You know, that Nanako commercial might be the one time we've actually seen extended footage of a P4D character actually dancing in rhythm to a single song.

Is that bad?

Bad? Uh, I dunno. What do you mean?

If you mean if it's a possible indication of the characters' dance choreographies to songs or something, well, I don't really think it says much about it. Atlus Japan's trailers tend to lean more on story and flash than gameplay, and that was the same for P4AU and PQ.

I meant it in the context of seeing so little raw, extended gameplay.

Ah, so yeah, that's not something to worry about from that. Gameplay is usually secondary to the Japan side's promotional videos. You can look back at the Persona Q and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax trailers, and it'll mostly highlight story, dialogue and anime cutscenes, with some flashy gameplay mixed at the end. Actually, the same kind of goes for the Persona 5 trailer, if you think about it.

Didn't she dance like this during the first trailer?

Watch it again. Nanako is not dancing in rhythm throughout the Junes song in that one, and there are several cuts mixed in it.

Ok one more quick one: should I always keep Orpheus with me?
mostly because I saw his "real form" in the beginning cutscene when I first summoned him.

Or is it like Persona 4 where his real form comes out towards the end of the game?

There's really no reason to keep Orpheus around past the beginning. He's a terrible Persona, with poor stats, abilities, and two weaknesses. The only reason to hang onto him is so you can do the Cadenza fusion ability.

Anyone here getting DeSu Record Breaker? Its coming out fairly soon? I often get the impression that regulars here only play persona and nothing much else :D

Have you checked the thread's title? Maybe that's why.

I'm in Europe, so I'll have to wait.

"Persona Community Thread." Hmm, yes, I wonder why we primarily talk about Persona. :p

I'm not terribly interested in Break Record myself. I haven't played DeSu 2 tho, so I guess have more interest in it than say... Overclocked. *shrugs*

I think Persona 5 already looks pretty different from its predecessors, considering that they could have gone a safer more standard route instead of having its themes and aesthetic diverge pretty significantly, but I see what you mean.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while:

These are what I've been considering:

- The protagonist's dual nature between docile looking student and brash thief.
- One of the game's slogans being "What awaits us? Will it be glory? Or will it be destruction?", with "Glory" being written in clean white, while "Destruction" is a ruptured red text.
- Hashino's favorite 2014 game being inFamous: Second Son because of its morality system that engaged the player.

The dichotomy motif makes me think of a Shin Megami Tensei style "Chaos" and "Law" split. It's something I consider more when I think back to how the last new, solo P Studio game—Catherine—had a morality mechanic. I wonder if Persona 5 could have something like it, and if it could have a bearing on the Cooperation system.
I feel like some sort of alignment system based on who you "Cooperate" with, maybe similar to Desu2, is very likely tbh. Having multiple ending that way would be more interesting and have more replay value than simply a good, bad, or true ending.

I'm def getting. I placed Overclocked a few years ago and loved it (despite being reaaaally turned off by the art work...). I'm glad I sucked it up and got it anyway.

I'll get Record Breaker when it drops to $20, just like I did Overclocked. They are out of their damn minds if they expect me to pay $50 for it. It's not half the game Soul Hackers is.

This is debatable, right? I mean, Soul Hackers was virtually a straight port. Record Breaker has a whole new campaign.

I'm talking about the game itself. Soul Hackers did add new dungeons and (fully voiced) optional bosses as well. SH is also a legit classic, DS2 wasn't even as good as DS1.

Interesting, I kept thinking Sly Cooper when I saw the reveal, but now that you mention Infamous I could definitely see this having a morality system too.

That's pretty debatable, while DeSu1 had a good story, it still suffered in the gameplay department as it felt like there were some good ideas, but the execution wasn't all that great in the grand scheme of things and needed a sequel to refine the mechanics. And I thought DeSu2 some ways surpassed it (better gameplay, more useful racial skills, FATE System, and a lot more interesting battles.), and in some ways I thought the story was actually really good and kept me engaged while playing it.

As for Soul Hackers, I think it's just okay. The Cyberpunk setting is the best aspect of it, reminded me of stuff like The X Files, So Weird, and Blade Runner and I think it took a very interesting look at the internet and some of it's thing it talks about in relation to that are still pretty relevant to us even now over 18 years later. Along with having with good character designs that complimented the setting. The gameplay on the other hand is a mixed bag, there's some really good stuff like demon negotiation, battles, and interchangable cards you can put into your GUMP that makes it feel more like your hacking the game to your advantage. And then there's some really bad stuff about it, like the MC being basically useless for the most part as he has no magic to speak of, you don't earn money in battle only MAG and the only way to get any money in the game is either by selling stuff or conventing MAG into cash at OEA. And the story while good, the ending felt underwhelming to me like after you defeat the final boss, it felt like...that's it. It's a good game, but I don't think I would call it a classic.

I get the feeling my enjoyment of P4 compared to P3 is proportional to how good each game's December is.

Either way, October-through-December is the realest part of them both. If P1 were to use a calender system, Maki's retreat into the forest and Nanjo's verbal beat down would've been in the October-December section.

Famitsu, Dengeki and 4Gamer posted new Persona 4: Dancing All Night previews. I put a bunch of work into this one, so I'll shamelessly plug the Persona Central post if anyone wants to see all of the info in one place.

Bunch of new info in those, and I've gotten a better understanding of the game's structure. Notably:

- As I thought, a song only has a single available character for it: the "main character."
- Partners can be chosen from any other character, with unique dialogue and choreography depending on the combinations. However—and I'm not totally clear on this part—I believe partners only come into the fray once "Fever" mode is attained, which would explain why duet segments have been called "Community Fever." This would also make sense since it's hard to imagine there'd be unique choreography and dialogue for each unique character pairings throughout a full song.

So if main dancers can't be changed, then wonder what the "right" option on that setup screen does. I don't think any customisation besides costumes for the main dancer is mentioned in any of those.

I'm not sure about the Fever thing. It seems like that might be the case, but then some of the pair screens don't look to be in Fever mode.

They've fucked up.

Being able to customise characters looses value when you can't invest into your favourite character and use them when you want.

As someone who doesn't care about that or vanilla dance styles that embodies any model, I much prefer the route they took of actually putting a lot of thought into their motion capture and model animations for unique songs, evoking the personality of each character.

That's a fair opinion.

And at the end of the day i'm there for the music and the button prompts. It was just a feature that I was heavily interested in that I will now probably dismiss altogether.

I can always hope that my favourite songs tie with my favourite character...

Man, the character models still look so good to me! Now I wanna see other Persona characters with those models. *0* And Nanako looks precious as always.

Man, this looks so good. My goal is to clear every single song on ALL NIGHT difficulty with a King Crazy rating and all partner combinations.

First I have heard of touch screen controls for the main inputs, that sounds...interesting, as an option at least. Since the inputs are always at the edge of the screen I can see how that would work.

I also thought I remembered some songs were going to be completely duets, though maybe I'm not remembering correctly. Lack of character swapping is a bit of a bummer, though I can understand why they did it that way. There goes my dream of making Yukiko dance in Kanji's style, oh well.

I guess it depends on just how they want to adjust the choreography for the partners. We've got Kanji doing this in a song with Yukiko as the main character:
Nanako-3.jpg
I'm fine with what they've done since it wouldn't be as dissonant as something like Yukiko doing a full Kanji routine, but maybe they could still have a partner adopt another character's dance style in portions of a dance for humor or synchronicity.

I'm interested what will happen when Yu dances with Marie, I guess someone has to come up with some kind of tsundere dialogue.

In true Tsun fashion Marie doesn't dance. She just stands in the corner of the room and crosses her arm while frowning and complaining about how all the songs are dumb and not her style.

If you can survive from November 2013 to February 2015, then I'm sure you can survive the next few months. It's only been 2 months since the February trailer after all :p

Agreed.

This is a terrible decision.

Bye bye DLC revenue.

But when the ways they evoke the character are so shallow, does it actually matter? Like I said before, it's all J pop dancing with small flourishes unique to a character. Take out the occasional kicks Chie does and her dance could be anyone's.

Unless of course the DLC is the other characters' dance routines for songs you already have...

That would be awful, but there's no chance of that anyway.

I'm really soured on this. It will make me a lot less likely to play certain songs. Nanako's tracks? Never gonna get played. Kanamin's? NOPE.

I mean, people talk about characters being forced on you in previous games, I think DAN takes the cake now.

I... kind of don't see the problem for this? Not for me anyway. I was never one to change characters around that much in the project Diva games. Though the fact that they create special videos for each song and have the characters sing them does deter me from doing that. Not sure if DAN will have the same specificity for each song.
