Star Ocean 5 screens (Now in "HD"!)

I'm very hesitant at this game. This looks like another SO4 shit show. Great combat, and everything else will be mediocre AT BEST.

Ugh.

Tri-Ace did such a great job with Resonance of Fate! I was hoping with this we'd see more of that come over in terms of characters and art style choices.

Not sold on this by a long mile.

Star Ocean: The Second Story still stands as their best game back on PS1. How can they not get back on that level with this series? Valkyrie Profile and Resonance also are fantastic IP's from Tri-Ace. Someone at that studio needs to get axed ...

My exact sentiments

Hey look I made a thing:
w3aKeqi.jpg

Still anime like crazy, but with less....bizarre proportioning and 'alien' features.
I widened the head for one (it's super narrow otherwise), made the eyes a little smaller and less round, added a small nose so she doesn't look like a thumb.

Yeah I'm def not one of those. So whynotboth.gif for the win.

The edit looks great as a 2D picture, but I'm not sure the nose would look good at every angle on a real-time 3D model.

To be honest, the biggest issue is that the eyes are too far apart. Gives an 'alien' look. Your edit fixes that by quite a lot.

As someone who has dabbled in anime style 3d modeling, I can say it's actually pretty hard to get right. It can look great from one angle but the illusion starts to break at certain angles and you're left with an unholy mess.

I'm glad they're trying the anime aesthetic only because we could use more games that go for NPR (non photorealistic rendering) but in this case they need a lot more work on their shaders and they need to tweak the models some more. It certainly isn't a bad start though.

The edited nose looks super bad.

Anyway, I'd wait until we see how she animates before saying if she looks good or not... That design will be perfectly fine if she has more facial expressions than SO4's cast.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
The real question is: will this game be at E3 and how far apart will the localization be?

I'm glad Tri-ace stuck to more realistic traditional environments. Their sci-fi town designs were ugly as sin in SO4.

YES. Oh man, I think cartoons and anime in general and absolutely crazy to adapt into 3D sometimes. Hell, I'm impressed anime figures look as good as they do half the time, since artwork doesn't always follow the same "rules" as real life does it can be harder to adapt.

Looking at all the crazy stuff Arc System Works did for GGXrd makes me wonder how they don't go nuts doing that for multiple characters.

I just want to say: I think Leanne from RoF is absolutely divine looking and totally works in that anime/realism hybrid...but that could be me having a weird girl-crush on her

All that said, I feel like tri-Ace really doesn't get enough love for their graphics (faces and occasionally awkward designs aside). Environment art, monsters, and generally even character movements are pretty damn spectacular looking.

Pussy Witch has convinced me this series probably just isn't for me anymore.

Luckily both her and "the face" are Symbologists so if they follow SO tradition they'll be fairly useless and warm the bench.

Nah you're right Leanne works well also everyone has a girl-crush on her. <3 I wonder if they can do an RoF boss cameo for post-game content like they did with Freya in 3.

Your faithlessness will be your downfall. I'm sure they'll get magic right this time! Believe in their integrity, kay?

Aesthetics are not an insignificant part of the experience.

Well, fortunately I've never let aesthetics dampen my enjoyment of good gameplay.

Yeah, their programmer Gotanda keeps up to date with all of the tech advancements. They did awesome stuff on the ps2. VP2 is still easily one of the best looking ps2 games, art and tech-wise. I really like their old village town designs so I'm glad they're going for that in SO5 over futuristic environments. Radiata Stories, Star Ocean 3, Valkyrie Profile 2 all had 60fps, 16:9 aspect and 480p with VP2 also supporting 1080i.

Yeah I really appreciated that too since it's widescreen options make SO3 better to emulate than others since the UI actually matches up well + the progressive mode make the game crystal clear when rendering it.

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
SO4 was the period where certain parts of game development still thought bloom was a good substitute for actual lighting. Its literally everywhere in Star Ocean 4, you can't even look 5 feet in front of you without getting blinded in a lot of areas

The game looks almost like some Skyrim anime mod, almost :p

Im expecting hot glue guns to come out for the plastic at any moment now

Amen.

Skyward Sword Zelda says otherwise :)

Lol no its not even anywhere the same quality

Honestly the edit is pretty ugly too

I just realised that in this illustration

the girl on the top right looks like the Runemaster class from Etrian Odyssey :O

EDIT: Okay, so apparently I can't quote images properly. Do I need to re-upload those and then quote?

She kinda looks like a dolphin

I think you may need some refreshing the quality of SO3's character designs.

Cliff, Nel and Label were all had good personalities anyway so was a major step up from 4.

Brown hair has a duck face, but its not too weird. Blue girls lips are small as hell, Blondie looks funny.
Looks hype as hell. Yes, the character design is questionable, but frankly as a lifelong dedicated save-the-world console JRPG fan I'm not ashamed to admit I've lowered my standards considerably in the past decade. I've had to; there isn't much that calls out to me.

Star Ocean 5 is calling out to me. Maybe it wouldn't have in 2001 (well, in 2001 I'd be asking how they managed to make Spirits Within into a game, but you know what I mean) but in 2015? Yes please, I'll take three.

Also, dat effing skybox. Look at those clouds. Look at them.

Why dont you play something good like Xenoblade or Megami Tensei? Or the myriad of amazing rpgs that have been released on the DS,PSP,3DS,Vita?

Xenoblade was OK, not the greatest RPG.

I extremly dislike the trend of portable jrpgs. I like them on a large screen as that's how i grew up with them. They don't need to have the most amazing graphics, but I don't like squinting down at my portable for 80+ hours.

Im too thirsty for sweet jrpg action on a big screen. That said, I love the SO series, even 4 since everyone loves to hate it for decent reasons, and I'm now buying a PS4 specifically for 5.

Character models look miles apart from the actual designs. I thought the 2D designs would be something designed by artist has similar style like Houden Eizou (his works are awesome btw).

They could do some simple adjustment to nose/mouth and the character would look much better

That looks good.

I was excited for Symbology in SO4 and they did me so dirty. Never again.

The sad thing is that symbology would have been fine if the stats were adjusted a bit. Especially Lymle. She's really, really fast for a caster, and Cerberus' skills are really good. The damage just wasn't there. I forget about Tittyelf, I never really used her. Sarah, while being a healbot, had good stunlock in... Hurricane?

In SO3 magic was just reduced to thunder flare/explosion/laser beams for the stunlocking. Magic in SO2 was just the chance to take a breather, lol.

This is basically the first heavily anime game on next gen consoles right (excluding FFXV I guess)? Obviously this is somewhat low budget but it's still looking pretty good I think.

Those shots of SO4 are bullshots. There are one or two that aren't, and you can tell because there is lots of aliasing.

This is the last edit, I swear!

The game really does have some good looking environments though. I just hope we get to see them at a time of day that isn't yellow.

I know lots of people around here have an overblown hatred for 'piss filters', but giving a scene a warmer color temperature isn't a bad thing. The pre-edit here looks perfectly fine.

Yeah I don't really get some of these tiny nitpicks. Also I have no qualms with the girl's face. I think it looks adorable.

These SO characters look a lot better than Xenoblade X imo.

Lol no. The face in Xenoblade actually arent that bad. People just went nuts over the MC having a funny looking half dazed stare and people not liking Lynlee's eye shading.

i personally think her face is a little too pudgy but nobody mentions that ever.

Ugh, the game's environments look fantastic but those character designs are horrific. Especially the ridiculous looking female party members. One looks like some shit printed on a Japanese body pillow and the other looks like she works at a strip club.

I'm all for thinking FF XV could use a little gender diversity in its main party, but considering the downright awful designs of female party members (not to mention the equally horrible writing), maybe an all-male party isn't so bad.
