Tournament Information:
The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup will be the seventh FIFA Women's World Cup, the quadrennial international women's football world championship tournament. In March 2011, Canada won the right to host the event, the first time the country will host the tournament and the third time it has been in North America. The tournament will be held from 6 June to 5 July 2015.

The tournament will use the Hawk-Eye system as goal-line technology for the first time and will also be the first Women's World Cup to be played on artificial turf.

Group Stage Ranking Process:
Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat. The winners and runners-up from each group, as well as the best four third-placed teams, will qualify for the first round of the knockout stage.

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:

  1. points obtained in all group matches;
  2. goal difference in all group matches;
  3. number of goals scored in all group matches;
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:

  1. points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
  2. goal difference in the group matches between the teams concerned;
  3. number of goals scored in the group matches between the teams concerned;
  4. drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Aren't the PanAm games in Toronto too now? Could be because of scheduling.

Eh it's been so long I lost track.

Potential conflict with the PanAm games is exactly why Toronto isn't hosting games.

Transitioning from the Women's World Cup to the PanAm games is probably too short a time.

I'm looking forward to this.

And it's ridiculous that there aren't any games in Toronto. Nobody gives a damn about the Pan Am Games.

Will watch for Morgan.

GO USA!

I believe that we will win!

Edit: Why are they playing on artificial turf? WTF? That's got to hurt.

I am pumped. The 2011 Tournament was great. France scares me. They were good then, and they were just kids. Now they have experience. I hope the US can avoid them as long as possible.

Any information on what websites will be legally streaming the games?

I don't think China's had a good team since that 1999 Cup, have they?

Fox Sports Go will be streaming every game in the US.

Thanks.

I actually think the Swedish team might be a real danger, just because Pia is their coach now and she knows all about the US team. Kind of a scouting advantage there, ya know?

If anything, I hope this raises awareness of obscure Canadian cities :p

Heck, let me throw in some trivia about the host cities, just in case someone here ends up on Jeopardy. From East to West:

Moncton, New Brunswick
- Moncton was the cultural center of the Acadians

Montreal, Quebec
- In 1992, Montreal’s velodrome, once used in the Olympic Games, was transformed into an environmental biodome

Ottawa, Ontario
- The Dutch royal family took refuge in Ottawa during WWII, and Princess Margriet was born in this capital

Winnipeg, Manitoba
- Winnie-the-Pooh was named after a bear owned by a WWI soldier from Winnipeg

Edmonton, Alberta
- Edmontosaurus (dinosaur), discovered in Alberta in 1917, was almost defenseless and was preyed upon by the T-rex

Vancouver, British Columbia
- Vancouver banned doorknobs in new housing; levers are easier on the arthritic hands of an aging populace

Another fun fact:

Canada is hosting the women’s tournament this year because nobody else wanted to. Which is pretty sad. On the bright side, that means FIFA didn’t get any bribes for it. Well, maybe a few tankers of maple syrup, who knows.

Thanks for the OT!

COME ON YOU AMERICAS!

We're not gonna do very well, tbh. But I'll be watching and rooting for the USWNT!

The USWNT is one of the best women's soccer teams in the world. If they don't win the whole thing it'll be shocking.

EDIT: I'm looking through the primer someone else posted and since when has the USWNT been known as Khaleesi?

There's a reason it's a screencap from wikipedia. It's just a funny joke someone edited in

That's what I thought, though given how stacked the team is I wouldn't be surprised to hear that was an actual nickname.

Hoping for US to pull it off this time but fivethirtyeight getting back into the prediction game after last year is pretty funny. Didn't they have Brazil as like 80-90% favorites?

The Brazil team which went into 2014 was a far cry from the greats of the past but they had what was supposed to be an overwhelming home field advantage. The prediction wasn't awful, Brazil's shocking once-in-a-lifetime collapse against Germany was.

Anybody that understood the game knew that team wasn't going anywhere, doesn't matter if they played in Brazil or on the moon.

Eh, we've been pretty crappy lately, actually. I think we'll make it to the semi's, but really don't think we'll win it all. Would love to be proved wrong, though!

I'll probably watch most of the matches, fortunately it's in my own country, so time zones won't be an issue like almost every other international soccer competition ever.
