Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

From the press release.

This sounds good. Real good. A proper account system, finally. And it looks like the Club Nintendo successor too.

The best thing: Nintendo are letting someone else deal with the online account stuff.

All they're saying is there'll be a service - no details as to what it's actually going to enable. Nintendo can still royally screw that aspect up. Still, progress...

It's Nintendo, there will be a downside.

Expecting microtransactions going forward. 99p for 50 light arrows in Zelda U. £5 to sequence break.

DeNA, please also get that huge spredsheet nintendo keeps with all our 3DS and WiiU purchases, and retrofit that in the account system!

Thanks a lot in advance.

Thank goodness, now some Nintendo fans can stop lying to themselves and others about Nintendo having an account system.

Of course it's a good thing. Nintendo have realised they can't implement (for whatever reason) what customers want and need.

Oh fucking god yes

Not gonna repeat talking about my quest to get my digital games back from Nintendo UK and their shitty, terrible customer service, but please...anyone else is better.

I mean, I don't know DeNA, maybe they're an excellent company, I don't know.
I just can't shake the feeling about this stuff should be handled in-house

So if I buy something from their e-shop later then it will be connected to the account and not the console? It will work as Sony and Microsoft's account system?
Then I'm really onboard it was about time.

Is it a gated membership service?
Or a free account system by creating a membership account to login?
I guess I am confused with the term service and system meaning something else.

Let's hope that they know a thing or two about security. I won't be keeping my card details on there anyway, but given all of the breaches in the past year or so I can easily see it happening.

great news, also because of the timings shared. so once Club Nintendo will be officially dead we will have something else ready
good to know, waiting for details.

I would bet that's one of the main reasons Nintendo were so reluctant to implement an account system themselves.

Now they have a partner to do it for them, and to blame if it all goes fuck up.
