New PS4 model with 1TB HDD incoming

This may be related to the new power supply that Taiwanese electronics company was getting order from "Japanese game console vendor" (sorry I forgot the link).

Less power consumption may be due to new GDDR5 chip and weight reduction should come from new power supply.

Edit: Found the link (you must be the member to see it). Shipment already started at May and 1M units/month.

I'd be upset(just got a PS4 yesterday), but I don't think I'll need a ton of space anyways as I play all my multiplats on PC.

And if it doesn't have a BluRay player, then I wouldn't want it anyways since I rely a lot on used games.

No way there will be a price cut. This will be the higher end model.

It's an obvious/simple way to have a model they can charge more for, but it's not really an irritation for early adopters, since it's so easy to upgrade.

I'm a little surprised it took this long.

Edit: There will be no other changes to the hardware. It is just going to be swapping the 500gb drive for a 1tb one. It's going to be a decision driven by wanting to make more money, and it has basically no drawbacks. There will be minimal additional cost added to the manufacture process.

Or maybe the 1TB model will just replace the 500GB model and price will remain the same.

Skylanders for one only has a physical version. Not sure if there are more. But not every single PS4 retail game has a digital counter part.
Also Puyo Puyo Teris is only available digital, but that is most probably a weird license issue...

Will wait for the 2.5TB model that will eventually come with the Super Slim :p

The console is already very small as it is. It really can't get much smaller when you factor the dimensions for both the HDD and the Blu-Ray drive.

Outside of cutting the motherboard down and resorting to an external power supply. That is the only way.

It's almost identical to the size of the PS3 Slim which was small itself.

That's not gonna happen. They're not desperate, they just want to keep their lead.

The XBO dropped $50 and people scooped that up like crazy. Sony doesn't need to have a fire sale, but a $50 price drop while offering a "one-and-done" $399 package would be a good move.

They will be desperate over the course of 2016 as they reach "core" market saturation. The Xbox One price drop to $350 only had a small effect, and only during the holidays.

$349 will not get new people on board, $299 will.

The Xbox One should also come down to $299 by this holiday. Time for these consoles to start selling to the late adopters and casual gamers. History has shown us that these consoles will not survive being more than $299 past a certain point.

Well it's possible, considering Sony covered thier base by making every single PS4 retail release available on the PS Store.

This means a full digital PS4 console without a Blu-Ray drive has access to the entire library (currently) via digital download.

Although this also may confirm a few things as well. If Sony was to ever include disc support for PS2 or PSX games via a future software based backwards compatibility without using PS Now, this eliminates that prospect, however it still doesn't rule out PSOne or PS2 Classics digitally, if they ever become a thing on a PS4.

Removing the Blu-Ray drive also means shifting further away home theater making the PS4 a more pure gaming device that focuses entirely on just digital content.

However the problem with this is those that already own a physical library on the PS4 would not find a use for it. So this will certainly divide the SKU base two ways, those that want physical versions of games and those that are purely digital only.

I don't think Sony is going to have a split SKU for this, and would rather have an all-in-one SKU that covers everything.
Also the PS4 is designed as a 4K blu-ray player and media hub. Just like the PS3 pushed blu-ray, the PS4 is going to push 4K blu-ray. 4K blu-ray has a digital bridge feature where copies of 1080P and 4K blu-ray movies or the entire disk in a MKV container will be on the Hard disk or able to be copied or streamed across the home network.

This makes a 1 TB hard disk a minimum size for a 2015 PS4 released in October with 4K blu-ray enabled. A external 3.5 inch drive can be 6TB while the largest 2.5 inch drive is 2 TB.....external drives will be very popular in 2016.

DigitalBridge1-640x474.png

Moving to the Global Foundries 28nm process and Samsung 1 GB memory can reduce peak power about 20 watts. Moving to LPDDR3 and new Xtensa processor in the PS4 southbridge can reduce Standby and IPTV mode power use...I've read that it's possible all this is coming and = the power and weight savings mentioned.

Would be cool if they announced a network-only (non-BD) alternative version at some point.
In that case 1TB should be the starting point imo.

Lol I struggle enough with PSN as it is, removing my physical drive just turn the playstation in to a rental device because then I own jack shit

300 grams lighter is pretty significant so maybe they did switch to an external power brick. I wonder if they revamped the cooling system or just left empty space in the console if that's the case.

Or maybe the 1TB model will just replace the 500GB model and price will remain the same.

Would be a better move I think. Depends on the person I suppose, and I guess it is doable if you're willing to delete games when you need more, even if you think you may want to go back to it, but 500GB definitely wasnt enough for me. Got a 2TB in there, and been awesome so far, ton of games on there I havent actually tried yet and probably won't, so can easily make space if I need to, but I think I have like 800GB left for now.

Definitely not in favour of a network PS4, I don't even see the point. PS4 is selling well, so clearly people are fine with paying for the disc drive and I don't think you can really call the PS4 fat to justify a smaller version at the cost of removing a disc drive. I suppose it would still have appeal. I just don't think it would be so much.

I will never understand this....

The HDD of the PS4 is already replaceable. If you want a bigger drive, just buy a notebook HDD and replace it. It's easy as fuck. Just make the standard PS4 (500GB) cheaper.
People who want a bigger drive, will buy a bigger drive. I have a 2TB HDD and I'm happy.

Just buy a 2TB 2.5" HDD. They are cheap as F right now.
You can swap the PS4 HDD in a minute.

Don't think they'll do a blu-ray less PS4. They do mini-revisions prior to changing the form factor. The numbers lining up for an optical drive is just coincidental, ready to eat crow.

The 1TB model should replace the current PS4's, at a similar price. This would create added value in the eyes of customers, and 500GB models would get "unofficial" clearance sales, further boosting sales numbers.

Why would Sony throw away money like that?

Edit: Although I'm not up to date with current HD prices, surely the cost difference between 500gb and 1tb wouldn't be eclipsed by economies of scale.

Yeah external power brick, or practically any combination of internal changes could be the cause.

This is more an example of Occam's Razor. The weight decrease matches that of a disc drive, the watt decrease matches that of a disc drive, and the amp decrease matches that of a disc drive. Without more evidence, it's most probable the disc drive was removed.

Also this is going off average disc drive specs. If someone knew the exact weight of the PS4's specific drive, then you guys could see if the theory holds up or not.

Yeah but what are the odds of them randomly going with a digital only model?

Yeah, I did that too. 500GB was definitely not enough for me.

Unless they're like $10, then nah, but thanks. I only got the PS4 because I got a stupid good deal on it. Spending more on it kinda defeats the purpose of why I got it.

What's there to understand? For many people, 500GB is woefully inadequate and their only option is to go out and spend $50+ more on improving a blatant bottleneck for them. I can see why some people aren't happy about it.

1GB Samsung chips should reduce the memory drive current needed by something less than half at peak clock. The Global Foundries 28nm high performance process uses less die size which will increase yield reducing price AND result in a slight efficiency increase due to shorter traces inside the chip....all in all a 20 watt savings is possible across the whole console.

I don't understand why anyone is clamoring for a disc-less model. The inclusion of an optical drive doesn't stop the digital only buyer from doing his thing and the lack of a drive means bringing a neutered console to market.

Ohhh, nice. Hopefully getting a PS4 at the end of this year, so a pricedrop or more storage for the same price would be great!

Looks like the bluray drive might have been removed.

It's 300 grams lighter, uses 200 less mA, and uses 20 less watts according to the other image. Those line up practically perfectly with the specs of a disc drive.

If they plan to sell such a device (digital distribution only) they need to sell it at least 100$ cheaper with maybe one year PS+ free as well.

Would retailers want to sell this at all by the way?

Especially when the Physical versions of games are selling more then the Digital ones. by removing the optical drive that effectively cuts the market of games available for that individual to buy. Sony wants people to have access to buy more games, not less.

Also not every region in the world has optimal internet to take advantage of purely a digital only console, especially with games sizes being at the minimum 10GB (Lego Marvel Super Heroes for example) and going all the way up to 65GB. (GTA5)

Having Digital only platform with such huge game sizes just doesn't seem like a sound decision at all.

Sony(and game publishers) likely want to push digital. If they can lock some people into a digital only ecosystem, whether by choice or by ignorance, then they benefit from it.

Well, the cost difference might be negligible for them.

The 1TB model is in line with their digital plans, the 1TB model can allow them to increase the perceived value of the system and draw more customers who are otherwise waiting for a price cut, either through the clearance sales of the 500GB system, or implying there'll be no price cuts in the near future, but hay they will be getting a 1TB model.

Instead of reducing the price by 10-20 dollars which wouldn't create any meaningful affect in sales, they are upgrading the hard disk. Makes total sense to me.

Meh already rocking 2TB in my machine.... come on Sony step it up.

Yup. Glad they are adding a bigger harddrive tho. IMO 1TB shoulda launched with these consoles.

They need to add external storage already.
I have a 2TB in mine and it is filling up pretty fast.

I got my 2TB a few months ago and I'm down to 1TB now. I should be good for the next few years....but I agree. (I will be good because I got some F2P games I dont really play and Destiny Demo I can delete. I will be good because I have some games I can delete....smh...)

Put in a 2TB drive, with external storage support you could have a total of 6TB easy. As of right now the max you get is 2TB. I will gladly take external storage support.

Would love this. Will never use a disc on ps4

Also slimmer and not as loud please

You do realise the scale that they manufacture these consoles on? Even a small increase in component costs has a massive knock on effect in their margins.
They could've just increased the price by like $20 or something for a 1TB drive. Would've still undercut the XB1 plenty without cutting into their margins.

They also buy their parts in wholesale bulk. So they are likely to get a significant cut on the overall price of the drives compared to the individual cost.

Rather then pay $70 to 80 MSRP for each 1TB HDD, it's more likely to be $45 to $50 for a 1000+ drives or whatever supply quota they need to fulfill, especially since they will buy these drives directly from the manufacturer supply and cut through the retail supply chain.

The goal should be to make the PS4 cheap, cheaper, more cheaper.

I understand it for the Xbox One, because you can't replace the internal HDD there.
But for the PS4? "Hey guys, it has 1TB now. Price will remain $399 for quite a while now, or we will even charge $429 for it." Meh!

Don't usually do this, but I'll totally buy a 1TB Uncharted 4 PS4 and keep my launch system too.

Well duh, of course they buy them wholesale. Obvious statement is obvious.

There will still be a price difference between 500gb and 1tb drives.

It's really not as bad as I expected.

I installed a 2tb drive in my system and have installed 32 retail discs, all of the PS+ games, and a boatload of additional digital only titles and still have 900gb free. I purposely installed every possible game in order to see how much space it would actually require and, well, there it is.

I recall something about the discinstalls getting removed automatically after a certain amount of new discs were inserted, or am I just imagining things?

With my 2TB disk only 1.7TB is available (byte to TB conversion and PS4 reserves), so 32 retail discs at an average of 25GB* each would be 800GB and only leave you 900GB as is, without any of the digital ones.

*average disc size taken out of thin air.

Looks like the 500GB stays as well. Who knows, maybe the 1TB SKU will get the $399 price tag while the 500GB gets an official drop to $349.

Also don't overestimate the average Joe, plenty of folks who I work with or live in my area have no clue what the hard disk does in a console, let alone that they know how to replace it. A SKU with a bigger hard drive is something positive not something that should be brushed aside.

The snark isn't necessary. You aren't at GameFAQs.

You brought up the statement that the drives would have a impact of their margins. The fact that they buy their drives wholesale and never pay the MSRP value for the units, means it would have a insignificant impact on their margin if any.

I don't agree with that, though. As an option, that's great. But you talk about the people who will want a bigger HDD as if they are some sort of niche group. As time goes on, I'm pretty sure most people will find 500GB inadequate, if they don't already. So we're talking a large scale of people here. And I don't think it's smart to make your consumers rely on upgrading their PS4's themselves to get adequate storage space.

I'd rather see multiple SKU's, like before. Reduce the price of the 500GB model and make a 1-2TB version the current price.

It's so easy a lobotomized monkey can do it. Also simpler than on PS3.

With the going rate of 1tb drives, both the xbox and ps4 should have shipped with them. They knew that 500gb was going to be a major problem.
