Witcher 3 Patch 1.04 is out on pc

Well...had the patch for less than an hour and it locked up within the hour. First crash since turning off my over clock back in 1.02.

Not a good start.

Edit: locked up again 5 minutes later. Now its unplayable. Fuck this.

Some Before and after shots. Before is patch 1.03 after is 1.04. Both are 1440p with everything maxed out (hairworks on). My rig is a newly built (<1 week old!) Devil's Canyon Build with msi GTX 970. Stock values on the pc, very mild OC on the 970. What do you guys think? Personally, I don't see much of a difference lol.
That doesn't look like it's working to me, especially in the very first two pictures.

 1. Since you're using nVidia, do you by any chance have a custom Witcher 3 profile in the nVidia control panel?
 2. Can you verify in your user.settings file that the TextureMipBias=-1 line exists?
 3. Can you verify in the Witcher 3 graphical settings that textures are set to ULTRA instead of LOW? (they default to LOW after the patch)

When I launch the game it says I'm running in 1.04

1.) I have no custom profiles on the Nvidia control panel, I barely know how to use it.
2.) all the settings are at ultra (for those screen shots)
3.) I cant find that line of code in my ini settings.

Try renaming user.settings to something like "user.settings.OLD", then launching WItcher 3 again. Set your graphics settings to ultra however you want, then quit.

You should then be able to open user.settings again (the game will recreate it) and make sure the bias line shows up.

I was getting crashes with 1.3 when trying to load the game. All I would get was a black screen and I couldn't go back to the desktop. Hope this patch fixes that.

Didn't crash the third time but the camera locked so close to Geralt that his head was taking up about 70% of the screen. This patch is a mess. I'm gonna not play it until the new patch is out.

Yup that did the trick. That line of code has appeared. So here are some "real" before after shots. again this is 1440p, mild OC gtx 970, 16gb ram, everything max including hairworks. NOW I can see the difference.

What's your operating system and graphics card? It's hard to compare without comparing systems. I'm fine on a GTX 770 2GB with Windows 7 64-bit home premium, for example.

Now you're talking! Glad I could help. :D

I wonder where those console load times occur?

Having played some of the PS4 version, I found that it loaded nearly as fast as my PC (which is to say, extremely fast). The only time it took longer was upon death but, even then, it was no more than 10-20 seconds.

I saw that one video someone posted of the PS4 version taking well over a minute to load but haven't seen that happen as of yet. Not even close.

Yeah the longest loadtime I've had on PS4 was maybe 14-15 seconds at most after a death in the middle of nowhere.

i5 4690k, 16GB ran, GTX 970. Removed my OC from MSI afterburner after it was causing random crashes, but that was on 1.02. 1.03 ran like butter. This is giving me no end of pain.

I'm glad you guys like the LOD bias changes... I can't stand them. Texture shimmering just looks horrible. I play at 2560x1440. Had to modify my config file back to 0 to make the shimmer go away.

What OS and driver version?

I think it's working...

Hard to tell.

I'm not 100% sure about the bushes in that last shot, but it may be hard to say without a side-by-side comparison. I assume you checked the user.settings file to make sure bias is -1? Also are you using a custom nVidia profile? Someone mentioned issues with that unless you set LOD bias to "allow" instead of "global".

I forced 16x anisotropic filtering via the control panel. That's all I did.

Drowners seem sharper to me than usual though, that's for sure.

I posted this in the performance thread, but it seems appropriate here considering that this patch caused this for me:

It seems like this latest patch changed my textures to lower than Ultra even when I change it back to Ultra settings and no matter how many times I change it in the settings it won't go to Ultra. I even tried changing the texture budget to 800 and making the file read only and it didn't work.

This has to be a glitch or I'm missing something because when I go talk to a merchant or anyone else that puts the game in to the text menu mode (with a closeup of Geralt), the textures automatically go back to Ultra and stay that way when you tell the person farewell and start playing again. I tried saving the game and reloading the save but that didn't keep the settings either. :(

Anyone have this issue?

Did you check the user.settings file though for the -1 value? Apologies if you already mentioned it and I just missed it.

Yup, same issue. Game reverts to low textures on my 980 every time I start it up.

I've definitely experienced more pop in and a few freezes during dialogue today. Both things that I did not notice prior. Playing at 1440p on a Titan X everything maxxed.

New patch has certainly reduced the number of crashes I used to get while switching to inventory. Now I can actually open it 4 out of 5 times! Still not completely stable though.

And I think the geometry LoD distance has been improved a bit. I'm seeing parts of a specific building in Novigrad show up much farther away than it did yesterday. Could be a placebo effect though. Should have taken screenshots yesterday…

My performance has been great all around, haven't experienced any crashes at all. Have had a few strange glitches though (Geralt's arms being invisible during cutscenes and a noticeable amount of NPC pop-in, especially in Novigrad).

Since turning off my overclock and closing Afterburner, I've had maybe two or three crashes since 1.02 was released. One of those crashes was a memory leak.

I have a GTX 970.

I did have a weird bug where, after playing gwent, the camera focused on Geralt and everything else was blurry. Only happened once, had to load a previous save.

So I've been reading up on this whole 1.03/1.04 Mipmap Bias stuff and if I understand correctly, it's like this:

Patch 1.03: TextureMipBias value = 0
This will give you worse IQ (compared to 1.04), but will greatly improve the extermination of shimmering and aliasing.

Patch 1.04: TextureMipBias value = -1.0 (Ultra)
This will give you an improvement in IQ (compared to 1.03), but you will notice more shimmering and aliasing

So it's basically a question of what you would rather have, right? Would you rather have lesser IQ but no shimmer/aliasing or would you rather have better IQ, but more shimmering/aliasing?

It seems like everyone in this thread is going for the 1.03 way (the 0 value). Are there also people sticking to 1.04?

I haven't played with the new patch yet, so I think I'll start with better IQ and see if the shimmering/aliasing is bad enough to make me revert back to 1.03 as well. For the record, I'm playing at 1440p with both in-game AA and NVCP applied FXAA. I don't mind the FXAA blur too much.

Those issues were there already before the latest patch.

When the camera messes up, just save, exit the game, reload and you're good to go.

Do not use imageshack on GAF, If their servers brake or erase your screens in the near future (thing they usually do) and the yellow frog appears, you could be banned.

Use this one instead:
http://www.abload.de/
Its fast, easy to use, dont erase, and doesnt compress your images.

Game tends to crash for me sometimes when I'm talking to NPCs and during fist fighting in that beginning village in Skellige.

so the the sharper image of 1.04 seems to exposed the bad anti-aliasing method CDPR is using.

I play this at 1080p on my HDTV instead of downsampling from 1440 like what I'm doing usually (so I can have 60fps) should I use Nvidia FXAA from control panel?

So I'm confused, am I not supposed to be using custom settings in the nvidia cp for Witcher 3? I checked my user.settings and the bitmap -1 is in there. Is that all I need for the new textures to take effect on Ultra? Also, should I turn on 16x AF in the CP or just leave it on application controlled?

That was apparently my most recent screenshot before 1.04 so it's what I picked to try to reproduce. Kind of a funny bug since it didn't completely break my game.

Vesemir jumped on an invisible horse very early in the game, rode into the ground, and got stuck and unresponsive. Loading a save didn't fix it. I was able to go into a building and trigger a cutscene to warp him out, though.

I'm not sure about a control panel AF setting (my guess is that leaving it at 16x AF is fine). For LOD, if you have a custom nVidia profile, just make sure it has LOD bias set to "Allow".

*edit* Sorry for the double post.

Anyone managed to stop the stuttering yet?

Mine runs at a pretty steady 60fps but when walking/riding around every few seconds there's an annoying stutter. Drops 4/5 frames every time.

Wow I love the new update - at 1080p the foliage now looks crisp versus being overly blurry

Didnt expect to be so noticeable but for me it made a great looking game even nicer looking (since foliage being blurry was my only complaint, and very minor)

I always get way worse performance using borderless fullscreen, in any game. I would always recommend true fullscreen unless you're using multiple screens at once.

I feel like this is the first time I've ever heard someone say this. Doesn't full screen with v-sync create a greater demand than borderless windowed?

Edit: Did some digging and apparently not.

I don't know if it's this patch or something else, but I've been noticing some odd things with foliage now. When I walk over some bigger foliage it doesn't sway naturally but it gets squashed in a weird manner and the mesh seems to stretch. When using Aard's alternative mode all the foliage that is impacted streches REALLY unnaturally and then snap back into place. It's quite funny looking but I did not notice this before...

I didn't get it lined up exactly, but I tried to take a comparison shot after the 1.04 patch. As far as I'm aware, this is ultra texture setting versus the new ultra texture setting. I had other settings customized to try to get about 60 fps on a i3570k 4.2 GHz + 2GB 770.

The foliage DOES look nicer, but sadly I seem to get around 53 fps at that location now. I'm not 100% sure I had 60 fps there before, but I'm still considering turning something else down to see if I can get 60 fps.

The patch made your horse invisible!?

The detail in the trees farther out is incredible now.
