RTTP: F-Zero GX - This is only 480p?

On harder difficulty levels and late in the Story, you can't really win if you don't use your boost very liberally. You definitely can't spam it. But even on "expert" mode, I couldn't get 1st place without nearly destroying my ship.

The AI will boost even if you don't use yours on the harder modes.

They only do what they need to try to keep up/get ahead. So if you boostboostboost and try to break away (be it from everyone, in first, or from the middle of the pack) they will do the same.

If you boost less frequently, they will too.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that both this and Twilight Princess get the HD treatment before the Wii U is out the door. This first.

F Zero maybe, but I really think TP will get shoved out as a Wii Virtual Console title if anything.

How does this run in Dolphin?

Like a dream and looks AMAZING.

I played this in 3D on my 100 inch projector screen via Dolphin. It was quite something.

Hmm, I suppose I did something wrong, because it did run like a wet dream for a few minutes and then suddenly out of the blue turned to shit (frame-rate wise). I haven't touched the configurations of any sorts.

(FWIW, I have a 4670K + 280X)

The genius of the game is the boost meter which also serves as your HP. The hardest difficulty levels will require you to exhaust your meter as much as possible which leads to some very tense gameplay. The only way to replenish the boost meter is to drive over the healing pads strewn in key locations on each track or to take out your opponents. This leads to many different strategic considerations as to how aggressive you need be and when you need to time your boosts to get the most out of your meter.

Very few games, let alone racing games, balance risk/tension/reward quite like F-Zero GX but it never manages to feel unfair despite the high difficulty level. This game is amazing and hopefully Nintendo can (somehow) manage to top it some day.
Yup, this really sums up why I find GX so amazing. I've been an F-Zero fan since I got the first game in 1991, but GX was on a whole different level. I'm skeptical that it can ever be topped, but I'd love to see Nintendo try.

This and Outrun 2 / 2006 are the high-end of the genre, each one in its own way and both made by the top arcade teams at SEGA.

Still need to get this game. Been meaning to for years now but haven't really focused on my GC collection. Haven't played the game much but I love the other F-Zero games. I hope we will eventually get another game in the franchise.

Also this gif needs to be posted:

That lightning is unreal for a 12 year old game.

I think the main problem is that Amusement Vision is basically gone, its staff is now primarily working on Yakuza games. I doubt either Sega or Nintendo want to really want take a risk on a partnership on a series that doesn't sell.

And as for Nintendo making it internally, as their main projects take larger and larger staff (look at the credits for Skyward Sword to see how many studios are working on just one game in Nintendo) less and less staff is available to work on these riskier propositions.

It's just in a really, really awkward spot. People not buying GX was such a sore point for the series because they wanted it to be a huge pivot for the entire IP. There was an anime, GBA games, and an arcade game. None of it stuck, so I doubt anyone wants to revisit it right now.

Yep... great summary/analysis. I know it sounds sad, but I'm actually okay with never getting another F-Zero game. At least we got GX.

One of my favourite ever games. I still have the original Japanese GameCube version that came with the free arcade cards. The AX version had a card reader in Japan. I don't know what the cards do.

I tried running my Japanese version on my PAL Wii through home-brew but the fonts and HUD don't display. So I had to abandon that.

ProTip: Destroying the other racers with a spin attack gets you a small bit of health back.

Interesting. I've never played that one. Apparently it was on Steam but was removed :(

Outrun 2006 had a retail release for PC too. You can find it easily in bargain bins at any store. Or you can take look at second hand online places like eBay.

To this day, i still don't understand why they included a first person camera in GX, it's useless. In fact, i wouldn't like to play this game like how can be seen in that video. You can't see nothing, you can't react to what's happening around you accordingly, you don't have a proper view of what's coming next, there's 0% chance of you driving as good as you can. I mean... the developers wanted to give the player different cameras (something that was common with arcade racers), but some of them worked really bad in GX. I'm sure than there's a lot of games that are awesome with oculus, but GX doesn't seem like one of them.

One of the biggest mistakes of GX was the camera. The default camera (the one than most players used) was bad. Apart from that one, you could choose between 3 other cameras, and only one was good (the one that you could access by pressing down on the d-pad once). That one should have been the default one.

What do RTTP and LTTP actually mean?

Haven't played GX in ages, cannot remember if I've finished story mode, certainly not at all difficulties.

Late to the party, generally used when people are playing an old(er) game for the first time.

Return to the party, used when revisiting something.

I never really felt like there was a significant difference though, given the discussion is generally going to go down the same path regardless. Only difference is the OP's experience.

RTTP: Return To The Party - Going back to playing an older game you used to play before.

LTTP: Late To The Party - Going back and playing an older game that you've never played before.

I would have liked another 3 difficulty levels below the easiest one, and a story mode that I feel able to finish.

Phew, here I thought it was "Link to the Past"/"Rink to the Past"... :D

GX is still the best racing game of all time.

I really would love a new F-Zero but I'd take a HD remaster at this point. Add in a track editor for good measure and I'm golden.

Everything you said is the complete opposite of reality. Playing in first person in VR gives you much better ability to perceive what is coming up next.

Meh... I think the default camera placement is sublime.

If you plan to collect for GameCube in the future, I'd urge you to buy the few that are still reasonably priced right now (or try your luck at a yard sale in the future). Even if your current focus doesn't involve playing them right now; GameCube prices of (quite common) games are becoming more and more outrageous over the past years.

Yeah I know. I mostly have what I want luckily, but I'm missing some classics like this one. I'll have to make it my next game purchase! It's basically impossible to find GC titles in the wild where I'm at, especially the ones you actually want, so I'll have to use auction sites.

Meh... I think the default camera placement is sublime.

I wasn't simply giving my opinion there. If it was just my opinion, i would have said nothing. Literally everyone that is good enough at GX uses the camera that i mentioned. The consensus is that it's the best camera. I'm pretty sure that it has been proven that the default camera is bad. The one that i mentioned is clearly better. If you're used to the default one, it will take time to get used to the other one but, once you do, you'll never look back. Personally, i used the default camera for many years, and i though that it was perfectly fine. But, believe me, you can change.

In any case, you can ask anyone that you trust more than me like, for example, Madao. I'm sure that he'll tell you the same :p

edit:
Everything you said is the complete opposite of reality. Playing in first person in VR gives you much better ability to perceive what is coming up next.

lets make something clear. You may have a lot of experience with VR, but i don't, and i haven't played GX on a VR headset. So, i'm just making assumptions :p

I have experience with GX and i don't see how the ability of looking around on that first person camera could help. In fact, moving the head around (i.e. not looking in a straight line) would make things even worse. Furthermore, in a game like GX, there's no time for looking around and driving properly at the same time. You need a fix camera that gives you a broad view of the circuit at all times and that allows you to see your ship and the other ships, so you can concentrate on driving properly. First person camera is completely useless in GX.

"Everything you said is the complete opposite of reality"

i think that that's not true, because one of the things that i said was that "there's 0% chance of you driving as good as you can". In GX, it's imposible to get better times using the first person camera. The idea that someone would even try that is laughable.

What i'm saying is that, if for VR, i have to use GX first person camera, i don't see how that's going to make things easier.

Uhmmm stating it as fact? OK. I consider myself reasonably good at gx, only mission 5 on very hard not completed (was one time almost there, played perfectly, or so I thought, door was still open but the was suddenly closed, might be lag from my hdtv).

I think when you have mastered the controlls/layout of the courses, the default camera is the most balanced: good sense of speed and nice fov. The camera you mentioned gives a little bit of an overview: the sense of speed is not as apparent and the game is easier in that view because of the slightly more "bird-like" view. First person view is actually amazing if you've learned the courses (imo that means not once running into a wall while boosting extensively). The sense of speed is amazing in first persoon mode while boosting, it really makes you gasp for air. 2 presses down on the dpad is overview camera; way too easy because of the overview, and it feels much slower. Maybe people new to the game may prefer that one because it definitely makes things less challenging.

Can't really say I disagree. I pretty much just want GX but with modern AAA graphics, and online.

Have some more shots:

So good

This game made me see a doctor...

I played it in an uncomfortable position for WAY TOO LONG and I ended up having trouble breathing afterward...

This is easily the best racing game I ever had the chance to play. I completed everything and I played it a ridiculous amount of time to do so.

the last camera, the one that you access by pressing down on the d-pad two times, is the last one that i would recommend. It completely kills any sense of speed, so the game is not fun. The first person camera is awfull for precise driving (getting good times), but at least it can be actually fun :)
The camera that i mentioned in my precious post is the one that you access by pressing down on the d-pad just once (just to be sure that we are talking about the same one).

Look at any agdq GX videos on youtube, there you can see some of the best GX players. Look at Madao's youtube channel. Do you think that it's a causality that all of them are using the camera that i mentioned? or do think that they are using it because it is, in fact, the best one?

Again, anyone that doesn't trust me can ask Madao. I was just trying to help lol The first advice that i've given to people in the past is.. change the default camera!! I wouldn't have done that if i wasn't sure that it was a good advice ;p

To me there's 4 diferent cameras in GX. The first person camera and the further 3rd person camera are useless for different reasons. And the second 3rd person camera is better than the default camera so, in the end, there's 3 not recommendable cameras and just one option.

And, again, i did use the default camera for many years.

I kind of wonder whether non-F-Zero players would assume that this gif is being sped up. Not having played the game in years it takes me a second just to remember that this is actually how fast it plays.

the funny part is that the gif looks slow for me.

wut!? ;p In that gif you can see twin noritta going at 1300 km/h. That's really slow. Anyone can put that ship at 1800 km/h without effort. Just mash boost and pick a couple of dash plates haha

Its rare do we see games with such tight controls such as F-Zero GX.
Watching CGN do speed runs of the game is just mindblowing when you get to the real technical nitty gritty aspects of the game.

Yeah, I kinda feel similarly. I just hope the NX has it on its virtual console and that it can then be transferred to every future Nintendo console.

... are we asking for analog triggers on the next handled then?
Hah, no.

There go people assuming NX is a home console again.
*shrug* I'm not trying to argue that point. I'm just saying I want it on the virtual console in the future and I want it to be transferable / accessible on all future Nintendo consoles. Ideally.

I want to try this so bad. Too bad about that track pop-in. I'm sure that will be fixed with time though.

I hope we get an F-Zero GX clone built from the ground up for VR. It'd be so cool.

Radial G says hello! I missed out on backing this on Kickstarter, but I came across it a few months back because of another one of these F-Zero threads. Its on Early Access now on Steam and it supports gameplay without a VR headset too.

I'm sure Iwata himself read that thread and decided "GAF is content, cancel that F-Zero game we were working on!"

You're being overly optimistic with that scenario. Iwata & Miyamoto both think that the F-Zero game in Nintendo Land is good enough for the entire generation.

If that makes you cry inside, don't feel alone. That's exactly how I felt when they shit out a Jetski mini-game in Wii Sports Resort and said, "check off Wave Race for the next decade, this will do".

Just a few months ago was when I got to experience this game for the first time. It still feels ahead of it's time, as though it couldn't have come out back then, in a way that reminds me of Metroid Prime (for some reason).

Just a pure thrill ride, and very rewarding to master...the speed is just...its just so fast.
