Lol. Renault are going to get pissed off with RBR being so publicly negative. Imagine Renault stop serving them. Neither Honda, Mercedes or Ferrari will want to give them engines. It'll be RedBull Cosworth.

Crazy to see Danny on a second engine already though. It also seems that the first engine can't be repaired either.

So lets recap all the main news happening in F1 right now;

Sauber - imploding before even making the grid. Kaltenborn probably going to spend some time in jail at this rate, Sauber may not even be leaving the country with their assets.

Mclaren - super stoked if the car doesn't qualify dead last. Setting their expectations high here.

Redbull - Renault engine is a turd. Massively down on power, no faith in reliability.

Manor - will they / wont they race? Will they race this season?

Other things of note: Ferrari appear to be best of the rest, and Mercedes have stretched out their advantage.

Mercedes are humiliating everyone else on the grid right now.

That's all true to the point. But lets not forget the upsides either:
FER - how much were they able to close the gap?
WIL - will they be able to fight off FER and stay #2 team?
STR - will they beat out RBR?
LOT - how big will their jump be, now that they have the best PU?

Is that new info? Because they were saying earlier that they thought they might be able to.

Just saw it on autosport. I'm sure we'll hear either way.

Lotus were 2 seconds off the best pace in FP1 and then 2.4 off in FP2. As much as I thought they'd be much better they look like they might struggle despite that engine.

As Marcus Ericsson and Felipe Nasr put in their first laps in Australia on Friday, Sauber were told to have "sensible discussions" with Giedo van der Garde.

Sauber were back at the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday for the latest chapter in the van der Garde saga.

The Dutchman is trying to force Sauber to let him race this weekend after the courts ruled that he was entitled to a seat with the Swiss team.

Sauber, though, appear to be doing all they can to keep Ericsson and Nasr as their line-up.

According to van der Garde's lawyer Jim Peters, Sauber's lawyers sent an email late Thursday night insisting that they had no contract with the Dutchman and therefore saw no reason to help him secure the required documents.

Peters explained that in doing so Sauber were blocking the driver from getting the super licence he is required to hold in order to race.

ABC Online reports Peters as having told the judge: "Sauber simply refuses to complete the paperwork. All Sauber has to do is sign the form.

"Sauber's taken the position that it will continue to prevent Mr van der Garde from getting a licence to drive by refusing to recognise him as one of the nominated drivers."

Peters also urged the court to seize Sauber's assets immediately as they are heading to Malaysia early next week.

"Time is of the essence in this matter," he stated.

"Sauber will leave the jurisdiction on Monday and one of the orders we seek is sequestration today or tomorrow of the racing equipment.

"The need for expedition is great, otherwise our entitlement to relief will be lost."

The day's proceedings ended with the judge reportedly urging both parties to "have very sensible discussions."

The next instalment of the saga is set to take place on Saturday morning when they return to court.

So basically, Sauber, after being ordered in a Swiss court, and again, in court in Australia; are refusing to acknowledge any contract with Van Der Garde and not complying with court orders.

Yeh, Sauber definitely isn't leaving Australia with any assets.

Better start watching the Government Auctions, might score yourself some cheap F1 cars. Maybe Manor can score themselves a cheap 2015 chasis?

They wont compete for wins for sure - but I still expect them to make a huge leap compared to last year.

There's no contract lodged (in Sauber's view) with the CRB, so why should they sign anything?

It's one legislation (Australian law) vs another (FIA). It's far from simple.

I would really expect them to be better than FOI. Not enough to challenge WIlliams, Ferrari or even Red Bull, but top of the pack of also-rans.

This right away. But later in the season I wouldn´t be too surprised if they gave RBR a run for their money...

Button says McLaren is 2.5s off the next quickest car after the Mercedes. So that's promising.

Andrew Benson ‏@andrewbensonf1 4m4 minutes ago

Honda have nine engine development "tokens" to use this year; average of rivals' unused so far (Merc 7 remaining, Ferrari 10, Renault 12)

It's hilarious how out of all the teams Ferrari seems to the one who actually made the biggest improvements. Absolutely no one would have guessed this last year.

Merc probably still too strong and Ferrari will fuck it up anyway, but hey.

Hopefully Nasr wasn't anywhere close ...

From my experience in Hockenheim 2003 I can confirm that an F1 cars wins from a pigeon. All that remains is a fluffy cloud.

The poor sucker wondered around track for 10 minutes before thinking it was a good idea to get a closer look

So Sauber did not allow Guiedo to drive or made any move to get him super license. His layers are now fighting to lock the possessions of Sauber out of travel.

What a season opener. :D

sauber was probably going to fold this year anyways, might as well go out with a bang instead of a whimper.

You know, I feel I did a decent job reading the on track performance of cars this year. With RBR potentially falling off, that looks to have extended Mercs advantage slightly. They're going to walk this season again. Very impressive development effort from the Germans.

McLaren indeed were putting on a brave face all this time. They built a dog with the best engine last year. It's not really surprising that the car is currently a dog this year. They're going to be fighting Sauber and Manor for last place, folks. As a Lewis fan all I can say is I told you so. While Button fans we're claiming us to be bitter, many of us were pointing out accurately that Martin Whitmarsh was single-handedly destroying McLaren's decades of racing heritage in order to appease his favored son, Benson. Well, congratulations. You got to keep both Benson and a shitty car. Thank god Lewis fled that sinking ship. McLaren is probably going to go through the Williams-Mechachrome phase of shitty irrelevance. Macca fans better hope there's a Williams-Martini transition on the horizon, because otherwise they just married themselves to a new version of the Cosworth. Dennis should never have stepped down as principal. None of this would've happened then.

Red Bull are not the best of the rest. I feel like this is not the first Melbourne weekend where the STR looks to be on equal footing with the parent team. That's odd, but this race is also a bit of an outlier in car performance.

Ferrari are once again fast on Friday. I assume they'll be quick on Saturday too, but will they suddenly slow down when the race comes and fuel flow is controlled again? I remember them being pretty good in practices last year, only to be well off the pace in the race due to fuel management. I'm not sure if they demonstrated any change in that regard during testing.

Williams isn't showing all their cards just yet. I'll wait until FP3 before determining if Ferrari really overtook them.

The off track stuff is wild. Bernie is really going to run this sport into the ground. It's not embracing new technologies. It's not very fan friendly at neither the track nor on tv. For a sport that generates so much numerical data, there is no stats database. I mean, the NBA, NFL and mlb all have embraced the stats revolution and offer comprehensive databases online. There is no such thing for F1. You already have to dig around the site just to find paper driving records. I fear this sport I love won't see the end of this decade. PEACE.

Analysis that I've seen so far seems to indicate that their race pace isn't too shabby, and they're actually struggling for single lap pace more than anything.

When people go to a GP (ideally if anyone has been to Canada) where do you buy your tickets? I know the official F1 site sells tickets, but given their pricing on other items it seems like they may be more expensive.

I may have a chance to attend the Canadian GP this year so I want to start seeing how much it would cost (probably Sunday only due to travel timing).

THIS

For the "most advanced sport" this is embarrasing, they were late to the HD era, years after sports like NBA or NFL, now they are putting everything behind a paywall and removing even the most basic live timing and archive of stats, and even if you pay, you get an awful service, shitty videos, 0 stats, live timing is a joke, website sucks, apps sucks, it's fucking ridiculous.

They've never let me down. I know a lot of people go direct though.

Unrelated, this F1.com website is massively fucky for me. Wont log in at all in Firefox, and if I log in using IE I get a "There is a problem with your account" warning.

.7 off the pace of Mercedes? Eeeekk. Happy to see Ferrari heading up the best of the rest though. I expect it to be another season of HAM v ROS but hopefully the other teams can nick some wins off them to shake things up. Not very likely though. If only Mercedes drivers had personalities as good as their cars. Is it going to be the douchenozzle or the douchebag who takes the title this year?

Yep, she's broken. They're sorting out some pretty big teething problems. Going live on the first day of the season - real smart.

I eventually got live timing working for FP2, but basic only - none of the fancy extras I signed up for. Once it's working though, it looks like it's going to be everything I hoped it would be. Tons of real data, awesome for a big screen. Premium accounts will work for both web and mobile app too. When they fix it.

cant wait for another season of hamilton whining and rosberg choking.

Sorry another question, a lot of the ticket packages are for the GP weekend. Is it difficult to sell Fri/Sat tickets if you know you can't use them?

You'll generally get multiple tickets (one for each day), so you could sell them, but god knows how much you'd get for them.

Eh, honestly I see it as a tactic for RBR to force Renault to get their shit together for next year. They could've worked on it during the season last year but still managed to have an engine the same (if not worse) than the 2014 revision.

I wouldn't be surprised to see RBR go to another supplier in the next season or two. Renault have taken them from four-time WCC winners to grateful recipients of Mercedes' sloppy seconds.

I don't think they have anywhere else to go.

Will be interesting to see how the viewing numbers go this season because everything just looks bad for the sport right now, 1 team way way out in front, 3+ teams at the back nearing complete bankruptcy, and the only new supplier this year has been so hamstrung by the development rules that they don't even think their engine can go 1 race distance.
