The man who created Supernatural has turned his attention to a superhero.

Eric Kripke’s Amped, a drama that follows a neurotic man who takes a pill and becomes incredibly strong and powerful, is one of several projects on USA Network‘s 2015-2016 development slate.

Kripke will pen both the Vertigo comic book on which Amped is based and the series itself, which he’ll also executive-produce.

Other potential series the cable channel announced Tuesday include:

* The Tap, a 1969-set spy thriller set at Yale University.

* Mythos, a “serialized adventure” that follows a man whose wife goes missing, leading him to find out that everything we consider a myth is actually true — and that that knowledge is guarded by two opposing groups.

* AWOL, about an ex-military operative who becomes a criminal in Los Angeles.

* Swamplandia!, based on Karen Russell’s novel about a family that owns an alligator-wrestling theme park in Florida. (HBO was developing a version of this but it never made it to series)

* Cooley & the Tank, a behind-the-scenes drama about a fictional 1981 detective show.

* Paradise Pictures, a drama set in 1940s Hollywood at the end of the studio system. (in my veins!)

* Starchitects, a serialized workplace drama set at an elite architecture firm in Los Angeles.

* Mile High, about two best friends who cash in on the legalization of marijuana in Colorado.

* The Recessionistas, a limited series about rich Manhattan women and their finance-firm husbands after the 2008 stock market collapse.

* The Rock Untitled Project, an unscripted series executive-produced by charismatic WWE/action movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

The projects are in addition to the network’s previously announced Shooter, Falling Water and Queen of the South.

- Deadline: Afghanistan Drama Pilot ‘White City’ Not Going Forward At AMC
AMC has passed on White City, its geopolitical drama pilot directed and executive produced by Stephen Gaghan. Focused on Western diplomats and journalists living in Afghanistan, the show came from co-writers/co-executive producers Nick McDonell, a novelist and journalist who has covered Iraq and Afghanistan for Time, and John Dempsey, former long-time resident of Kabul and senior advisor on Afghanistan to the late US diplomat, Richard C. Holbrooke. Executive producers were Chris Mundy (Low Winter Sun) and former Viacom CEO Tom Freston, a former resident of Afghanistan, currently an advisor to VICE and MOBY Group, an Afghan media corporation.

Also, it's very mysterious, but apparently Ed Brubaker (writer of comics like Criminal, Incognito, Sleeper, Velvet, The Fade Out, various DC/Marvel titles) said at WonderCon that he's been working with HBO on something, but couldn't say more. Not even a hint.

The Sparrow
Writer and Executive Producer: Michael Perry
Based on Mary Doria Russell’s acclaimed science-fiction epic, “The Sparrow” tells the story of a Jesuit-led mission to make first contact with an alien race.

Looks like none of these will be moving forward.

This was one of their least interesting sounding projects, so I can't say I'm upset.

None of these really jump out at me, although I can conceive of Deliver Us from Evil being a good show idea. Vague shades of Jason Aaron's Southern Bastards comic.

Maybe Goliath as well.

Heh, those were my thoughts exactly. The premise reminds me a lot of Southern Bastards.

I also think The Son could be interesting. Sounds kind of like "Giant: The TV Show". Maybe they could get Jonathan Tucker (Boone from Justified) for the James Dean role. :D

- Deadline: Cary Fukunaga Behind Event TV Series ‘The Alienist’ Reteaming With Anonymous Content & Paramount.
Cary Fukunaga is reteaming with True Detective producer Anonymous Content to direct and executive produce The Alienist, an event TV series inspired by Caleb Carr’s bestselling novel. The Alienist represents the first fruit to bear out of the three year, first-look production deal announced last year between Anonymous and Paramount TV. That splashy deal gives Paramount a first look to produce and distribute Anonymous’ TV programming across multiple platforms.

Paramount and Anonymous also said today that Oscar winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump) had come aboard as executive producer. Hossein Amini (The Two Faces Of January), who wrote the pilot, will write and exec produce the series.

Set in the tenements and mansions of Gilded Age New York City, Carr’s 1994 novel tells the story of Dr. Laszlo Kreizler who, with the help of newspaper reporter John Moore and police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, uses the emerging discipline of psychology to track down one of New York City’s first serial killers.

Our Planet is set to premiere in 2019 across Netflix territories.

HBO, Playtone Fly With Wright Brothers Mini

HBO has acquired the rights to The Wright Brothers. The new David McCullough book tells the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright, who sold and repaired bicycles out of an Ohio shop to pay for their passion: the invention of flying machines that ushered in the aeronautical age right after the turn of the 20th Century. In 1903 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the brothers changed history by successfully flying the first heavier-than-air-powered machine that carried a pilot.

National Geographic Greenlights ‘Saints & Strangers’ Scripted Miniseries

Set to air in fall 2015, Saints & Strangers — Nat Geo’s first scripted miniseries — tells the untold story behind the founding of America, chronicling the trials and tribulations of the 101 men, women and children who boarded the Mayflower for a one-way trip to the New World.

Half of these “pilgrims” were religious separatists who had abandoned their prior lives for religious freedom and an opportunity to create a new social order built on their values. The other half, “adventurers,” were mostly single males seeking financial opportunity and a rapid acquisition of wealth in a new land, or trying to escape their old identities or criminal pasts.

The message of the mini is that these two groups — the spiritual and the mercenary — continue to define the American character to this day as the personal struggles endured while working to establish their new way of life in America shaped the early DNA of our nation.

This is a bit odd:

- A female Van Helsing is coming to TV next year

This billboard for a previously unknown Van Helsing TV show is on display at MIPTV. We reached out to Dynamic TV who ultimately told us that they had no comment right now, but that more information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks.

We look forward to hearing more from Dynamic and will certainly follow up on this story when we do, but in the meantime, what does the billboard alone tell us?

For a start, the reference to 13 hour-long episodes suggests there’s no pilot forthcoming. Presumably, and in order for the ball to be rolling already, some broadcaster has already committed, but we have no idea who.

It’s not going to fit into a network as one of their year-round staples, where 20-plus episodes are made for each season. It won’t be a summer show or mid-season replacement either, as it’s marked for September screenings.

As far as an American home for this Van Helsing goes, we’d guess she’s headed to cable. Maybe “From the Producers of Fargo and Hell on Wheels” is a reference to AMC, maybe it’s a reference to Chad Oakes and Michael Frislev or maybe it’s all of the above.

CGFd818.jpg

The twitter account which "leaked" that has a bunch of pictures from MipTV which includes a new (I think) poster from Westworld, first look at Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hollow Crown II (yet again, I think so) and a bunch more.
Oh, cool. Fun to see some new posters and the like, even if it's not necessarily the key art they'll use for US marketing.

Yeah, there usually is a lot of cool stuff at mip but since it isn't aimed at the press at all you don't really get to see a lot of it. I also found this short video that shows some more of it, but nothing too exciting though.

- NY Mag: Netflix Orders Comedy Series from Aziz Ansari, Parks and Rec Writer Alan Yang
Treat yo’ self to some potentially amazing news: Aziz Ansari is teaming with Parks and Recreation writer Alan Yang for a half-hour Netflix comedy series starring Ansari, Archer voice H. Jon Benjamin and Tim and Eric’s Eric Wareheim. Vulture hears the streaming giant has ordered 10 episodes of the series, which will film in New York and will be exec produced by Ansari, Yang and Parks co-creator Michael Schur (along Dave Becky and David Miner.) In addition to Ansari, Benjamin and Wareheim, the show’s cast also includes former SNL regular Noel Wells, Lena Waithe (The Comeback) and Kelvin Yu (Popular). The project has been in the works for months now, but Netflix is only now confirming its existence. Our sources say writers have been working on the project for some time now, though Netflix and Ansari aren’t talking about plot details. Honestly, though, what the show is about seems less important than the fact that this many talented folks are being assembled on one show… not to set expectations too high or anything.

- JK Simmons To Star In Starz Drama Series From ‘Imitation Game’ Director & MRC
Coming off an Oscar win for Whiplash, JK Simmons will topline Counterpart, a supernatural thriller drama series for Starz from MRC. It was created and written by Justin Marks, writer of the upcoming Disney Jungle Book movie, with Oscar-nominated Imitation Game helmer Morten Tyldum set to direct the first two episodes.

The size of the series order is TBD. We hear the intention is to pick up two seasons the way the premium cable network recently did with another MRC package, upcoming comedy Blunt Talk starring Patrick Stewart, created by Jonathan Ames and executive produced by Seth MacFarlane.

Described as an espionage thriller with a metaphysical twist, Counterpart tells the story of Howard Silk (Simmons), a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret, when he discovers the agency he works for is guarding a secret: a crossing to a parallel dimension. Through Howard and his “Counterpart” on the other side, Prime, the show will navigate themes of identity, idealism, what ifs, and lost love.

We’ve learned that Amazon is moving ahead with Highston, a half-hour coming-of-age comedy, written by Nelson, executive produced by Borat and Bruno‘s Sacha Baron Cohen and to be directed by the Little Miss Sunshine duo of Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

The single-camera project, which is casting, centers on Highston Liggetts, a kind 19-year-old and perched on the edge of adulthood. When he encounters a world he doesn’t understand, like Elwood P. Dowd, he retreats into his vast imagination, where famous “friends” are his companions and mentors.

- USA Picks Up 1940s Hollywood Drama Pilot ‘Paradise Pictures’ From ‘Suits’ Duo
USA Network continues to experiment with drama settings, genres and time frames, giving a pilot order to old Hollywood period drama Paradise Pictures, written/executive produced by Suits scribe Rick Muirragui and executive produced by Suits creator/executive producer Aaron Korsh. Universal Cable Productions, where Korsh is under an overall deal, is the studio.

Paradise Pictures revolves around ambitious people striving to get to the top in 1940s Hollywood, when the dream factory was at its peak. Little do they know the challenges they’re about to face: the end of the studio monopolies, the blacklist and the disruptive new technology of television.
