People LOVE making up rules about Smash. Anybody who's been paying attention knows that any videogame character can get into Smash as long as Sakurai wants, no crazy rules involved.
As far as I'm concerned, they've been BS'ing us since the beginning when it comes to DLC. They always planned to sell characters as DLC. That doesn't mean anyone was cut out just to sell them for DLC (though I could imagine that Lucario got priority over Mewtwo for that reason), but it does mean anytime Sakurai or Nintendo said they weren't planning DLC, they were lying.
What proof do I have? None. But I have my suspicions. Reggie joked about bringing over Mother 3 last E3. If at E3 they announce that Mother 3 will come out with Lucas (especially if they call back to that joke), then that will cement it in my eyes. They planned it all from the beginning. Including cross-promoting Lucas DLC will Mother 3's western release. But that's just speculation until E3.
It seems more likely that Lucas will be released before E3 in early June. That way, the second wave of DLC can be revealed at E3.

When are you people gonna realise MOTHER 3 is never gonna come outside Japan? Just enjoy the fan-translation, it's probably for the best. Who knows what would get censored if NoA actually wanted it.
Wouldn't them just dropping Lucas out of nowhere actually be more of a sign that they have nothing planned for Mother and therefore nothing to save him for?
I'm grasping at straws because of the E3 joke. That's the only reason I'm entertaining the notion. It doesn't guarantee anything, and I'm probably wrong in that regard. But the timing feels suspicious to me personally. And by now we do know that they were planning more DLC in secret while claiming they had no plans aside from Mewtwo. But we'll see at E3.

Characters like Takamaru seem to be pretty popular without people who haven't actually played his original game. A playable Wonder Red could boost the awareness of The Wonderful 101 and increase the possibility of a sequel. But if it's mostly people who have played the game that want him in, that's a cap on his popularity.

I get why he could appeal to people who didn't play The Wonderful 101. What I'm wondering is if that's why people are actually voting.

As for the third party thing, at least Snake & Bayonetta are back on the table.
I bought Wonderful 101 day 1! Never played Murasame Castle but always been interested in it and Takamaru. Takamaru also has great music. Marth and Roy being in Smash introduced me to Fire Emblem and so I bought the GBA games.

When I first saw him I thought he was just a super hero until I read his biography on the game.
I thought Ness was just some random psychic japanese kid.
And I thought Samus was a guy.
And I was still angry that Jigglypuff was picked over pretty much any other Pokemon. (No offense, fans of the 'puff)
My knowledge of Nintendo was not nearly as vast as a kid back then...

Seriously. If I ever start spouting arbitrary rules for Smash characters somebody please tell me to STFU. I was a dumbass last year when I insisted that there was a pattern that Sakurai was following with Smash 4 newcomers where they were all characters from relevant and recent games, only for Duck Hunt to leak and make me hang my head in shame. lol

To be fair, he was the "retro pick". Much like Ice Climbers, Game n' Watch, and Pit. I know Pit's not so retro now after Uprising, but he certainly was during Brawl and they gave him a great modern look.
But agreed, trying to put rhyme and reason to Smash roster picks is a futile effort.

Just a heads up but there's an image going around social media sites like Twitter saying some characters will not appear as Smash DLC because they're already in game as assist trophies. That image comes from /v/ and not found in the Nintendo Direct or on the Smash site.

Initially, I liked the character Takamaru just because his design was simple (seriously, I love the character art on the Murasame Castle box) and very 80s animation. He also looked to have a full series behind himself meaning that unlike Lyn, he wouldn't be relegated to second fiddle or gone in a future title to cycle in a new headliner from the same franchise. Finally, a large portion of my support for him (and Lyn by extention) was because of how much I really wanted that particular kind of draw and sheathe/iaido swordsmanship to be a part of the roster.
My support for the character did lead me to getting the Virtual Console release of The Mysterious Murasame Castle however and I found myself more interested in him as a result.
A small amount of asses on the internet who did the ballot, according to the guy who made it.
It's interesting to say the least.
Why is everyone writing these stupid conditions in for characters being voted on? It feels like thinly veiled dissuasion when people add things like "cannot be removed from game to be reintroduced as DLC, sorry" under characters being voted on and discussed.
Don't they think that if Nintendo had a rule like that, they themselves would say something?
My wife asked if this was Bowser on speed. If Sakurai thinks anywhere near that in terms of relating him to Bowser, I wonder if he will ever seriously consider him. How did nintendo handle his persona in that baseball game?
Beyond that, looking at the poll, damn, if this doesn't say "bottom of the barrel" I don't know what does. I say this liking some of these characters.

I have been looking around different sites and while those two images might be BS, the graphs look close to what is actually happening. I am surprised that there is no Wonder Red in any of the Japanese polls.

Not suggesting it will ever make it over...but I don't think it would be censored if it did come over.
Nintendo don't too care too much about that shit lately.
I will say though, if Mother 3 came out today, it would come to America. If they ever remake any Mother games, its pretty likely they would be localized.

Yes? Smash should strive to best represent a series and its history.
Pokemon is a hard game to represent correctly in Smash because it basically resets itself every few years and has a huge cast of diverse, iconic characters created and maintained for 20 years.
Games like Pokemon and Fire Emblem that have game rosters like that are best represented with a wide scope of characters that represent all eras of them. It's why I don't really care how many Pokemon or Fire Emblem characters are in Smash because that's just how the series is best represented. They have large rosters in their own series.
Right now everything from 2000-2005 isn't represented at all. That's a fourth of the history of Pokemon.
With clones and the alt character system they can kind of cheat this (Pichu back with Plusle/Minun alts), but it still really does feel like Gold and Silver and Ruby and Sapphire are basically ignored in Smash. Gold and Silver has been running on the same music remix since Melee (that isn't even labeled as being from GS) and RS has 2 remixes. The 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th gens have way more music each.
The 3rd gen is especially hit hard by representation in Smash, never having a character and coming at a really awkward time between Melee and Brawl, so it never really got a fair shake in Smash. The 5th Gen might not get a character, but it gets tons of music, lots of Pokeball Pokemon and an entire stage. The second gen gets an unlabeled remix and third gen gets some old remixes and a cut character in the files of Brawl. 2nd and 3rd gen are the only two gens that have never have a stage in Smash Bros, either.
Yeah those are /v/, but they're definitely not official and the dude who made them isn't passing them off as official. He is just basing them off social media and certain smash threads.

If that's the case then Jibanyan is really lagging behind. You'd think there'd be far more Youkai Watch representation. Custom Robo looks like it's doing decently at least!
Still though, It's the bottom half of the US image that's being tossed around the internet and making people think that they're not to be voted for because they're already assists or they're third party so they have no chance. I mean we just got word from a NOA rep that any video game character is eligible for the ballot and they're listening to suggestions.

I love Gen 3, but it just simply missed the boat on playable characters alongside Gen 5. Proposing nobodies like Sceptile or Plusle/Minun does it no favors, and I've never felt confident about Blaziken's chances.

K. Rool is kool and all, but I honestly would prefer Dixie before him. Though I think his time will come.

I voted for K. Rool though since he'd add more variety.
I see K. Rool being a fusion of Wario, Bowser Jr, Donkey Kong, and King DeDeDe in terms of combat.
If he was added he would be the only heavy weight character introduced in Smash 4. So his inclusion is probably highly likely considering his fan demand for both US and Japan. Donkey Kong is one of NIntendo's most notable and very iconic IP, so to see only 2 reps in Smash Bros for his series compared to Fire Emblem that has 4, it sort of shows just how under-appreciated the series is in Smash.
I did vote once for Rool, but I still rather see Wonder Red, Inklings, and Ray MK3.
Hopefully Nintendo will be picking at least 4-5 characters from these ballots. And I wouldn't be too surprised to see a newcomer revealed at E3 either like the Inklings or Ridley. Mostly because I find it a little suspicious that they show off 2 old comers returning in form of DLC, no new characters, and then ask what newcomers we'd like to see introduced.
Still, I'm hoping for at least 5 :/ Odds are each poll will only have 1 character each considering how Sonic was the only one chosen during the last poll in Japan.

Plusle and Minun almost made the roster last game, presumably as replacements for Pichu like Toon Link did to Young Link.
And besides, they're best represented as alt costumes for Pichu or something, now that double characters can't work anymore.
Maybe he just didn't feel like using him? I don't know why K. Rool not being in the base game means he dislikes him.
