Presumably the lack of option goes for other platforms that the YouTube app is on as well.

I have a 100mbps connection, both PS3 and PS4 wired to my router, and I can barely seem to get what looks like 480p quality whenever I watch a video. Very, very rarely do I see it jump to 720p, at most.

On my laptop, I can stream 4K on YouTube really smoothly, even over Wi-Fi! So what's the problem? Is the PS4 (the platform I use most) throttling my internet speed? But then, Netflix on the PS4 allows me to stream in 1080p/5.1 sound without a hitch.

On the browser version of YouTube, in the user settings there are options to defaulting to HD video, so I'm stumped as to why this option is missing on the console YouTube app.

I can bring up an HD video on my laptop, streams smoothly without a hitch. Bring up the same video on the PS4 in the YouTube app, and it barely scrapes 480p.

I can't be the only one who has this issue? Does anyone have any tips or ways to fix it? As it stands, the app is super useful, but the lack of HD playback is really killing it for me.

Could it be a rendering issue? I don't know if the youtube app has a bottleneck or can't take advantage of the systems' full specs.

stupid question to ask but are the videos you watch in HD on your browser? also i think the youtube app on ps3/4 stream video rather than keep it at a constant resolution

I think the Xbox One is missing this toggle as well. I'd love to have it, because I'd rather wait a few seconds for the stream to buffer 1080p rather than how it is now that the first quarter of the video is low resolution and takes a while to switch to 1080p.

Personally my videos play in the best quality possible by default in the app not quite sure what the issue is on your end.

Theres usually a bit of stream buffering at first though, and keep in mind youtube 1080 on a big tv doesn't look great.

use PS4 web browser and go to youtube.com/tv see how those videos look in comparison, and try and sync it with your account. i know on chrome youtube.com/tv gives me an option to view wideo info like stream rate and video resolution.

Dimensions: 1920 x 1080 * 1
Resolution: 1280 x 720

(the browser version goes up to 1080p)

Glad that's cleared some things up for you. Youtube compression sucks balls. Netflix does a bang up job though. General rule of thumb on compression is 4:1. have a video set to 4 times your screens resolution. 4K compressed video on 1080p screen looks really nice. though 720p on small screens is usually okay because of the pixel density.

Also make sure your image enhancements of the tv are turned off, or at least down. This goes for settings like sharpening and edge enhancement. These tend to negatively impact YouTube compression and image quality in general.

4K is double the resolution of 1080p, not 4 times of it.

Its double the number of pixels on both axis. You would need 4 1080p images to fill the space of one 4k image.

They automatically play the highest quality they can, I'm pretty sure. I definitely get HD video on PS4, 60fps too. If you're only getting 480p something is up. Is your PS4 on Wi-Fi? Try wiring it.

This is a wider Youtube issue. There should be an option to force the best quality videos on all their platforms.

I would genuinely pay a (small) subscription fee for (noticeably) higher bitrate videos.

Oh of course, I followed calibration guides and turned all that crap off as soon as I got the TV.

Sorry for the bump (found this while googling), but I found a work-around that seems to work though for the PS4 youtube app.

Start the video on your phone, click the gear, adjust quality to max, set output to your Ps4. All videos will now default to hd.

It was driving me mad having to watch everything at 480 on my 55" tv. This seems to work! Not sure if it is 1080p though.
