Fallout 4 Officially Revealed for PC, Xbox One, PS4 [Reddit Rumor = Ban]

inb4 "Mod Access Pass, only 14.99!". I think modding shouldn't be used to excuse developer falling short when it comes to technical and/or gameplay design. It's little weird that people give Bethesda pass on janky design and lackluster technical development because "modders will fix their game / make actual game on torso they release".

Absolutely, as much as I love mods, they should NEVER be an excuse to overlook the flaws of the base game.

Ummm, even if it was crossgen is not like they couldnt implement at least SSAO in PS4/X1 (not even talking HBAO or HBAO+). AC games,Far Cry and other open worlds had it implemented last gen.

Zenimax and their shareholders expect this game to sell at least 10 million units (Skyrim sold over 20 million). They had no idea how well consoles that weren't even officially announced at the time would sell. They were probably not even sure if Fallout 4 would launch in 2014 or 2015. From a business perspective of course it makes sense to go cross-gen on a game that absolutely requires a huge install base.

Maybe they regret that now after seeing the amazing sales figures of current gen? Who knows. But they didn't have a crystal ball. The smart money, from a business perspective, from a shareholder's perspective, was to make the game cross-gen back in 2011.

Zenimax don't have shareholders, it's a private company.

I really hope they've changed or updated their gameplay systems. The Oblivion template felt worn thin by the end of last generation.

More than graphics are hurt by cross gen. BioWare talked openly after Inquisition about how they removed features across the board that largely had to do with RAM issues of cross gen.

Oh well. I'm overly enjoying the look at it we got so far.

For what it's worth, Todd Howard mentioned in an interview that the new consoles (specifically their RAM) allowed them to stream building interiors as you approached them, allowing you to enter them without loading screens. Coupled with the rumours that the last-gen versions are being released later, with less features, indicates that Bethesda have leveraged the strength of newer hardware where they can from a gameplay perspective, and that the last gen version will lack more than just a full HD resolution.

Hopefully the visuals get beefed up some more over the next 6 months, but Bethesda games have never really been lookers. Oblivion perhaps, for its time, but then Fallout 3 was aged as hell even when it launched (no shadows, terrible animations, low on-screen NPC counts) compared to the other open world competition like Assassin's Creed (full shadows, fantastic animations, huge crowds).

So 2008, Fallout 3 came out.
What else came out when this groundbreaking game released, with its "awesome for the time" visuals?

Disclamer!
All screenshots are off the internet, some with/without mods, crap/mid/high settings, and other such discrepancies. These are visual norms for "the time", and nothing more.
If you spot a bullshot, make it as such, and be sure to let everyone know I failed you all.

FarCry 2

GTA IV

Visually, it did just fine, but wasn't winning any beauty contests.
If we did the same for games that are coming out this year, for PC and consoles, I am sure there would be a similar "lower standard" look versus fallout 4 and this years games.

I would ask people that have played fallout 3 to uninstall and reinstall the game fresh, no changes other than stock visual settings and tell me fallout 4 looks like fallout 3 with a "minor" bump to visuals.

And please, leave the dog argument alone, you all know some awesome modder will give you "real fur" physics, and all sorts of goodies in under a month of release.

I'm guessing that MS has some sort of marketing deal and/or timed DLC on this one, as the XB1 version is sitting in the front of the set. Am I reading too much into the placement of the various boxes?

Who are you? Are we relegated?

Oh.. and with respect to your question. Yeah. you are probably right.

That and it's been the case for previous Bethesda titles

So apparently some guy who knew about the uncharted collection and skylanders is saying fallout is crossgen, but they're not marketing it like that yet.

it would explain...stuff

Oh fuck please no. Disappointment of the gen so far if true. Fuck graphics, it's the core designs and features that are going to be neutered, making sure that a game two years or more into the next gen isn't doing anything that couldn't be done on 10 year old hardware. Fuck no.

Fallout 3 had no realtime environment shadows, that alone was a visual hamstring compared to contemporaneous games.

Skyrim ended up with like 20m copies, opening in NPD with well over 3m copies iirc. They probably want similar numbers from this. so yeah crossgen it is.

Out of everything I've read the only thing I actually bugs me is if you can't play as a female in the main story. Hopefully that's not true. I can deal with everything else.

I would hate that to the point of being a dealbreaker. I spent hundreds of hours in Fallout 3 and Skyrim playing men AND women. The "roleplaying" aspect there is what kept me coming.

I don't think PS3 has hope of running this. If it does it will probably be some hacked up garbage version like Shadow of Mordor that nobody would want anyway.

Yeah the motivation behind it is not difficult at all to understand. If it is crossgen then I'm hoping that the last-gen versions bomb horribly, sending message to other devs that no, at this point it is no longer worth it. Talking a little hyperbole over here because the thought makes me so frustrated. Finally a new, next-gen fallout game and it would not be the best it could be. Then it is "oh well let's wait for the next one" that will propably come to PS5. I want a fallout 4, not fallout 3.5. Not even talking about visuals. The Witcher 3 really has raised the bar for open world games.

In addition to PC? Probably.

Would it make as much money as they'd like, following Skyrim? Probably not.

Lets not forget Skyrim has hugely inflated numbers because it's been available for years on PC for as little as £3-5.

The current gen install base is more than enough to sustain a title of this size.

F4 is releasing in a post Witcher 3 world, if the game is limited in scope and technically die to being crossgen I expect it will suffer when it comes to review time.

Whether it's cross gen might actually be up in the air depending on reception. And another difference may be the farming out of last gen versions as ports to 2nd party developers.

Lighting and art direction seem great. Textures, animations, models are from what we see a 2009 standard. The tree screenshots look like Red Dead Redemption with a little more foliage.

At least they did not try to bullshot everyone, so there's hope for better footage until release. But I fear that the vanilla won't look great in 2016.

Also being cross-gen in 2016 is not really smart, just look at the numbers of third-party AAA games in 2014, they sold well, the cost/benefit doesn't worth it imo.

I'd be surprised if they still end up releasing a last gen version. It'd make a bit of money sure but that user base is definitely starting to drop off.

Chances are it's so far along in development by this point that they may as well release it anyway and get some small profit for their work, rather than scrapping that version altogether. Sounds like it's a slightly different game to current gen Fallout 4 anyway (loading screens in particular), so it's not like dropping support at this stage would see the current gen version benefiting in any way.

I'm reading all of this thread and reddit and just soaking it all in. Will be nice to get the impressions from the floor at E3 before I commit to any opinion.

Of course, this reddit thread is interesting too: Spoiler Warning

I wonder if this will be a "optimized for Windows 10" game

Someone posted earlier that Gamebryo was looking into Dx12.

So you're saying, it continues to print money years down the line? Sounds like a good deal from an industry that expects all of its sales to be frontloaded.

He's saying it shouldn't be about last gen install base

I feel as if during the shots of actual gameplay (deathclaw, protectron, cities and etc.) it looks much better than when the Wanderer meets the dog. That part seems like its some sort of ass CGI to me.

Yeah, I feel the same from the 1:30 mark it looks like gameplay and it looks a lot better graphically.

If this game plays exactly like Fallout 3 and New Vegas and looks like that, I'll be extremely disappointed after playing The Witcher 3. But I will be okay with the games look if the gameplay pushes the envelope. I will have to wait until E3 before I decide whether or not to give this attention.

Not a fan of the Boston aesthetic unless they make it look very unique. Tired of destroyed cities as a game setting.

That Reddit post smells a bit like bullshit to me. Their "opening" sounds nothing like what we saw in the trailer.

Dude, this has been posted so many times, Nirolak had to post this.

That was posted 11 months ago, in July 2014.

Most of it is based off of this 2013 Kotaku article, with only a couple things changed, such as gender option, and the random DLC schedule plus Naughty Bear people spin-off: http://kotaku.com/leaked-documents-reveal-that-fallout-4-is-real-set-in-1481322956Unless you have something better to back it up, keep it out of the thread please.

Oh interesting. So no gameplay at this year's E3, october 2015 release and and spinoff in 2016.

I liked the sound of the top down manner of playing although that might have been cut in the 11 months since that was posted.

Seems accurate so far though.

Fallout 4 was finally announced. Instead of crying over graphics people should be rejoicing. Plus, visually the game looks stellar. The art direction is beautiful and most importantly can run on current-gen consoles. Both the Xbox One and PS4 are not the powerhouses people perceive them to be.

Back to my fangirl reaction.

the wtf part of that reddit post is Behaviour Interactive making a Fallout spin off...

And you can change your gender after the main storyline is over? Last gen versions ship A YEAR after Fallout 4 current gen releases, so in late 2016? A spin off by Behaviour Interactive? That seems ridiculous. If that's what GAF is getting all of its information from, I am disappointed.

How does it looks good? It could in 2009. It is 2015 for christ sake.
Why does every game have to be a graphical masterpiece? RPGs have never been about graphics and they never should be. A good story, likable characters and a strong musical score makes a great RPG. I don't get the new generation and their constant bitching about graphics, resolutions and frame rate.

don't forget that they are adding Fallout 3 save imports for the last gen versions because that sounds really worth it

Yep the Witcher Wild Hunt delivered some fantastic facial and character models for an open world game. New standards have been set and Bethesda can't get away with the Skyrim level character models anymore.

Funny how in the end Witcher 3 raised the standards, after all the downgrade debate.

CDProject set themselves an impossibly high bar and just barely failed to clear it. Witcher 3 still looks incredible, just not as incredible as some early trailers made it out to be.

Bethesda certainly aren't making that mistake.

Now that graphics are bad I'm kind of hoping for cross gen. It would explain the graphics and restore my faith in Bethesda delivering a true current gen great looking TESVI. Does that make me a bad person?

*assuming TESVI is current gen only

It won't be on last gen.

Besides, Skyrim looked a whole generation better than Oblivion, don't worry too much.
