[reddit RUMOR] Hyperkin working on "Smart Boy". Gameboy-type adapter for cellphones.

huge grain of salt, just some dude on reddit saying this is a concept for something he's working on

even tho there's a slot for gameboy cartridges there (which seems weird and hard to pull off realistically either way) he also says it should work as a bluetooth controller for anything, which is what i'd be more interested in.

regardless of what he says this is probably nothing more than some artist playing with something that would get sued on an instant but hey. I'd get it. First controller-type thing for cellphones that actually looks cool to me.

Why not just get a GBA SP/Micro? Unlike that ugly addon, you can get one for fairly cheap and it will last longer

Is it even possible to dump a rom through the iPhone port like that? I would be impressed but I'm not holding my breath ...

that's the part where this whole thing falls apart

there's no way that'd make it to market and even tho I dont know the logistics I doubt it's possible

even if it is, it'd be a ridiculous thing to sell considering dumping/downloading a ROM is a lot easier and I doubt most consumers are troubled by piracy

So the buttons end up on top of the screen. Are they just going to push down on touch screen buttons or something?

you guys know gameboy's resolution right

I mean considering the input if this ends up being a cheap way of playing just gameboy games with some sort of emulator software that displays the game screen in the right place with this thing on i'd be fine with that

My post wasn't concerned with the portion of the screen available resolution-wise, that makes sense

Shoving my phone in a plastic condom and risking having an issue answering an emergency call is not

Unless you're suggesting I buy a phone just to play GameBoy games in which case I'd just live with with what's on the eshop on my 3DS

April Fools isn't for two days, silly.

Really though that thing is crazy looking. Also can't recall who Hyperkin is, but do they make okay products?

I'm not against the idea of this type of thing myself but this particular project is significantly flawed.

It'd be great something like a Retron addon for smartphones so users could play their legal cartridge copy of multiple handheld games but I really don't know how such a concept would be implemented.

Honestly I think it's a fun idea, but I'd prefer a similar solution with more traditional controls, like an analog stick and a few more buttons. That way I could play other Android games as well. If I wanted to play specifically Game Boy games, I'd probably just use the actual handheld.

It's cute. It'd make a great $10 Thinkgeek toy and I'd probably buy one and play Pokémon Yellow again like it was 1998.

Besides looking fake as heck, that design is horrible. Not aesthetically but only one or at best very few smartphones would be supported.

I would like to have a similar and not unhandy controller-adapter-thingy for my Note 3 though. Would love to play PSP/SNES stuff :(

I like that they attempt to play real cartridges, but I doubt they can really make that happen... It's just a clunky bluetooth controller beyond that.

If it's anything like the Retron 5... they're just reading the cartridge and doing a ROM dump to their (illegally used open source) emulator.
