Can someone explain cargo train stations to me?
Are they just to bring in and export goods at industry zones?

Do I just want to give each big industry zone a connection to the main railroad running through the city? Or do I have to interconnect them to eachother? Or to commercial areas?

Man, being punished for having an educated workforce kinda sucks :<
Just make factory towns, don't put any universities in them, don't overdo it with the schools in them , connect them with public transport and a seperate road to the generic industry near them.

A 'don't get an education' policy for districts would be kind of surreal :p

I love the suggestions I've seen around of deliberately fostering an uneducated underclass to work in the factories.

Imagine if racial politics and institutional racism were modded into the game.
 
I'm really loving this game. I have this new traffic concept/idea (probably not new at all, just new to me) with concentric interconnected rings of alternating direction one-way roads and it actually seems to work as well in "practice" as it did when I theorycrafted it!

Man, I've been talking about that for days :p

It works very well, though once you make the transition to highways it breaks down a little, since cars refuse to use slower-than-highway roads to cross between rings. I'm still trying to figure out how to accommodate for that; I'm thinking of replacing the existing 2-ways with 2 parallel highway segments, but the intersections for that seem like they'd be a huge mess.

It's incredibly hard to make a super-symmetric city with a lack of X/Y Grid. Any mods to make up for this? Pixel perfect is a pain in the ass.

Yeah, I'm gonna need a snap to grid option that uses the terrain, not roads, as its point of reference. Trying to build anything is just becoming an exercise in frustration, this is why I couldn't stand Tropico 4 either; shit doesn't line up and that bothers the ever-loving shit out of me.

Factor in the lack of an undo? I'm done until both of those are modded in. Didn't even last 10 minutes before I had to stop.
 
I got traffic issues and I don't know how to fix it without major demolition and renovation. As well as the fact that I'm not sure how I should go about expanding outside my first block. Might just start over learning what I have from this first try.



Center roads coming off the original highway exits are one ways all the way to the end. Still doing pretty well for just winging it my first try. Making money hand over fist and everyone is pretty happy still.

You probably need to divert that industry traffic away from that road. Give them another route to take onto the highway and ban heavy traffic on that road.

No one comes and picks up dead people even though the cemetery is right there and only using 2 hearses. It happens all the time and the building becomes abandoned. What do I do?

They might have been going to other dead people but also you're high enough to use crematoriums empty out your cemeteries and just have crematoriums available in your city, saves space and I think they have more hearses.

Yeah, they really need either industry to level up to need well educated and higher people or something else that will attract higher educated people to it. Would be nice if they added a "high tech " option in the zoning.

Have always liked city builders, so I was excited to pick this one up! Will probably be playing it a lot this coming week since it's spring break for me.
 
This is my graph - I didn't start to make bank until 2026 and around 26 thousand population. (edit) Don't worry too much about police and fire at the start. Get them educated first and you'll get more money. Also, raise taxes to 11.

Off to build a high school and continue to create terrible roads!

Not sure what you mean. Your industry has to be connected to a highway to receive shipments of oil, ore, and forestry stuff from the outside world. If you're harvesting them on-map, then you need to (again) make sure that the two industrial centers are connected.

well i tried to zone for farming where i was harvesting oil and most of the buildings say they need raw materials.

This game is being hard on me. I really want to buy it, and have the money in my Steam account (for this + Ori, actually), but I'm guessing a sale will be coming up in a month or so.

Cargo stations - I'm not 100%, but they take a lot of cargo from industry to put onto trains and they also spawn a lot of cargo in the form of delivery vehicles to get stuff to the stores.

You can connect them just to the network or you can form your own network in the city. I don't believe you can route them like you can passenger trains.

You'll need good roads around it because it will generate a lot of traffic and there will be a line up of trucks waiting to offload.


I haven't seen an option for increasing font size.
 
So.... does educating your citizens kind of fuck you over? No one wants to work in my farms I just build. :(

There is a data map showing you what land is fertile. Can't farm land that isn't fertile.

How the hell do you deal with so much garbage? The dumps fill up pretty fast and the incinerators fill up even faster. Then they process their 400,000 units so slowly and just fill back up. They need an option to process but not pick up more so they can empty back out. Garbage dumps need to be assigned designated areas so the trucks stay where they are supposed to. Even real world garbage trucks have set routes. I think being able to paint an area for each dump that the trucks will stay within would be really useful.

Also, we need service roads. Roads that normal cars can't go down but are reserved for city services such as police, fire, garbage, ambulances and hearses. And the only time people would be able to drive normal cars down them is if their destination is on that road. (Their house or their place of work for example.) i.e. they wouldn't be allowed to use them for through-way shortcuts.

My garbage trucks keep getting stuck in traffic. And they keep filling up that i keep adding more and more which then fill up too.

I followed a truck from its dump and it slowly started filling up. 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, then suddenly went to 87%, 99%, 100%. They don't really hold much. Or people just make way too much trash. I'd do anything for a mod that made trash more tolerable. Automatic emptying, disable pickup on incinerators while emptying. I'm producing way too much trash!

I loved the first dozen hour or so of Simcity until I realized how a completely broken the game was. I've been very hesitant to pull the trigger on a similar style game ever since.
 
Yeah, the education gameplay mechanics is maybe the only real flaw in Cities. Sure, there are ways to move around the problem but I hope they will add a high tech industry at some point.

Since this game is half the price of SimCity when it launched, I dont think its much of a risk to take. Apart from this, i have been playing it and its pretty good. Just having the feeling of mod support is great. The aesthetic and sound award is definitely given to SimCity without a doubt but this game makes up for it with mod support, bigger city sizes, completely offline, and seemingly better logic behind it.
 
So I've pretty much maxed out a single 2x2km square as best I could. 53,200 residents, give or take a few thousand depending on birth/death rates.

Because I didn't purchase the tile containing the highway I couldn't modify the highway offramp, so it's highly inefficient. It's basically always backed up like that.

I filled up 5 landfills at 11k population and I just spammed incinerators until I could burn more garbage than I produced haha

I'm still swimming in money. It's so much different from SC4 where the incinerator didn't do jack shit for its maintenance cost.

You can get past it. If educated people have no other option, they will work the shitty jobs eventually.

Standard industry does. At level 3, 12 of their worker requirements is highly educated.
 
Picked this up due to GAF hype and I'm fncking impressed! The game is super addicting lol.

Here's my 2nd city:


Population is around $23k and I'm making bank... the ticker says +$40k, whatever that means, and I've got about a million dollars lol. All accomplished in about 2 hours haha. I'm not exactly sure what I did tbh besides building a crapton of buildings. Taxes for all zones are around 12-14%, and I've got enough fire, police, health, and edu buildings to cover the entire town.

It's not without it's problems though. A few of the industrial buildings have no buyers while a few can't get raw materials due to traffic. Speaking of traffic, I've about given up on trying to fix the industrial district's traffic. I've got 3 entrances to my industrial district, but most of traffic goes through one entrance instead. I'm hoping restricting the access to that entrance can fix the flow, otherwise I'm just totally gonna demolish the that side of the industrial district and let it be used for power plants or whatever.

Anyway, this is seriously a fun ass game! I've only stopped playing to post here and grab some food before I head back and try to fix this city lol.

Got a question regarding the 'High Interest Tower' unique building. It says I need a City debt of 2,000. Does that mean I have to have some loan, or my money has to go into the negative 2000?
 
So apparently there is a bug where parks significantly reduce the demand for Commercial zones.

I always thought commercial zones were very low in demand. If the bug is fixed, I am guessing there will be a significant demand for commercial zones. This in turn will make industrial zones necessary to produce goods. This in turn should require an uneducated population.

Personally, I would like to have a necessity to have low educated workers because I think the diversity is needed.

I agree that garbage strucks should have a limited range (they seem to -rarely though-go anywhere on the map)
But service roads would break the game.
Services are the only test of your traffic and road system, there are no consequences to your cars taking forever to get to work or to the shop.

The current system of services being your traffic test works beautifully imo.

Yeah I've lost 5 hours without even noticing when playing this game. The addictiveness can't be understated.

So I played a round in the NVidia control panel and you can override the game settings and apply your own AA. I have a 560ti in case anyone is wondering.

It's be nice if there were a switch that told garbage, fire, police, and hearses to only work in a particular neighborhood. A way to set up boundaries for them.

Just tried this and while the AA was certainly better, all of the text in-game was blurry. Not sure what happened there but it was enough for me to revert back to default settings :(

I'm fairly sure that's FXAA. I tried to override the application setting without FXAA checked (I can't stand blurry text) and the game was ignoring it. Pity, because whatever the internal AA solution is is garbage and should be incinerated, but my trucks are stuck in traffic.

I suspect only FXAA is being applied.

(Unity and HDR seems to cause any multisample AA to not work. Does it?)

So I just played my first 2 hours and have a city at about 4k folks. The early game has played out similarly to SC2K13, but I expect the real fun to kick in once I start building highways and crazy interchanges.

But dang, the repetitive, limited building and park models really kill a lot of the charm, which was why I enjoyed SC2K13 a lot. Does it get better with the more upgraded buildings and higher density zoning? It seems like DLC and the workshop items will take care of this issue, but right now it makes me not want to boot up my city and see how boring looking it is.
