Splatoon has a marketing push comparable to Mario Kart 8 (in UK)

I've seen signs and cardboard displays in my local Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart.

I remember Dragon Quest IX got a similar push from Nintendo, and it sold very well. I'm glad they're starting to realize that decent marketing naturally means more sales.

Here in the Netherlands it will get quite a lot of retail space as well. Most stores will get standees, deco cubes, posters to give away (although limited) as well as a big entrance presence.

On paper I can't see why Splatoon can't be a hit. Family-friendly team shooter.. shouldn't this be a hit amongst kids and up? Popular amongst people leery of buying their kids COD?

No one new about golden sun 1 in the gba when it was released and thanks to the european commercial on tv, being so good, and being so promoninent, it sold shit tons.
Everyone said "hey have you seen the golden sun commercial? I want a GBA just for that!"

I dont understand why they havent seen this yet. Tomadachi Life and Animal Crossing also got tons of advertisment, thats why they sell.

Huh, Chandra Nair? He worked on Cube magazine and was later the editor on ONM after the reboot when Wii came out, I think. It'll be interesting to see what the marketing is like for this, I haven't seen any around my travels just yet.

I thought I recongnised that name....

The unfortunate thing is the typical school kid wants call of duty as all their friends have it.

Owning a Wii u is embarrassing as all their friends own ps4s and xboxes.

A real shame Nintendo seem to have lost their touch, when I grew up Nintendo were for "hardcore gamers".

They just get written off as "kiddy" nowadays, and unfortunately I can't see Splatoon changing that perception, and making people take Nintendo seriously as a proper gaming console.

A shame really as in my opinion they've got the best exclusive line up of all the consoles

When haven't they? It's not something that has just shown up. They were being called that in the 90s.

I am in the US and my son of 7 talks about this game CONSTANTLY. I know what it is, but I had no idea how he found out. Apparently it is easy to watch Nintendo Direct stuff on the WiiU and he watches the Splatoon video a lot. Pretty neat because it looks like a decent game to play with him.
New Direct videos are pretty prominently advertised on the Wii U and 3DS eShops, just so you know.

The next step is an entire range of waterguns or NERF projectile blasters based on the property, Target Preorders in the US come with a watergun, for example, but there's so much POTENTIAL.

I'd also like to buy an exclusive "squid hat" one day; I picked up two unofficial ones at a local fair back in February. They're cool, but not Splatoon cool.

The ones playing Tetris, Pokemon and the colorful Super Mario World?
The so called "hardcore gamers" in the 80's and 90's were on PC playing (text) adventures, RPG's, RTS games, simulators and FPS games.

Nintendo has lost their touch in different ways, but not in the software and game mechanics they make, especially not with Splatoon as an "online first" team based shooter.

this happened in the 90s too

ever heard of "Doom"

plus they made Midway take all the blood out of MK1

The game will probably sell decently to existing WiiU owners, but will it sell any WiiUs?

It's really hard to get online shooter fans to move consoles.
Most of the shooter fans already have a Sony/MS console with their set group of friends, accounts, achievements/trophies, etc... and have a library of dozens of shooters to choose from.

You have to convince people to:
pay for new console
pay for the game
get their friends to do the same
use a different controller
give up voice chat.

Just to play this one game. That's a tough sell.

on the plus side:
there are many more WiiU games that would make the purchase worth it
Online is free!

I hope it does well so other developers are encouraged to take a long look at the current state of competitive online shooters and try to come up with new mechanics. Nintendo coming up with the most interesting idea in that space for many years is expected (cause Nintendo) but incredibly sad.

I like how Nintendo is handling Splatoon. What was the last new IP, which get this treatment from Nintendo?

oh and ye...can't wait for Splatoon anymore!
Ofc already preordered and I sold Splatoon to a friend of mine. So I did my part. Maybe I'm gonna buy it twice. Because in three weeks I'm having a game weekend at my place. Some friends will bring their WiiUs with them, so I see this as an opportunity to sell Splatoon to them xD

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Not that surprised. Splatoon is featured on the cover of the Argos gaming mini-catalogue. (Along with Yarn Yoshi and IPs from other consoles.)

At least no one can blame marketing when it bombs. Don't get me wrong, I would be happy for Nintendo if it's successful..I just don't see how.
With the push Splatoon is getting, it won't bomb. It'll at least outsell Bayonetta 2 & pass up The Wonderful 101 by miles. Basically a modest success, enough to justify a sequel on the next console where it'll be even bigger (think Pikmin's rise to stardom).

Nintendo isn't gonna give Amiibos to franchises they think will bomb, especially before a Zelda or Pokémon line of Amiibos.

Is telling they're not advertising on the kids channels etc ( Mario Kart was every ad break, haven't seen a single Splatoon ad) but they are advertising before adult movies luke Mad Max.

It makes sense for UK. A look at the weekly top shows those are the only people still buying most of the games there.

Agreed there, we've got enough preorder numbers (particularly from Japan) to be pretty confident it's not going to bomb. Youtube traffic seems stronger for Splatoon than most Nintendo titles sans Mario/Mario Kart/Pokemon/Zelda/Smash.

They may get dinged for no voice chat and lack of features at launch, but I'm also confident it's going to review fairly well.

Everybody and their mom wanted this, but I think we all should be a bit surprised at how ninty pulled this off. They actually fucking did it. Kind of shocked in a good way lol.I'm actively wishing success on this franchise for our own sake. If we don't buy this game we have no right moving forward.

There is always people say but that one game isn't enough.

Doesn't matter that there is plenty of exclusive games on the Wii U they might find as good as exclusive games on their PS4/Xboxes. The thing is that the Wii U won't be the only device you need to use - you have to either have a PC, another console or a handheld. As much as it tries Nintendo at the moment is not equipred to support both a console and handheld at the same time. So financially if you can only afford one thing - I wouldn't recommend a Wii U unless you have young kids. If you have spare cash and already have a decent PC or a console/handheld than Wii U is wonderful. There is no comparision as far as exclusive titles go that the Wii U has some great games.

Splatoon will be in the top 5 most succesfull games released on the Wii U. There is a lot of factors for this and the main thing is that I think its more appaling on a mechanical level than a lot of other games out there. It provides something totally different and there would be at least 15-25% of existing Wii U owners that will probably buy it by the end of the year.

Lets also look at the way the game is build, Nintendo EAD has put in so many things over the course of the last year. At E3 they didn't have a Single Player Campaign - right now it sounds like there is a flashed out Single Player that back than no one really expected would be much different than the multiplayer. In 6 months there could be a lot more content added if the team is tasked with building the game out. An exansion of the game similar to Mario Kart for the single player, while adding more multiplayer modes for free can make it pretty succesful. It would be interesting if EAD's team remains invovled especially if the game has a succesful launch.

Right now Splatoon is charting well in Japan for pre-orders. Seems like it could be the 4th biggest launch for a Wii U game there. The Japanese market has taken a hit but moving over 150k in the first week would be entirely possible.
It's doing great across Europe - especially with the lower price Nintendo Europe has set for Splatoon. There has even been commercials in Russia which doesn't seem like something Nintendo does too often.
I'm not sure how well it would do in the States and Canada - unless Nintendo US does a bundle like MK8 with a free game for people who register Splatoon at launch.

It definitely will be one of the major releases for the Wii U and a successful new IP

Nintendo sure is having a hard time releasing games for the console. They don't really have any choice other than pushing what is available.

If this game sells to 1/3rd of the Mario Kart 8 base or even 1/3rd of the Smash Bros base it will be a success. To be honest I dont see how this isnt another million seller. It may not DRIVE console sales, but the game is going to make them some money to at least justify its development.

Or they want to actually promote a new IP so that it'll become a franchise they can rely on in the future, learning from their mistakes from the lack of promotion for their previous new IPs (The Wonderful 101, Code Name: STEAM, etc.).

Xenoblade got lucky due to it being a huge critical success, & the limited US release of the Wii version made it a bit easier for it to succeed in the States (plus it selling out over in America quicker than expected). Shulk eventually being added to Smash also helped the long-term growth of the franchise, something that will happen for the Inklings at some point either as DLC for Smash 4 or as a newcomer for Smash 5 (it's more of a when than an if at this point).

I think it will work. I remember they did a push for mariokart in the netherlands as well which was completely weird to see, as I've never seen a nintendo add that I can recall. then all of a sudden, mario kart was on buses. Nintendo doesn't normally drop money on useless endeavors. they must know they are on to a winner with this thing.

Also another thing not to dismiss is the notifications you get on the gamepad... I wish they had this feature in place since launch because it is a great marketing tool for game releases .. A few of my friends who just smash or kart got the testfire / splatoon release notification and really want to buy the game now.

sure, the grognards. eaten by a grue etc. they were also playing romhacks of super mario world probably lol.

I want to know the history of the pokemon competitive scene. It sprang into being while I wasn't paying attention to pokemon, apparently

It might not do very big numbers, but if they can get a foot in the door I'd be very happy, the IP has a lot of potential.

NoE releases 3 other Wii U games around the same time as Splatoon (Kirby and Rainbow Paintbrush, Yoshi's Woolly World, Art Academy: Atelier), and yet Splatoon is getting the marketing budget.

Or Nintendo actually has experience on when to use the big marketing budget?

I think the whole thing about voice chat is blown out of proportion, the sales that could make this game a success saleswise would come from people that could care less about it.
