PS4 version of Skullgirls confirmed to have have multiplayer crossplay w/ PS3 version

At first i was pissed this wasn't crossbuy and i have to buy the game again, but things like this soften the blow somewhat. Hopefully its a decent price

It's not they didn't do it, but that Sony told them no, they will not allow them to do it said the middleware Valve used with Portal 2 wasn't approved middleware for 3rd party companies and just a special one time thing with Valve. Ravidrath has mentioned before that they very much wanted to do it but ran into that big stop sign with Sony. It stopped being a possibility right then.

But who knows, maybe they'd reconsider if Lab Zero had some desire to try again. I gotta imagine they're getting tired of working on the same game for so long and want to try something new tho

Yeah, I guess someone at Sony changed their opinion on cross play with Steam again after some time. Or maybe there are technical reasons that makes things easier on PS4. Either way, I imagine that felt like a sharp elbow to the ribs for LZ.

Keep in mind everything I mentioned is in the context of quite some time ago, pre-PS4. Just a little after their IndieGoGo campaign.

I don't think Sony ever explicitly said "No" to crossplay between PC and PS3, it was more that the middleware software that would have allowed them to do it, whatever Portal 2 was using, wasn't approved for use for anyone other than Valve.

Regardless, PS4/PS3 crossplay is some fantastic news and will hopefully breathe some more life into the PS3 version of the game. Right now the PC version is the dominant community/platform of choice for the game.

Oh yeah, something about the middleware being a one time special thing right? My brain must have filtered all the tech stuff from my memory for something more dramatic

It's still in testing, but the intention is to have full cross-play between PS4/Vita/PS3. The whole Sony family can play together, and whatnot!

It'll be PS4/Vita cross-buy, but we're spending too much on the ports and new features to give it away free to everyone that bought the PS3 version.

It'll be out in Q2, and we'll release Robo-Fortune alongside the PS4 version to reinvigorate the PS3 side of the community, too.

We'd have to run our own servers, write our own networking libraries, etc. to make this possible. And we don't have the money or resources to do that.

Also, this is entirely speculative, but I would not be surprised if Capcom was going to offer some kind of premium MP experience to pay for their servers, etc.


Also...

There will be a PS4 theme for preordering. Really happy with the background art, and working on icons, music, etc. for the rest of it.

It's just not free if you already have the PS3 version - spending too much money on new stuff to justify that.
