At first it just seems like a less effective roller, but then I noticed it basically lets you run full-speed into enemy territory without getting bogged down in paint AND it doesn't have the roller's slower speed. I think there'll be some interesting strategies for it down the line.

Seems kind of like the "melee" equivalent of the charge rifle. You can essentially be the bannerman for the team and lay a strip of ink down, creating a quick inroad for your teammates to charge into an enemy zone and start covering an area more thoroughly. The higher run-speed and tighter turning radius mean you have an easier time weaving and evading enemy fire and I bet its equivalent of the roller's "splash" attack has a decent fan-spread to it. Probably not something you'd really want more than one member of your team to use in any given match but there's certainly utility there.

That might explain why we haven't seen it very often. Still needs polish.

Most likely. Its only been shown once in a Japanese video. If it was ready I think we'd have seen it more. Especially since they haven't shown a short clip of it in action on their twitter/tumblr like they have for all? of the other weapons.

Do we know what this is? Or what it says next to the + - in the bottom right.

Yameru for the +. Means to stop.

Can't do the - because my kanji sucks lol

The - is:
buki henkou / change weapon

I'm assuming it refers to the weapon set, not switching between your primary/secondary/tertiary weapon.

As well as providing a quick path at the beginning of a match the brush player be great at providing "spawn" points. Such as running to the other side of the map and have a painter (player whose role is to cover as much space as possible) jump to you. They wreck havoc while you go somewhere else, they jump to you, rinse and repeat.

Using the speed advantage to hit and run the other team sounds fun.

This statement makes no sense considering Nintendo does better in America than in Europe.

lol

Financially, yes, North America is a much larger and more profitable territory for Nintendo. But it's pretty widely accepted that, in regards to the way the business is run (and the way customers are treated), Nintendo of America has been getting worse while Nintendo of Europe has been getting better. So in way, you're right -- it doesn't make sense. If Splatoon ends up being budget-priced in other territories, but not in North America, it's another strike against an increasingly frustrating NoA.

It probably has a more powerful melee attack.

Got my pre-order in with T-Shirt and squid girl. Wanted the triple pack but they sold out in my size why Nintendo UK why? :(

Seriously, that's some shit. For roughly what we'll pay in the states, European customers will get three free amiibo. Or they can keep some money in their pockets and still get one amiibo or a tee shirt. I hope you Gaffers in Europe are enjoying your Nintendo paradise, because NoA has fallen off the wagon.

Also, that Edge cover is rad.

I think you got your math terribly wrong there.

First off, "European customers" don't get shit. The UK is not Europe. The Nintendo UK store only sells to customers with a UK address.

Secondly, nobody is getting "three free amiibo" with anything. What the hell. The three-pack with game+3 amiibo +shirt is £61.99 which is US$92. NINETY TWO US-DOLLARS. Amazon.com had your amiibo three-pack listed for $35. That's saving you $10 off of buying them separately. This means $35 (3-pack) + $60 (game) = $95 which is about £63.

$1 is not £1 ...

You should probably take a closer look before you call Europe a Nintendo paradise. Especially when it comes to pricing lol.

Take it easy, there. Yep, I made a stupid mistake; I glanced at the prices and was thinking in € exchange rate (which would be "roughly" equivalent of USD; current exchange rate is 1€=1.08$) rather than £. I know that the "UK is not Europe," please don't talk down to folks like that.

And yes, "paradise" is used as a lighthearted hyperbole, in reference to the fact that, of late, NoE seems to be handling its business far more smoothly than NoA, especially in terms of product distribution and availability. Even if limited to the UK, the fact that there's a well-presented online store that still has various Splatoon/amiibo/shirt packages available for pre-order is a pretty nice thing. That's what got me started on the subject -- didn't intend to derail the thread from Splatoon itself.

Summary of Edge article on Splatoon
- Main article has quotes from Amano/Sakaguchi and Nogami and talks about Edge playing the same demo build of the game the media played a few weeks back.
- The prototype had basic block characters and the ink painting mechanic. You were invisible when you were in your own ink. Amano/Sakaguchi added in jumping, hiding in ink, and the ability to shoot up and down. After that, though, they were confused about what they wanted to do with the game. They thought they might put a squid character on the box art but they needed a humanoid character to hold the guns. They thought a "squid human" wouldn't sell.
- Amano/Sakaguchi were scolded by Miyamoto in 2013 when doing the prototype who said "I don't understand. What do you want to do? There's no appeal to this game".
- They had an epiphany on Jan 6, 2014 that they could have you switch between a squid and human form and they rapidly got a bunch of ideas about how you swim faster in your own ink, you slow down in enemy ink and take damage, you can swim up walls, etc.
- Amano is a fan of "shooting games", but when he would invite friends to play with him they would get frustrated. He wants to make a game that is different that people who aren't fans of traditional shooters can play.
- Edge magazine says "Splatoon has no voice chat and never will". Amano says: "This is coming from personal experience. When I played online games, I didn't like the negativity I got and people telling me 'You're crap. Go away'. So we wanted to focus on the positive aspects of online gaming". Amano says he's not saying that chat in an online game can't contribute to fun but they want to grab new players.
- Confirms that there are some Splat Zone maps with more than one boxed-off area to capture. If you claim all the territories your timer starts to count down, but if your opponent captures one the timer stops.
- The same primary weapon can come in a variation with the different sub/special weapon
- Can start firing after a super jump right before you land
- More online modes besides Turf War/Splat Zones
- One respawn point per team, but you're invulnerable while on it to discourage campers.
- A lot of the designers on the team are in their 30s, so the 90s style with street fashion and trainers is a big inspiration for the outfits
- Trick to balancing the weapons according to Sakaguchi is to make people want a little more ("if only it could shoot a little farther/shoot faster"). They aren't going out trying to make the strongest weapon in the game.
- 15 singleplayer challenges and "5 rare pieces of gear" for each of the 3 Amiibos
- Q&A with Katsuya Eguchi. Thinks Splatoon IP has huge potential and the characters could appear in different types of games. Challenge of HD development with large teams is that team members have different skill/experience levels and it is important that work isn't unnecessarily duplicated. Trying to do new things to take opinions of younger team members into account even at the beginning of a project and not just senior staff. It is important to have things for Splatoon that will draw attention to the game after release (basically hints at content
updates/DLC).
---
A few other notes:
- A note mentions that one of the pairs of shoes available changes color to match the Inkling you've created
- The article mentions one of the challenges for the girl inlking Amiibo might be completing a stage in a certain time limit
- Nintendo is testing the game internally and there are frequent "quarrels" between team members discussing which weapon is stronger in certain situations
- They spent two hours talking about how long it should take the grenades to explode
- Amano and Sakaguchi have been been thinking about the game so much that they've been dreaming about it. Sakaguchi actually dreamed that he asked one of the programmers on the team to come up with something and the programmer in his dream implemented it and showed it to Sakaguchi. Sakaguchi loved the idea. He had that programmer (in real life) put it in the game the next day!

How about only with friends then?

I was hoping for conformation of this.

Wait, there are 15 single player challenges locked behind amiibo? That ain't cool.

They better be tiny bonuses and not things that belong in the single player campaign.

Hmmm. I'm not a fan of voice chat, but it'd be nice with friends.

Excellent. Must have been a misquote when we had news months ago Turf Wars was the only mode.

- 15 singleplayer challenges and "5 rare pieces of gear" for each of the 3 Amiibos

Single player challenges are extra to the main mission? Good news. Between different multiplayer modes, single player, and challenges, this is a meaty game.

I do wonder what the challenges entail?
-covering certain area in under a time limit?
-missions against CPU octo's with specific weapons, limitations, etc?

Wait, there are 15 single player challenges locked behind amiibo? That ain't cool.

I interpreted it as "- 15 singleplayer challenges AND "5 rare pieces of gear" for each of the 3 Amiibos [through unlockable amiibos challenges]". As in, the game has 15 before the amiibo challenges. I'm buying the amiibo's anyways.

Let me add that Edge made the comment that "Splatoon has no voice chat and never will", not Amano. I'll edit my post to reflect that.

Wow, didn't think the no voice chat thing was done for a more personal reason.

I doubt they would belong in the single-player campaign. It probably is like a challenge mode in games where you do some things within a set time limit or something similar to NSMBU's Challenge Mode.

They would probably be listed as separate points if it were to be interpreted that way.

Dammit I'm too skint to get a Wii U any time soon but I want the Squid Amiibo and NZ isn't doing the triple pack. Anyone know if it's possible to use US Amiibo with NZ tech and if so which US retailers ship to NZ?

The Amiibo are the same regardless of region. Only the packaging they come in is a bit different. So a squid from anywhere in the world is the exact same. Considering the squid is being sold individually in Japan, importing one from there (or finding someone in NZ that is selling Japanese Amiibo) is probably your best/easiest bet.

It's 15 singleplayer challenges per Amiibo. The Treehouse direct showed one (playing one of the levels with a roller instead of the default gun)

3L6SxTKl.jpg

This is what you get when you go up to the Amiibo in the plaza (after you've tapped one to the system).

15 challenges... looks like if you beat a set of 3 you get a piece of gear that unlocks in the yellow box on the right

=/

45 challenges locked behind amiibos then. I was worried amiibo-locked content would eventually go overboard like this.

Hype, ty. I literally just realized there's a dedicated Amiibo thread so the rest of my stupid questions are going there.

They're just single player levels you can already play but with different weapons.

This. They aren't new levels. Instead the challenge is simple to beat existing levels with a different weapon provided. It's actually a smart way to handle this. They really just are bonus challenges with the ability to unlock an outfit and weapon.

It probably be more like purple coin missions in Mario Galaxy.
They already showed that you'll be given another weapon to complete the level with. Whether or not we see other types of challenges is unknown but I hope they make any extra challenges (time trials, coin collecting, etc) available to everyone. Giving the amiibo value while not making it feel necessary to own.

Ridiculous excuse. This doesn't excuse not at the very least having it for playing with registered friends, which is what people actually want it for, since it's a team-based game.

The voice chat thing is a bluff; they're leaving it out because it requires work they can't/don't have time to do, and because they know they can deliver it later to generate renewed interest in the game post-launch, all under the guise of responding to fan feedback or whatever.
