Star Ocean 5 screens (Now in "HD"!)

Dear god, now I'm worried for this game. You know those "anime girl" masks they have in real life? That's what I feel like I'm looking at. The style and the tech are clashing SO hard. They need to take stock of what SO4 was so that they can purposefully run hard in the other direction.

Here's a better shot of the lead girl's face. I think this game is going to look a lot better in motion than it will in screens.

Disregarding the actual model, why is it ignoring the shadow? Is she emmissive?

Always liked Willbell from the Atelier Characters.

The green hair woman gives the same vibe

The Pink haired girl looks creepy and uncanny, like these real life anime masks And the real life mask has more Emotions!
Atelier character models are so much better than any other anime-style JRPG characters it's not even funny. And that's on PS3.

that is a tri-ace star-ocean game we are talking about, lol

dialogue will be terrible and gameplay will be fantastic
The dialogue will definitely be terrible. There's no way around that. :p

Did you not like the battle system of SO4? I found it had the best battles in the series personally and the main reason why I kept playing. (certainly wasn't playing for the story or characters...)

I dont remember SO3 being too cringey in the talking department. No more than your typical JRPG anyway. I might just have some find nostalgia about it, though.

Honestly I only played about 3-5 hours into SO4 a couple years ago. The only details that remained in my memory are the characters. the names. the creepy faces. the voices. the Lymle...
So it's like Final Fantasy then. Tech and Magic. Shame. Would have been nice to see a true sci-fi RPG. Something a bit different now-a-days.

Go play Deus Ex.

I like the style. Not every game needs to look the same. I am kind of pumped for this, even though I made the mistake of buying this for the 360 last time and never finished it since it red ringed and lost my data way deep into the game. Maybe I will see if I can pick up the PS3 version. and try again.

Quite like this characters design ...but would like a better shot before I can say so for sure.

See I think Reimi's face is much better. Yes it was awful under animation (or lack thereof), but as a still it looks like an actually proportioned face

I can def agree with that.

Yeah, GUST is really great at character models. I can't wait to see what they do on PS4.

I love this. I was really hoping that as tech evolved we wouldn't lose the anime-centric JRPG style. I love FFXV and all (and yes, I see the influence there) but I like the giant eyed, pink haired, lack of understanding of the human anatomy.

I feel weird but...I like the faces. They're not great, but they're not wrecking the aesthetic for me like I felt another game's faces has done. It feels pretty well meshed together. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

we all should be happy that there is another console jrpg from tri-ace.

this and xenobladeX could be very well the last conservative (non-atlus) non-loli big console jrpgs we will be able to play.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
she still looks pretty derpy here. could be part of her character though so will withhold more judgement until we get more info lol

She's childish and absent minded according to the character descriptions in famitsu, so yes, she is supposed to be kinda durrr.

But the model is standard anime fair. Nobody should be surprised whatsoever for Star Ocean that the models are pure anime. Don't like anime? your in the wrong franchise

I love anime, but I think the character models in these screenshots are mediocre artistically. And some of the character designs are just ridiculous.

Edit:
I think the main issue is trying to model too much with polygonal detail in the faces of anime-style characters. I've never seen that go well.

Bad character design 101: Star Ocean and Xenobable.

Is that supposed to be attractive? No wonder JRPGs are fading away.

Never mention Xenoblade in the same sentence as Star Ocean 4.
Their models and character design are far more interesting than the ugly pander-fest of the latter.

I wish we would get more cell shaded games if they are going with the anime look. Tales of Vesperia looked so great and it could be much better done today... Naruto games do it well too.

Looks good! Main girl's face looks strange in stills, but I think she'll look better in motion.

I honestly prefer clean, crisp graphics over detail. Type-0 had a lot of issues with the graphics, but the updated characters looked great for being simple because they were so clean.

I likey. I'm much less critical of everything about this game so far because I'm just happy to be getting it at all. If I am being critical though, I don't see anything that bugs me too much. MC looks good, the rest look alright. Would have to see it in motion.

Purple-haired girl's face is super creepy while the green-haired girl's entire character design looks awful.
