Can anyone read the ui text in The Witcher 3?

The solution is to either sit closer to the TV or get a TV that is appropriate for the viewing distance.
There's also a very real option of buying and playing a different game.

This has served me plenty well with the small number of games I've seen with such awful text sizes or UI problems.

The fact that they thought the original version was acceptable suggests that the devs had little regard for anyone that wasn't playing with a monitor on a desk, or a large TV in a dorm room.

Right. So you're telling me that your cynicism tells you that people never admit their mistakes and never seeks to correct them even after tons of fans ask them to. And this is of course ignoring the fact that, again, they've already said that they're working on fixing it.

Jesus christ.

Only problem with this is that it seemed to be an afterthought. How can anyone have tested this and thought this wasn't a problem unless they only tested on a monitor at a desk?

Because they most definitely just play-tested it on computers. It's not too uncommon at all, especially not for a studio that's invested so much into PC games previously.

40" LED HDTV full 1080p samsung smart... Playing on PS4. I'm sitting 2.5 m from my TV. I can read it, but it wouldn't hurt if the font is a bit bigger.

I have a 38" 1080P tv in my living room with a couch across the room (not that far, could not fit the kinect), and everytime I gotta read some ingredients, I gotta stand up next to it. The font is really bad for me. I dont care for a clean screen in the menus, lemme just read it from afar. Hopefully it can be patch somehow.

Which is strange because in this day and age, there are plenty of PC gamers that run their graphics card to a TV.

This is one of the worst offenders I've come across recently but it's been a growing problem in lots of games over the last few years. I'm sure there's lots of people who's sight isn't prefect who play games and run into problems with fonts and I'd really like font size options to become a thing. I know it might not be that easy to scale but there must be a way, PS4's touchpad for scrolling (it's not that often used in menus) for instance. We expect subtitles for accessibility so we should be able to expect font sizes for accessibility too imo.

Just got this on Xbox at the weekend, and the text size is too small in menus and when looting objects. I sit 6 feet away from a 40" TV, and have not had this problem in other games. My eyesight is -1.75 in each eye, but I wear corrective glasses so that's not the issue. It's a bit ridiculous, as you can clearly tell it has been designed for PC gaming on a monitor at distance of 18 inches, not console gaming on a TV in the living room.

I still would like a bigger TV though, maybe 50" would be the sweet spot...

This is an awful response, and a horrible pressure to put on consumers. Your 40" TV is already very large. It's not you, it's the poorly planned interface.

No problem here. PC hooked up to my 65" plasma and sitting about 15' away. Seems fine to me, tbh, and my vision has only gotten worse over the years. I have large ui setting selected, so not sure if that matters.

Edit: Didn't see it was patched today. Hopefully it's not too big on my screen now. Lol

All text is now just a tiny bit bigger than it was. No slider sadly, and no option to go back to the way it was for those who felt it was already fine.

It's big enough for me now, I tried reading characters bios and entries for the bestiary (the sections I struggled the most with) and it's just the right size for my TV/distance, but I'm not sure it will please everyone, especially those who couldn't read anything at all, because it's a small increase in text size.

It was really small for me before, so this doesn't sound great, but I'll check it out this weekend and hopefully its ok, I really want to play this game

I managed to take a screenshot of the new size in the glossary. PC at 1080p.

Unfortunately subtitles are still the same size btw. The most noticeable increase is probably in the item descriptions, crafting pages, alchemy and such. I think the best course of action at this point for those still struggling would be to try and decrease in some way the distance between them and the TV. It's what I did before the patch and again after the patch today, because after a few hours of playing I feel the text size is actually still too small for me, most of the time anyway.

Yeah, item text and subtitles are small on PS4. Hasn't been too much of a problem for me personally since I sit kinda close to my TV, but I can see why it would be for others.

Can anyone report if the patch really makes a difference?

Yes it does. I sit about 10ft from my TV and I couldn't read shit. I can read it fine now sitting on the couch. I can now pack away the deck chair I had set up in front of my TV.

Got a 40 inch and sit about 4-5 feet away from my TV while the HUD is fine, all other text is still incredibly tiny. I'm honest to God fed up. I know I sound whiny but I refuse to sit closer or change my setup so that I can play this game when I've never had this issue before...Every media outlet was reporting on how the text size was fixed but looking at the changelog its nothing like what was reported which is more the media's fault than anything.

I've never had my eyes hurt this much because I can't read the text and I'm honestly done with this game.

The problem with increasing the font size for subtitles in this game is that often the subtitles carry on one sentence after another with no break at all. With a bigger font you're going to end up with 3, 4 or more lines of subtitles on the screen. The usability isn't going to see an effective increase. It's just a disaster all around. They cheaped out on the timing and line breaking of subtitles as video games often do.

Honestly, this is an issue I've had with modern games which are waaay too keen on using small fonts for 'clean UIs'. Yeah it looks pretty, but my eyesight is garbage and I hate squinting.

That's a huge and common misconception on developers' part. The idea is to make the UI less obtrusive, but by making it tiny they're forcing people to concentrate on it more and spend more time peering at it, therefore actually making it more obtrusive.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. The line breaking is poor. It's not rocket science to do it correctly, it's not even really much extra work. Just lack of awareness that what they're doing doesn't work well. You don't have to look too far afield - DVD, TV etc - to find proper industry standards specifying precisely how many lines there should be (normally 2 max, 3 in exceptional circumstances) and how many characters per line (38).

If you're complying with 38 chars per line and a max of two lines, it's much more difficult to run into UI overlap problems.
