Dementium: The Ward Was Pitched to Konami as a Silent Hill DS Game

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has revealed that Dementium: The Ward was pitched to Konami as a possible Silent Hill DS game.

---

However, the meeting with Konami didn't go too well for Watsham and Renegade Kid. "They were kind enough to meet with us, but the meeting only lasted a few minutes and ended with their [representative] saying they wouldn't let a team like us handle the Silent Hill license."

---

Years later, Renegade Kid reached out to Konami again about a Silent Hill DS project, this time pitching third-person experiment shots utilizing the Dementium II engine. Watsham shared the images with IGN (seen below), but Konami once again said no.

"But we'll let a no-name eastern europe studio create the next main entry of the franchise"

The Dementium games were good for what they were, I did spot the Silent Hill influence in a few areas. That said, what came to be I don't think would be a good Silent Hill game, though maybe it'd go in a different direction if it was Silent Hill.

It sounds like they cold-approached Konami about it? That was gutsy of Jools, and nice of Konami to take the time to meet with them instead of just shrugging them off.

Dementium was fun but a bit bare bones and looked like a modest N64 game.

if what Konami had in mind was Origins, which happened on PSP, then I understand Konami's stance, as unpopular as they may now be.

To be fair, Downpour wasn't that bad. I quite liked it, though the stutter annoyed me on PS3. Going back to room 302 was a blast too....

It wasn't really a comment on the quality of the game, but rather that Konami gave the mian entry of one of their bigger franchises to a studio that didn't have a notorious game or even similar on their backs.

Rejecting Renegade Kid to work on a DS spin-off is weird.

(without even entering in the realm of the awful mobile games...)

The Dementium games are great. They are basically Silent Hill with heavy Metroid aesthetics.

Isn't there an HD collection coming to the WiiU?

Also, Konami said RK didn't deserve Silent Hill?!? The last THREE Dev teams they threw Silent Hill at never worked on anything CLOSE to survival horror, while Renegade Kid did the highly unappreciated Moon DS games.

What a load.

Downpour seriously started out well. It had a good atmosphere and sucked you right into the story. The protagonist was one of the few(only?) in the franchise that actively freaked out when he saw Silent Hill stuff happening. He absolutely didn't go with the flow, he always went "What the HELL is going on?" which made for some nice character in his part. It also had some pretty cool elements throughout. The game design was pretty competent too. That said, it had one major problem:

It wasn't scary and the plot kinda sucked.

Which is kind of a major problem for that type of game. It started out well so I kept waiting for it to creep me out and it just...didn't. The monster design probably contributed to that. I did enjoy some things from that game though.

The amusement park ride, cheesy as it might have been, was the most memorable part of the game for me. It was just a set piece but I think it was done really well. I just wish that led into a boss fight or something.

Overall though, yeah. I would say it's not a terrible game, it's just not a very good one. WAY better than Homecoming though.

Yet they were more than happy to let WayForward turn out that stinker known as Book of Memories. Shameful.
