Ava won, Boyd lost, and he gets to live wirhout knowing something quite important. That's very devilish, truth being told. And he doesn't deserve that knowledge at all. Let him carry on with his delusions and no longer torment her or his offspring.
Anyone else a little disappointed Winona and Raylan didn't make it as a couple? I'm a sucker for romantic endings.
The point that has been made over and over during the series and the reason this finale (and last line) works, is because Raylan and Boyd are inherently similar. They're both outlaws, don't play nice with others, and have something of a mean streak ("beats angry." )
If Raylan and Winona had suddenly worked as a regular couple, that would have been a fundamental breach in his core characterization. The same way, Raylan knows why Ava doesn't want Boyd to know: because he, much like Raylan, would move the world to try, try, try, and fail, because they're from the same mold, just at different sides of the line.
That interview that linked a good few pages ago sheds some light on this. Both actors are kind of frustrated with movies having no story. Events occur, but there's nothing underneath. So this show ending with a story that actually amounts to something is a big deal for both of them, but Olyphant as producer in particular.

aside from not noticing the hat (thanks Bobby), I also missed that Boone specifically went for a head-shot. Speaking of characterization: this is what you want. A guy who knows damn well he shouldn't, but can't help himself to do it anyway (and would have succeeded, if not for the risk).
That pathetic bandage right after made me laugh though. Not even a goddamn scratch.
