Finally got through that monster of an interview. Good read, though not super high on new info.

Most interesting thing to me was that if you play on Hard/Dark you will get less stats when leveling up, so you have more dependency on gear upgrades. He also says that exp gains are "less generous" on Hard and Dark mode.

The impression I get from the combination of monsters stay away from large groups and that guards will kill them if they do, is that seeing monsters attacking a town will be a very rare sight.

Yeah, you're probably right. I do see the reason for it though. If they allowed monsters to dynamically attack towns, either they would have to make quest-bearing NPCs invincible, which would be strange and immersion-breaking, or else some quests would be destroyed randomly through no action of your own, which would anger a lot of gamers.

Who wants to be gypped out of parts of their game just because a group of monsters wanders too close to a town and decides to attack it?
I'm sure there are other ways to handle it I'm not thinking of, but they would likely be a lot more complex to implement.

This is probably why they made it so that some towns at the beginning are abandoned because of monsters, and only get resettled after you kill those monsters.

Indeed. Make Regions barren and on the surface seeming to lack anything to do but if you do your Monster Killing Job can suddenly turn a barren area into a thriving one and open up all sorts of new potential

Bit of an over exaggeration. I watched it no problem. Well, apart from not speaking German.

The HUD is illegible and in motion it is as low detail as sub-SD res for me.

Probably gonna start Baptism of Fire during a road trip tomorrow.

I've been reading the books as I went through Witcher 1 and 2 this past month or so. I'm up to Time of Contempt (I did read Sword of Destiny's fan translation). Really hoping I can get through at least Baptism of Fire by the time Witcher 3 comes out, but man it'd be rad if I could get through them all before that. Don't think I have quite enough time (I'm not the fastest reader out there).

Great books so far.

This is an open world RPG with world bigger than Skyrim and probably more choices and consequences than most other AAA RPGs.

I decided to pre order this for the collectors edition. I haven't pre ordered a game since current generation consoles came out. I really feel like this is going to be the first game that i consider "next gen."

I never understood the world size comparison where all they talk about is in comparison to Skyrim. Your talking about a game that who's lead platform was 360, you'd think it would be a matter of course that in the next gen with hardware 10x more powerful, games would automatically be bigger and more dense by default. Hell just cause 2 was bigger in sheer map size anyway than anything last gen and that was on the same consoles.

Skyrim was just the most popular. It wasn't the biggest open world game by far, nor was it the most dense RPG even in the generation it was in. It was popular, and easy to play.

Same reason people say something is as long as x number of school buses, a lot of people get the idea, even if it is a crude comparison.

You've answered your own confusion. It's a comparison that far more people will understand over any others.

That's the reason they use the comparison.

If you tell 9/10 gamers "it's 3x bigger than Skyrim!" They understand what you mean right away.

Many people haven't played all of the other games. If you tell 9/10 people that it's bigger than Just Cause 2. Most of them won't know what that means in terms of scale.

Being popular is probably why it's used as a point of comparison though: it's something most people are familiar with. And it was also dense with content, even if that content was (for many people, like myself) repetitive and uninteresting.

Personally I'm less interesting in size so much as density and variety. Size of map isn't really an issue with modern games, but demands for bigger game worlds don't take into account the huge increase in development resources. End of the day, if people want a game world that's dense with content that feels hand tailored and interesting, not just in quest design but also topography and presentation, concessions need to be made. More or less every insanely huge game map/world that has been made, or is being made (see: No Man's Sky) relies heavily on procedural generation. As dev tools become easier, and procedural generation algorithms more complex and accurate, in theory bigger game worlds with the sense of being hand tailored can exist. But for now the logistics of manpower and money versus time required to hand tailor a world need to be balanced.

And yeah, I think that's why Skyrim is used as a point of reference. It's a huge game world, hand tailored, with a lot of content (criticisms of said tailoring and content aside). And it's well known. Wild Hunt has huge landmasses, hand tailored, with the promise of a lot of content. The advantages of building specifically for current generation hardware are evident in the presentation and asset density, but to me the more impressive part will be how well they've accomplished those hand tailored quests and locations relative to the size of the maps. People making stuff, instead of algorithms making stuff.

EDIT: As a side, I also think scale/size of the map does spark potential for delivering on atmosphere within the intended setting, which is also a goal for these kinds of games. Sailing between two islands tends to be more immersing and convincing if the distance is somewhat believable instead of aggressively condensed. Same with forests, fields, and the middle of nowhere. Not everybody might like it, but if the size of the map allows for you to have gorgeous vistas over fields, or get lost in a dense forest, when the boarders are not painfully obvious and tiny, it's easier to get immersed in the adventure.

Wind Waker is a good example for me. It's my least favourite 3D Zelda as a whole, but I quite like the perceived emptiness of the ocean and sailing between islands. The combination of emptiness and distance immerse me in the sailing adventure and excitement of finding a new location. If it were more condensed that immersion would be reduced.

Considering review copies are PS4...
Is this confirmed? How's that going to work with Xbox only websites/ magazines?
For sure there will be some XboxOne review copies send...

P.S. No console footage at this late stage is realy frustrating.

8h Preview on PS4 from PSX Extreme - Polish Magazine:

About optimization of PS4 pre-release version (without patch):

"I enjoy the fact that during fight with greater number of enemies - animation was solid, holding 30 frames per second"

"most upset were loadings after death or fast trip options - they took about 40 second, maybe in day-1 patch they will fix it"

"during a gallop objects appear in the distance"

"music delights"

I'm still thinking that Witcher is going to be GOTY :)

It looks great, but jesus it is also so so clunky :( full of jankiness, just like previous witchers.

What kind clunkiness/jankiness you are spotting? Just curious as to me TW3 looks a lot more smoother to play than TW2, and I'm playing TW2 again in preparation for TW3.

Can't say I like the sound of this.

It also happens on PC version when using Ultra settings so popin and LOD issues are universal across all platforms. Just a thing that is bound to be there and happen in open world games with long visible distances, e.g. galloping across large field.

Well, they were playing the pre-release version.. maybe the release (review) version is better in this regard

Yep, it seems very polished. Unless he is comparing the game to a brawler like Batman which is all about perfect flow (to others areas detriment), I don't see the "jank".

It seems it's perfectly possible to fight against higher level enemies. Being surpassed by 1-4 levels means just a little bonus on toughness / damage for the enemy, 5-8 levels above you and is still possible but it turns the fight in a dangerous mini-boss encounter.

And you receive extra reward if you do a quest above your level, that's pretty cool.

JesseCox released TW3 video, ~15min; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrZP6Sq-8vI

This is just one of the great moments from that recording session. A complete preview video is coming soon!

Hah, it was a little frustrating to see him battle that monster. It's pattern was so dead simple that he really shouldn't have had that much trouble with it; roll away when it disappears, every time, not just sometimes :D The game looks pretty dope. This footage though made me understand where the people commenting on the wind and how much it's affecting trees, are coming from. Looked a little comical a few times.

The worst it's that the doesn't even try to use other magic than quen. Maybe wraiths are vulnerable to Aard or Igni. We don't know.

Haven't seen this jankiness in any of the footage so far.

Looks like a pretty polished (ehehe polish) game to me.

Yea, I'm not seeing the jank either. Most of the janky stuff was pretty apparent in videos of TW2 and I don't really see any of that here.

The only thing that you can't really see from videos is perhaps the weird and sometimes finicky interaction behavior Geralt had in TW2 but I doubt that's here because we haven't really seen or heard of it.

Looking at angry joes video I'd guess their kind of vulnerable to yrden, just like noonwraiths probably? So maybe a combo of Quen and Yrden would've been way more effektive than to just straight up dogde everytime it disappeared?

He should have read the bestiary before going in for the 2nd half of the battle, that would have likely given him the info he needed to be better prepared.

Easy to spot people who have never watched JesseCox's lets play stuff :D

True, it's my first time seeing anything from him, and I'm not dissing the guy, I liked the video as a whole :)

It's not dissing if you just pick up on how he tends to play games :D Even Jesse knows that he often hits his head against the wall few times before adjusting his approach to e.g. encounter. Just how he tends to play in basically every game. People who aren't that familiar with his... style just tend to comment on it.

Wow this sucks, is there really no autosave? He died then had to do eeeverything again just because he forgot to save.

Are we back in the 90s?

There is autosave, but it didn't autosave in that moment and I don't see why it should given he's not on a particular quest arc. For the latter autosaves should take place incrementally based on progress, but for freeform exploring? He found the location by himself, engaged the wraith by himself, and chose not to retreat. I think when you're choosing not to abide by the game's directive and instead take control over your exploration, the onus is on you to manage your saves. Which isn't hard. Just get into a habit of manually saving (which you can do) before you explore that spooky looking cemetery :p.

Gotcha but it's still a bit frustrating, you always have to keep an eye on the save button, a bit immersion breaking if you ask me, would have been cool if it automatically saves once you discover a new area.

Good thing you can save with 1 button on the PC :)

There is an autosave, but he didn't do anything significant enough to activate it.

I don't see the problem. It's actually refreshing to see a game that isn't autosaving every time you loot a creature or get halfway through a "boss" battle. Way too many games do that these days, and it feels like the player is being treated like a child.
If you want to explore, and you forget to save, too bad. Should have been more careful or remembered to manually save.

Mhmmm. Aggressive autosaving is little better than save scumming.

quicksave is in? ok that's good but still you will always have your mind on the save button, it makes you quick save after every few steps or hard enemy you beat.... "wait did i save? ah better save again".

Sorry but I can only describe it as immersion breaking. You really should not have to worry about saving in such an amazing world, it really takes you out of the game experience.

Yrden works well iirc

Is there no quicksave button on the controller? Like "back" or whatever the next controller equivalent is?

Why would you apologize for your opinion, it's perfectly valid. I was thinking more along the line of having to go into menus to save. But yeah I'd assume as a PC RPG it should have quicksave. It did in 2.
