Awesome, mine says "Estimated Shipping Date: Oct 16, 2015"
I thought i wasn't going to get lucky.

Estimated 5 meters of wireless communications range??

That's horrible!

Are you expecting to take it into your bathroom or what?

What does the steam link do? Couldn't I just use a $5 HDMI cable and get the same or better results? So it's basically for people who want to spend an extra $45 to stream instead of directly connecting via HDMI?

Or am I completely missing something?

It's for people who don't have the space for a deskotp near their TV, don't want to have a desktop enar their TV, don't own/plan on purchasing/have a desire to build a small form factor PC that sists under your TV, yes.

Basically, if your PC, for whatever reason, lives somewhere else than your TV room in your home, and you have no plans or desire to change this, the link allows you to keep your setup, and still be able to play games in your TV room.

It's if you have a gaming PC in one part of the house with a nice monitor or whatever, and you have a big screen TV in the other part of the house and would like to use that to play cross-plat games sometimes without moving your whole tower. Plus it does standard mediaPC stuff like stream movies and things, so if you DL a movie on iTunes or whatever you can watch it on your TV. If you have a smart TV or a media PC already hooked up it's redundant, but a SteamLink is comparable to other options out there.

It's almost as if people have different setups in their house than you do. Crazy I know.

Couchmaster is the only way! Wife uses hers allllllll the time and plays CS:GO from the love seat on our plasma.

However, $50 for the steam controller, vs $200 for a (well-constructed) plastic board with foam pads. Linus really addresses the convenience of having perfect cable routing and build quality though, so tbh I don't regret buying ours.

No thanks. I don't like holding my hand in a mouse position while relaxing. I also hate using wasd on the couch for the same reason. I've tried various tables and they work, but it's just not comfortable.

There is also the issue of not wanting to have to set all that up to play a game. It's annoying. I want to grab the controller and start playing.

This controller is the answer for me.

Steam link also supports xbox 360 wired or with wireless adapter, xbox one wired, and a logitech wireless controller too

lol just realized there's still no PC wireless adapter for Xbox One. Classic.

Indeed. Different strokes. Also a huge price difference

I was always on the fence in regards to the controller considering it looked like it would take some getting used to. I finally got a chance to interact with one at PAX East and I was actually really happy with it. It certainly will take some getting used to, but it was really impressive in my opinion. I will say however that I was surprised at the feedback the controller gave when using the touch pad, I wasn't expecting that at all. All in all I'm definitely in for one AND a Steam Link! :D
I haven't seen anyone else from here on here for awhile (over the course of lurking before creating an account.)

So no headsets whatsoever, wired or wireless?

Well that backfired.

I'd preordered from Valve but as someone on this thread kindly pointed out, the link+controller bundle from GAME works out cheaper than buying from valve (£99 for bundle + £20 steam credit Vs £94.78 for just the bundle from valve)

So I ordered from GAME, and then went into my steam account and requested a refund. Which they did.nand now I have £94.78 steam credit.

Is there any way to get them to actually give me the money back?

I tried this out at pax east. Absolutely hated it. Not that my opinion should sway others, but I couldn't get used to it the way I was comfortable using say a playstation or Xbox controller. It has a weird feel to it. One I couldn't see being used by myself.

I have placed a pre-order with game. I am wondering if I should switch to preordering directly with valve. If you pre-order via steam will you still be able to get the controller in October?
If so I don't see any reason to keep my game pre-order as they pointlessly require you to spend an extra £20 on steam credit.

They've already mentioned it takes about two hours to get used to it.

There's a learning curve, it's not instant pick-up-and-play in the same way that any analog-stick-based controller is pick-up-and-play.

Should have worked

You will receive the refund in Steam Wallet funds or through the same payment method you used to make the purchase. If, for any reason, Steam is unable to issue a refund via your initial payment method, your Steam Wallet will be credited the full amount. (Some payment methods available through Steam in your country may not support refunding a purchase back to the original payment method. Click here for a full list

Anyone have screenshots of what their controller configuration/calibration screens look like?

XDvlU8t.jpg

One thing everyone seems to miss? See the gyration logo in the middle of the screen? These things have imus inside. You know the motion control fine tune controls in stuff like splatoon or uncharted? You can make every game have those if you want.

I've tried streaming from my PC to my Mac over my network, and FPS' feel sluggish. I gave Dirty Bomb a try just now and it wasn't so hot.

Does anyone know if I connect the SteamLink to a 4k TV, would that introduce extra latency due to the TV having to scale from 1080p to its native 3840x2160 resolution?

Is there footage of high level FPS played with the steam controller?

Because as much as you guys swear it isn't there, there's still that lift and drag action of the thumb that's making it look janky as hell. It's like a hybrid between a Lenovo clit-mouse and a laptop trackpad.

is lift and drag something you actually pay attention to when you do that with a mouse?

Valve also put that on the store page

Gyroscope and accelerometer sensors enabling tilt-to-steer racing wheel functionality and other motion-controlled input

but not everyone reads that :p

If your tv is latent, then yes. Most tvs have game modes, though.

When you stream to another pc, you can use usb headsets on them and it works. I use a skull candy wireless headset just fine. They will undoubtedly work on the steam link too.

Does it respect a hub to increase the number of USB ports from 3? What kind of power output do the USB ports have?

The Leo Bodnar tool most people use only outputs 1080 so should be the same as measured

I don't really see that at all. It's primary focus is replicating the keyboard and mouse experience on a controller. The only thing that could be argued that it's "missing" compared to the mouse and keyboard are all of the keys of the keyboard (if you use a shit load of macros or stuff like that), and if I remember right you can program one of the touchpads to simulate button presses (up on d-pad=flashlight on, down=crouch, etc.). Like people who have tried it have said, these are a lot more advanced than shitty laptop touchpads.

You've got an analog stick for movement (better than WASD, IMO), right track pad for mouse look (heavily customizable to your preference of sensitivity and play style), triggers and buttons on the back, 4 face buttons on the front, and a second touch pad for whatever you want (from what I've heard).

I'm sure there are plenty of games (specifically console ports) that will still probably play better with a normal controller, but this controller seems like the perfect solution for playing KB+M games in your living room (RTS, city building, shooters, etc.). And console ports have been getting better PC ports than in the past with better KB+M support, so those games will probably play exactly as well, if not better than with a normal controller (faster camera control, easier button customization, buttons on the back of the controller).
This controller is really all about the track pad. A track pad...

Against KB+M, you'll never have as much control over a track pad as you would a mouse.

Against gamepads, a second analogue is still more ideal for simply panning cameras. The d-pad also looks pretty clunky and with weird positioning.

Nah I was looking for the screens that would help create a new controller profile, where we can adjust deadband, sensitivity, haptic feedback, create new button mappings etc.

That is the screen. It isnt a profile really, it is per game settings. Not universal. When you scroll in steam to the "launch game" menu, a new screen appears called "controller." Inside are configurations pulled from the net, with the top ones being selected by most used. At the very top, you can redefine which takes you to that screen. When you exit the screen, it asks if you want to save or not, and if you save, you give it a ne then select either private use or to publish it for others.

When you select the touchpads in the above menu, a bevy of options appear.

That part in the pic where it says "RS Click," is it pointing only at that tiny ring around the edge? It's that sensitive/accurate?

Not my problem. Want the couch? Play games designed for gamepads. Want to play games made for mouse? Play on a desk, or settle for a controller like that, but be ready to have problems.

Use whatever the hell you want, wherever you want. I've used a wireless keyboard and mouse from my couch with no issues. I'll be getting this as well, and honestly it will just come down to a per title basis for me.

Pure upscaling doesn't introduce much latency. It's all the postprocessing beyond that that does. As long as you are using game mode or PC mode, this shouldn't be a problem. This is assuming you have a 4K TV with low latency to begin with. Most 4K TVs prior to 2015 have terrible latency.

So, uh, if I use a Mayflash adapter to use a Wii U Pro Controller on my PC, will I be able to run that from the PC while streaming with the Steam Link or does the control method have to run out of Steam Link?

Why does it feel like some people are threatened by this controller? So bizarre to see posters easily write it off before even trying it or waiting for impressions post launch.

Keyboard and Mouse elitists, Dualshock elitists, and Xbox controller elitists. They all hate change.

It doesn't look like you can player FPS games efficiently with this controller, right? That right pad that acts like a flat analog doesn't really, as far as I can tell, or am I wrong? Pulling to the edge in any direction and holding your finger there on that right pad will not cause the camera to continue spinning, from what I can see, therefore the player has to constantly put his or her finger back to the center and pull toward the same direction to continue the camera flow.

In that screen it is saying depressing the entire touch pad will act like clicking the right stick on an xbox pad. The touch pads sit on giant, physical buttons.

The circle below indicates they have divided the right pad up into 4 virtual buttons, and the button in the "a" position is set.

The ring you are asking about indeed can be set independently. You can assign a modifier, as an example, so if you are touching the edge of the pad, it will hold down shift.

The pads are high resolution, they have very high accuracy and sensitivity.
