Gamestop dumpster divers caught by cops, who happen to be Final Fantasy fans

I don't work gamestop but I work retail but we destroy products we throw away cause people dumpster dive and then try to return them to us so we have to make it obvious the stuff was purposely destroyed.
Also, bargain bins pile up after a while when stuff that just isn't sellable won't sell at any price. Add in at some point there is a tax incentive where it makes them more money to write off the product than it does to sell it.
This is most likely to keep employee theft down. It would be easier for employee theft if they could claim that they were just taking home stuff they were going to trash anyways.

I actually wrap up any razor blades I throw away in something else cause I know people dumpster dive (even if with us it's most likely thieves trying to find stuff they can try to return). Even if I didn't care about some one accidentally cutting themselves up badly, it's also a liability thing.
But... I'm not going to gaurentee every employee of retail does that. And retail does go through a lot of box knife blades.

hell,here they sold you games even if the cover is broken or worse,missing...
and whatever valuable might remain,is taken home by the guys who work there...i had a friend that knew one of them and i got a Catherine OST cd without paying a penny

They throw out completely working consoles and handhelds, and discs for games. They go out of their way to destroy the fully functioning discs so no one can use them.
I just don't see why they don't donate them to charity. It's good PR, recycling and EASIER than destroying all of those discs one by one
Because capitalism. If donating them to charity gave them a bigger tax write off than writing it off as unsellable product, they would. So if you really want to see companies do this, start focusing on trying to make donating to charity a better write off than unsellable product
.I've seen quite a few videos where 5 to 10 perfect condition games are found all at once. In fact I was ticked off one time because I had just paid $15 for Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition for the PS3 and a few days later one of the dumpster divers I watch found a perfect condition copy for free.
One guy found about 5 gift cards that all had small balances on them under a couple bucks, but there was enough of them for him to buy another game.
And then there are the massive advertising standees that get thrown out. Check out youtube channel seejayare and take a look at some of the standees in his gaming room. Pretty sure almost all of them were picked up dumpster diving.

It's even better when the people acting that way are video game journalists/writers. Has anyone else noticed that behavior on podcasts and the like? As if feigning ignorance in your chosen medium somehow makes you cooler.

In most companies/agencies you can't take things home, even if it's considered trash. You have no idea how many perfectly useful and working printers/monitors I've destroyed.

If you organise a special dump sale handing out games and consoles at ridiculous bottom prices I can't imagine you'll have much unwanted stock left by the end of the day.
Still better than just throwing stuff away

From my experience I managed to take pelnty of posters and random advertising home. I had a really cool Uncharted 2 print on thick carton, it was used on those Ps3 demo stations and when the Sony guys came to replace them (I think for Killzone 3 ones) I asked if I could keep and they didn't have a problem with it.
But functional stuff like games or accesories was generally thrown away. Say a controller came in for a waranty and we replaced it for a new one, we were not allowed to take it home and were told to throw it away (a lot of them had fixable issues).
Oh and when I started working I got plenty of leftover pre order bonuses. We would often get more pre order bonuses than actual pre order (when it was physical stuff) and we could sometimes take them home

The legality of dumpster diving varies by city and state. That doesn't answer the question if you plan on dumpster diving check out your local and state laws first.
Some places as soon as an item hits the "curb" as trash it's considered public property other areas have specific laws and ordinances about it.

Let's say you were to jump in the dumpster and have a nail go through your foot, is Gamestop liable? No idea, but it could probably end up in court. That's why I don't blame places that lock up their dumpsters.
No I don't blame them at all that's why it's important to check it out the laws first.
Up until recently items that were defective and not worth sending out were supposed to be broken (more) and dumped. That changed last year because of dumb Ass' tossing all the trash out of the dumpster and making a mess that gets the store fined. Now the only thing that ends up there are abandoned items that people leave at the store. Usual we take a hammer to those.

Likely because they were abandoned by the customer. We have plenty of people that if we can take something because of missing parts or its broken they abandon it we trash it. If we sold it you can bet there will be several news stories talking about how we steal peoples stuff and sell it.

I'm a garbage man in Minnesota, and I have found all kinds of games in the trash. Lots of PS1 games, Dreamcast games, a Super GameBoy adapter, it goes on and on. Oh I also find cash and usually about $5 in coins.
