Final Fantasy XII (PS2) is still a gorgeous game

noticed you left out Vaan's abs

I don't understand how the game looks so good but Vaan's texture is so bad.
Yes, I left that out for a reason haha, the first image in the OP is the equivalent of pregnant actresses being hidden behind vases or lamps in TV shows :p

I hope if an HD remaster is done that they give it the Type-0 treatment. FMV models, modern shaders, better lighting, and Directx11 effects included, but this time reduce on motion blur.
Better audio and re-orchestrated tracks also to redress it

And if they wanted to, TressFX the hair and fur

If this game gets a remaster, I hope they don't load the game up with gee whizz effects like motion blur and chromatic whatever it's called. It's been proven for years that it looks absolutely amazing with a simple resolution increase, so just adding some more endgame hunts and including the Zodiac stuff would be enough.

I really fear that this game will get the George Lucas special edition treatment when and if it ever gets a turn on the re-release train.

I just started replaying this (albeit the IZJS version on my PC) a couple of weeks ago and it really is stunning. The textures are beautiful and the painted aesthetic is very appealing, not to mention the incredible score and high quality voice acting. Truly a gem in my opinion; my favourite Final Fantasy and the easiest to return to on account of how much fun it is. The job system and turbo speed are vast improvements over the original release.

It would be wonderful to see an HD re-release; I'd support that in a heartbeat.

it was amazing what devs were doing with ps2 hardware around the end of its life

i always have a hard time going back to FFXII knowing that it could've been even better had it not run into the development problems it did, but a remaster would have me coming back in no time. seems like they just want to keep re-releasing FFX though

If they don't announce something at E3 I'm gonna play this again. So good.

or the bunny ears?

There is no Dolby 5.1 in FFXII, there is only Dolby Pro Logic II which is a matrix encoded stereo signal. You aren't going to get surround sound out of that unless you are running your audio through a receiver with Pro Logic support.
Maybe that's what it was. Been a while since I tried. My sound bar does support Pro Logic but it wouldn't kick on through PCSX.

Using a Claro II sound card and digital RCA.

It had some pretty bad antialiasing tech though. I always got horrible jaggies even on a CRT TV, far worse than in contemporary PS2 games. So everything looked good extremely up close, but even the slightest distance introduced a lot of interference.

FF12, one of the few FFs i couldnt get into because i was too hyped for the possibility of a story being as good/greater than Tactics, I'd buy an HD remaster if it came out, but i'll still go on record saying Vaan and Penelo were the worst things to happen to this game's development. (aka Characters that were added for the sake of marketing, and they sucked )

Excellent art direction can make up for any hardware shortcomings. Look at some of the Wii's or even Gamecube's best offerings such as SMG/2, Xenoblade, or the Metroid Prime Series.

God damn I loved this game – still kicking myself for not completing it. Now I hope S-E do right by me and announce the HD remaster at E3 to be released during July sometime.

Main reasons I want a HD remaster is for uncompressed audio and the Zodiac Job System. The fact that the visuals will upscale nicely into HD is a nice bonus.

We'll probably hear about the HD remaster later this year (maybe at TGS?). Release it next year for the 10th anniversary of XII in Japan and NA (hopefully they just ignore the EU 10th anniversary and give it to us before that since I wouldn't want to wait until 2017 to play it).

Some of the character art style is top of the industry. Sure some of them are also really bad like Vaan but mostly great.

...God I hate SE for not continuing with the FF12 formula.

The localization and general writing have taken such a horrible backslide. I don't see XV changing that, either.

Well, it was one of the last great games for the PS2. They squeezed all the juice out for this beauty. Come on Sony & Square, gimme dat PS4 remaster at E3.

The audio sounded compressed, but can anyone with more info chime in on this?

Do SE have better audio for FFXII preserved, or is the PS2 audio all we'll ever have?

I wonder if a XII remaster will be PS4 exclusive. Or if they'll go PS4/Vita or PS4/PS3/Vita or even PS4/PS3.

I believe the PS2 game filled up most of the disc so they had to compress audio to get it all to fit. As for whether they have better audio? Hard to say with SE. Knowing them they probably lost it.

The amount of depth put into this game is still astounding. The game looks gorgeous, but looking into all of its elements is where the magic truly is. The amount and variety of stuff you could do was generous and the hunting quests were simply perfection.

Also, it has my favorite towns in the series so far, filled with life and each one conveys the tone it should through NPCs, music and architecture. Art direction in this game was top-notch if you ask me.

There is no way in this world an HD Remaster of this game wouldn't make sense, it has to happen. It should be announced this year and release in Spring 2016, while we wait for XV
PLS SQUARE, GIMME

Damn, I want to play this again with trophies.

Dat "Slay Yiazmat" gold trophy *0*

Just waiting on that HD remaster. Definitely in my top three final fantasy games. I really want to try out that zodiac version job board.

As a person who's been playing since the original on NES, it's my favorite entry behind FFIV and FFVI (^____^)

Such a ridiculously special game (a lot of due to it's yet to be topped localization/writing/VA) that I honestly think is just a glorious accident in introspect.

This is a day one purchase if it ever gets remastered. I want to play with Basch again or just set him up in berserk mode and watch him kick ass. I can just imagine the how glorious the Esper fights would look in HD.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
It's unbelievable how good and simple is the hair in FFXII

Looks better than a lot of things you see nowadays.

My favourite FF. The overall aesthetic felt so good, so cohesive. Add one for a remaster, or a Vita port (lol). Hitoshi Sakimoto's music was so good too.

Brilliant art-style and cinematography, yes. Couldn't appreciate it as much as today back then, though. If only Vaan and Penelo's designs weren't as bad.
Can't wait for the inevitable HD version.

If they redid Vaan, I would love it. All the other characters were great, but I just couldn't stomach Vaan at the time.

Seriously tempted to just hook up my BC PS3 and play thru the PS2 version again because I'm tired of waiting.
STILL have my PS2 CE Steelbook :)

This is the only mainline FF game i've never played. I'm really hoping for a remake announcement if FFX/X2 sold well.

IMO this was the only good non MMO Final Fantasy after IX. I've been wanting to replay it again, but I'm holding off for that IZJS HD Remaster. If you took out Panelo and Vaan, this game also has the best cast.

An HD remake wouldn't fix the combat though... Seriously, most bosses were press button for awesome, repeat til boss is dead.

I only played half of it, can't remember why because I really liked it. I especially liked the battle system, maybe it was because it didn't have random encounters. I really hope this gets a remaster so I can finish it this time.

X is still my favorite though.

I really cant understand this type of complains. The battle system is basically the same of Baldur's Gate/Dragon Age and I don't see this kind of criticism towards those games. Also, you can issue every single command in battle, if you want: if you think this is slow, well, that's how the older final fantasies played before XII. If people think FFXII is automated, God forbid them from playing XIII.

Could somebody explain the quickenings to me? They are part of the game that I just didn't get. The game seemed to build itself around a believable and grounded world that followed its own rules, but then the characters were suddenly able to just shoot laser beams and hurl death orbs all over the place. Was it just a gamey super move to make battle more interesting, or was there a story reason why that sort of thing was possible? I mean, even in the intro tutorial area, nobody seems to bat an eye when it happens right in front of them.
