see. I hope they have figured out how to balance the threat of stunlock.

Jesus please don't be that bad in the final game damn....smh

Sadly, I think it almost certainly will, at least for when they first spawn the chalice dungeon. I recall the load being much faster once the dungeon had loaded for the first time. he dies and I think it respawns him quicker thereafter.

I guess that's the price you pay for randomly generated dungeons like this. They seem pretty high quality. If you saw any of the video (now taken down I believe) you were likely impressed with how great they look like I was.

Final point: I think the as yet undiscussed mechanic in the game is going to be a more accessible world tendency system that is visualized by a changing time of day. Everyone is hoping for beast mode, but I think that the hype might be unsustainable on that front. That kind of truly asymmetric gameplay seems too difficult to design and balance in a game like this. Maybe I will be wrong though. It happens often.
