Turok: Dinosaur Hunter - Now at 60fps!

Hey GAF,

If you want to play the PC game today, you basically need N_glide for it to work at all. N_glide allows custom resolutions and proper 4:3 support...But even then, the game has extremely inconsistent performance... jumping from 20 fps to 45 to 55 for a second back down to an all too common 38.

Curious to see if there was a dev console to adjust the FOV (which is hella low), I decided to einspect the .exe for command line parameters and discovered all these:
Code:
-MaxFramerate -disableAmbientSounds -disableFrequencyControl -output44k -output22k -output11k -enableHardwareMixing -AllDrivers -fpgaming -Benchmark -FrameRate -FrameTime -SkipConfig -Configure -version -EnableF12ScreenGrab -noRoll -NoShutdown -GotoGame -gamepad -cyberman2 -vertical -horizontal -spaceorb360 -keyboard -quickmouse -mouse -joystick -NoSound -ShowAllDemos

Trying them out in order, the first command line I made a shortcut and added " -MaxFramerate 120" (I have a 120hz monitor). And BOOM... the game runs at 62fps flat (an internal engine limitation). Turok legitimately is no longer shit in its PC release. The only side effect so far is that the game's head bob seems to have been timed to a frame step... so putting on the run modifer makes the head bob 2x as fast as when the framerate was really low. Other than that none of the enemies are sped up, none of gameplay is 2x the speed, none of that. I have yet to try out any of the other command lines beyond the benchmark. It would be great if GAF could help me figure out exactly what they all do. Perhaps this could be good for the speed running community.

The only problem right now is that capturing video of 60 fps gameplay is really troublesome. MSI afterburner causes the game to crawl and Fraps (oddly) messes with the game speed causing it to slow down and speed up. Nonetheless, here are some screens with the OSD running.

Proof of 60fps:

So much memories. I played that game so much when one gaming club in my city got few N64 consoles. Those were the years.

I had Turok and never got anywhere with it without using tons of cheats. Platforming in first person in heavy fog with limited lives is just... not fun. However, the fact that Turok always looks like he's drinking the keys he picks up is pretty great.

That 15 foot draw distance still cracks me the hell up.

hah yeah. At least they designed the gameplay around it :p

Wait, he isn't drinking those keys?

I played it way back at its release, but Turok is more fun and still challenging with invincibility. The design is that complex.

It's pretty terrible, but it's also masking the fact that the level geometry loops around on itself in inherently unrealistic ways. Like, there's probably another canyon directly above Turok's head at any given moment, which is obscured by the fog but would look hilarious without it.

LMFAO, so I'm not the only one who ever thought that!! I love Turok and Turok 2 so much. They used to legit scare me as a 5th grader playing them. Especially the last level of the first Turok, it had some tense and foreboding music playing. The huge mantis boss that chases Turok and Kool-Aid mans through all those walls. Those mecha-flesh creatures on wheels in the Primagen's light ship in part 2 were creepy as hell too.

I would buy a remaster of 1 and 2 in a heartbeat especially if it came out on the Wii U or PC.

I remember Acclaim, the original publisher, creating a magazine that just reviewed Acclaim games. They gave Turok Evolution 10/10. Everybody else rated it as a bad game.

I remember reading review in a local mag that was gushing all over the graphics and being stunned by those photorealistic dinosaurs in screenshots those 17 years ago.
Damn I am old.

I still remember the quote from Nintendo Power, where they said you could pause the game and count the T-Rex's individual teeth, lol.

I'm right there with you, sorta wish I had my old 64 with my turok cartridge sitting around so I could rock it back out.

We still refer to a thick fog as a "Turok like mist".

I really wish someone would do a remake of this.

Turok's animation when he falls off a cliff is hilarious, he's like a cartoon character. His scream makes it even funnier.

Well, it works with tim Lottes' CRT shader through GeDoSaTo (based Durante once again). What res did the original run at again on N64?

God, this game brings back so many memories. This was the first FPS I ever played and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
