Nikkei: Nintendo's NX platform will use an Android OS

Well I guess it's probably a cheap machine intended to play the few mobile Nintendo games that will come out.

Just before anybody freaks out, an android-derived OS doesn't imply that it's a tiny 69 dollar android box or something.

Welp...

Seriously guys, it may use a forked version of a type of popular Linux as a basis. So what? That has ZERO to do with compatibility, UI, security, or anything else. Stop taking this as something it's not guys.

This is bad. Android has a huge Piracy Problem, and I think the last thing Nintendo wants is bad sales because of that. They better have a Solution for that

Nintendo has a damn fucking aggressive legal team, so I reckon they've worked out something they're confident in at least. That said, DS/3DS piracy was mad..

It makes sense in terms of how Nintendo has been getting a lot of successful mobile games onto the 3ds lately. It will make their platform more accessible.

Android-based? I wonder if Nintendo will be able to prevent widespread piracy which I imagine would be a very serious problem for them (unless all their new content is F2P).

Is piracy truly an issue for a company so big in the possible ecosystem of the Android platform? The player base they'd be opening themselves up to effortless dwarfs those who would hunt for pirated copies and the like.

Not saying for them to be flabby, but they're such a company where they very likely won't struggle.

True and people tried to explain this but no one could wrap their narrow mind around it.
Anyway, good. Now they should do faster emulating work.

There will be absolutely nothing related to NX at e3.

People will still be miffed and we will still have to remind them that they already said that.

Hope this just means Android apps and games will work on this device. Otherwise, piracy of Nintendo games will probably increase greatly.

Is this good or bad???
No way to know. There are no hard facts we know of besides the Android OS and the fact that NX is a dedicated gaming platform. We don't even know if it is a handheld or a home console. There is no reason to freak out or even be underwhelmed. We know nothing and the machine is at least 17 months away from landing on store shelves.

Mind posting an excerpt through the google translator tool, or is said content paid and therefore not be able to be posted?

No one doubts you, but it would be nice to see it being elaborated upon at least.

I'm not going to post the entire article, but the relevant part is here:

(And before anyone freaks out, the final line about the next Dragon Quest game being on PS4 is probably referring to DQH2. :p)

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Not speculation. It specifically states an inside source, and they quote the source directly in the article.

Corporate Nintendo will always claim otherwise when the news spread; however, the Nikkei has been mostly on the money in regards to Nintendo.

Maybe Nintendo is looking at Android OS as their basis for their own internally developed-operating system? It would surprise me if Nintendo adopted Android OS outright.

I'm not the technical guy to do this, but someone might need to explain what "based on android" means XD

A lot of assumptions about form factor and hardware specifications are going to be presented by people who don't have any real understanding about what they're talking about.

People already seem to assume that "android based" means "criminally underpowered because it's the OS of smartphones".

Way to jump to conclusions already, guys!

Less time building basic features, more time skinning it with Nintendo-style quirks. I'm ok with this.

Granted, Nintendo may actively disable some features they'd get for free, because that can be their style. But it gives them a base to work from, anyway.

Guys, just because it's running Android doesn't mean it's going to be an Ouya. Knowing Nintendo I'm pretty sure they're going to make a super customized skin like FireOS.

People seem to forget the Dreamcast ran Windows CE. That didn't mean the Dreamcast was suddenly a computer.

Probably the former, a la Fire OS.

The idea here would presumably not be for Nintendo to give up all control of the NX OS.

That's what I was thinking, it's likely to be a (heavily) modified version of AOSP with some security/anti-piracy measures thrown in. I'd be very curious what they do to the system, since I imagine using AOSP for a console requires a lot of heavy optimizing since Android is not the most efficient platform.

Just because Google haven't implemented heavy ass DRM it doesn't mean Nintendo will not. Piracy is just as easy as you allow it to be.

Depends how big is that "based" is Android-based, if highly customized then i don't see huge problems but only lots of advantages, if it uses essentially a skinned version of Android then i see lots of problems.

The worry might come from this + Nintendo's recent partnership with DeNA about just what kind of games/console Nintendo is focusing on in the future.
