Is it creepy for a 32 year old to live on campus in college?

Cheaper as in what? I dont have money, financial aid would pay for housing on campus, not off campus.

Are you sure? As far as I'm aware they still give aid for living off campus. And you should be able to pull a part time job to cover most of your expenses. Of course you would have to find an apartment with roommates, you probably wouldn't be able to afford it on your own.

You probably have a car and are used to getting groceries, so you'd save money and be happier off campus.

Also, dorms can be rough for introverts, and I'd imagine doubly so for someone a decade older than most students.

If you try to get into one of the junior/senior dorms or some place that's more of a "suite" with separate rooms than a roommate in the same bedroom as you, it won't be so awkward. Speaking as someone who is twenty-five in university living on campus... Honestly, most people don't care / notice your age unless you look rather old for your age. (My personal experience is probably not the best since I look five years younger than I do, lol, but I don't pay attention to people's ages either.) At the end of the day, you're there to get an education, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to live on campus. It's only awkward/creepy territory if you're in one of those buildings with the freshmen with shared bathrooms and shit. The school should probably account for your age, though.

My campus has apartments that financial aid will help finance. You could always look into that, since you said you had to rely on financial aid.

It's the attitude and your character that defines you, not necessarily your age.

You could literally be 55 years old and be the most baller ass guy on campus. Age really isn't the be all and end all factor, all things considered.

When you are comfortable with yourself, you tend to make other people comfortable. Dont' sweat it too much -- go out there and do you.

Are you comfortable around 18-24 year olds? I don't know what you're trying to ask. This isn't elementary school man. You're going to university with fellow adults. Look at it like that. I personally wouldn't want a roommate much younger than me. Though I never lived on campus either, I used to just commute from home. If I was 32, and going to university, I'd probably just look for housing nearby, maybe a small studio apartment or a basement to rent.

I mean I guess I can understand if you're iffy, but that's just life. You're older than most would be. So you'll have to live with it like that and also have to accept that a lot of the kids won't necessarily want to hang out with someone that much older.

Some kind of on-campus apartment, if available, might be OK. Living in the dorms at 32? I thoroughly enjoyed living in a dorm but by the end I was more than ready to move on. The thought of living in a dorm now makes me shudder. Do you really want to live in a building full of nothing but people aged 18 or so who are living without parental supervision for the first time?

Until he was in his mid-late 30s my uncle lived about a block from campus. He was kind of chubby and balding, but had a Harley. That was apparently enough to bring home college girls every single goddamn weekend.

As creepy as I thought it was, dude was getting his.

Actually as a 32 year old, he may technically barely qualify as a Millennial ;)

I promise you, if you were a 30 year old living in dorms, people would notice. You may not want to believe that, but its true.

Depends on how you look, obviously. People usually guess I'm 20.

You like me, you really really like me!
You're 32 man. Jesus. Get a job, get an apartment and go to school. Time to put on the big boy pants.

Back in the day I'd see families in Auburn's on campus projects. I think the school bus even made a stop. Regardless even if it feels weird to you you're doing your thing so fuck social protocol (if it's against it) and do what's best for you.

It's older siblings duty to fuck with you. Ignore their comments, no matter how difficult. Do what is cheaper and easier for you, and take it from there.

If you're uncomfortable or unhappy with the results, change your living arrangements when possible. If you're lucky, you'll get a roomie who is introverted and/or socially awkward.

I'm like you. But, that said, I lived 5 years with an outgoing person who never met someone she didn't like. She's still my closest friend. But she ALWAYS respected my boundaries. When she brought friends over, I was warned in advance, and they were told not to bother me if they ever wanted to come back.

If there's respect on both sides, it can work out. We never had a discussion over my introversion or need for space/alone time.

Do you have to start out in a Freshman dorm? It would be really awkward.

But if you can go straight to the apartment style dorms it might not be so bad.

I really don't understand American college/university culture. You're there to get an education, not make friends. If it's more convenient for you then go for it.

Now that sounds like a legit concern.

why not both...get a great education, make some great friends, join some great clubs, have some great sex etc.

You're over 21, so you'll quickly become everyone's best friend.

Japanese studies though...

EDIT: Living in dorms sucks though, I hate having to share a room. Live off-campus if you can.

My fiance lives in dorms. She's 25 and sometimes has issues co-existing with the younger crowd in the more dorm like settings.

And from what I've seen.....dorm life has potential to be some nasty living.

At 32, can you deal with it?

My school gives a refund check for off-campus residents for the amount they would have gotten in financial aid if they lived in dorms. its a pretty good deal, because apartments are actually the cheaper option anyway. Ask your school. And it is extremely creepy that you would be living in the dorms.

Inquire with the residence hall administration about housing for older students. They probably have a graduate dorm they'd put you in if it made you feel more comfortable. Or maybe a single dorm. I'm around the same age and I cant imagine living with a 17-18 year old.

Yes it is. Not to mention more expensive than just getting a regular apartment. Also I hate to be that guy but what are your plans once you are 35 with a degree in Japanese studies from an unknown non-flagship state school?

It depends a bit on the school. A party school will attract idiots and you'll be creeper #1. A brilliant school will have people of all ages.

But you really don't want to hang out with -most- of these people. Personally I never acted like the 18 year olds in my college. Frankly, the worst of all are the geek group (not smart types like nerds, I mean video gamer geeks). They gush loudly about Pokemon and The Sims all the time and they run around like middle schoolers (literally).

You know what, you're right. Killing myself is looking better every post.

Woah, I don't know if you're kidding so don't do anything rash. There's some real advice in this thread so just take that and ignore the people making fun. It is a bit creepy to live in the dorms, but it's better to know that now than once you're moved in. There might be a building for older students or you can room with some other adult students in an apartment. It will work out.

Also if you're seriously contemplating suicide then please get help.

Focus on what you want to do with your life first. Because Japanese studies are usually what meandering nerds with no plan pick as their major. Really think about it.

Whats the point? I should just wake up to reality that I can't cut it. I'm a naive idiot who thought I could pursue something I might like, but without really looking at the big picture. Yeah, who ever heard of this stupid school, I only picked it cuz it was kinda close....not gonna amount to anything, I'll still end up just living in some cardboard box someday when my parents cant support me anymore, because I can't cut it in a job that involves working for a coorperation, because that's all they are these days. Fuck it, I'm a loser who can't make friends, and is just made fun for everything, who doesn't even have brothers who cared to come to my graduation yesterday, or friends. I'm better off fucking dead.

The creepy part is majoring in Japanese.

I say this jokingly, as I move to Japan next year to teach English and my girlfriend is a Japanese major.

Yeah, I don't think you should live on campus.

Eh there were plenty of older guys/women at my college. Most of them lived in the dorm building that was all non-roommate dorms though. I can't specifically recall any living in actual dorms though, freshman usually have their own dorms specific to that class year, that's the only place that it would be creepy IMO, after the first year I'd pretty much consider most college kids adults as immature as some may be. It's not like you're living with a bunch of preteens.

You're doing a great thing going for those qualifications, no-ones denying that. I could say the college I went to and am working at now and mostly no-one would have heard of it. There are nearly 5K degree granting institutions in the US. Go for your degree, sort out different accommodation if you feel out of place in your living situation. The campus staff are there to support you.

I didn't think they promoted women so high in the Japanese military.

sorry shitty joke. :p

I'm 32 and just graduated. I lived off campus but if I lived on campus I would have gotten so much ass.

It's only creepy if you're creepy.
