Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

Sometimes NeoGAF is really depressing with all of you complaining all the time.

IMO they are compensating us with all the great news about free coop online, ton of maps and free DLC, for me this is not that bad, i always play online.

Take it easy guys.

I hate playing online together in halo instead of playing on a couch with friends. Loses all of the magic. This is bullshit.

People have the right to be upset that a feature that's been there for a long time was taken out. That being said, the rest of the news today was fuckin awesome so... we will live.

Halo "became known" for different things to different people. I played a decent amount of local co-op in Halo 1, 2, 3 and Reach. I have never really defined this series by the campaign, but plenty of people play these games primarily for the campaign and barely touch the multiplayer.

This is what happens when you remove long standing features from a series. People complain. It's not "faux outrage"... for some people it IS a big deal.

Obviously not enough people to make it worth keeping. 343 are pushing for 1080/60. That would be guaranteed not possible on this console if split/screen had to be taken into account.

I in fact do.

For Halo 2, you could pay a fee to gain instant access or wait roughly two months for them to be publicly released for free. During that time, there were a few game modes you couldn't play, but unlike more recent games, this didn't hamper your play experience. The gametypes that were restricted tended to be the more competitive modes (ex. Hardcore).

If you could pay a fee to access maps, they weren't free. The basic definition of free is not present in what you just said.

Split-screen practically always sacrifices fidelity while playing in split-screen.

Exactly so get rid of it, or add a system link feature. No need for the game to run like dogshit, when a buddy of mine and I are just gonna complain about the performance..Like I said Split screen is great, but not at the cost of any drastic performance hits. Judging by the in game models, and 60fps, it looks like they really want to push the X1 hardware s let them without having to cut back on anything within their vision. Its sucks, but I'm not gonna cry about that shit...

Yeah, I understand they have limited resources etc so maybe the time is better spent elsewhere. No one would really complain if the frame rate dropped in split screen campaign though... it's to be expected.

Really I'm just saying that some people being legitimately upset about this shouldn't be surprising.

We don't know the game's scope yet. I am not so sure it is as easy as moving some sliders to low...

I loved playing 3 player online MP with my 2 buddies back in the day. Shame its gone but if these games are aiming for 1080P resolution and 60FPS, there is no way they can have co-op on the same screen unless everything gets dropped or some cross gen game.

Games like COD can get away with it due to its simplistic graphics but Halo 5 seems like a top tier effort in general by 343.

I've been over split screen ever since I didn't have to use it. I'll be totally okay with not using a scrunched up quarter of my screen and enjoying beautiful full-screen online Co-op instead.

Map packs were free. This didn't change until 343 was introduced.

So Halo 3, Halo Wars, Halo Reach don't count or set a precedent?

You weren't required to pay a fee after two months.

You made an assumption. You were wrong. Get over it.

So the price of Titanfalls DLC suddenly doesn't count to my wallet, because it eventually became free? That's some ass logic.

You took the one negative from all the positive in that extensive article and made a thread. You didn't even do the article Justice by giving any context

It's not a graphics / framerate / resolution thing.

Single player can be 1080p 60 fps and look amazing. Split screen can be 720p, split into 2 and run at 25fps - one does not affect the other.

What split screen can do is affect the design of single player levels. In previous Halo games if you were playing co-op the 2 players had to be in the same area. You could never split the players up too far, so missions had to be designed with that limitation in mind. Otherwise you might end up with players constantly beaming to each other at really annoying moments.

In Halo 3 there's a mission where 3 teams split up and attack 3 separate towers. But in co-op both player must stick together and attack the same tower. In theory, now that Halo 5 has dropped split screen co-op, you could send 4 players to 4 separate locations across a vast area. Far bigger than anything seen in previous games without having to beam to each other.

If that's the reason they took out split screen co-op, then I'll look forward to playing Halo 5's new larger, more epic missions. And I'll keep hassling 343 to keep making improvements to the framerate on the split screen campaigns on the Master Chief Collection to get my couch co-op fix.

Seriously, if they continue to improve the Master Chief Collection and then add Reach at a later date, I'll have 6 Halo co-op campaigns to play with a buddy on my couch. At that point I can forgive Halo 5 dropping the feature.

Thing is, that for many, only the split-screen co-op was an option, giving the fact how bad the lag is for the previous entries. If they fix that, I will be happy.

Yeah but that's a pretty big negative. For a lot of people it's the determining factor on whether or not they will buy the game. I certainly don't plan to if it doesn't have local split screen

What. The higher the intended framerate/resolution for single player, the easier the game is for the system to run, therefore the easier it is to run split-screen.

Or how about keep the feature in and let the players decide.

Its a shame, some of my greatest ties with Halo were split screen. I still play campaign/firefight Reach and Halo 3 with my friends.

Now only Call of Duty has dedicated multiplayer co op :(

You make an interesting point on the second part but on the first part I think you are wrong.

The reason they are dropping couch co-op of 3+ is because it takes lots of resources to get it to run. They rather cut it than offer a shitty version on MP/Co-op.

Single player and Co-op can be 2 separate "games" like that Medal of Honor last gen game where SP was 30FPS and MP was 60FPS. (or the other way around) Whatever the case, its makes for shitty game overall because you are playing 2 different games in one package. Makes for a sloppy package.

Having a SP at 1080P/60 and then Co-op be 720P/25FPS? That would be major blow back from the community and would get points taken from reviews.

I dont think it has anything to do with them trying to "give more freedom" to players but more like "well we cant run 3 or 4 player split screen without running at 15FPS so lets cut it".

Weird because although halo 1 was magical with split screen as I spent countless hours lugging 4 Tvs around happy as can be. When Halo 2 came out my entire group of friends asked why would we ever want to do that again? Haven't used split screen since and didn't even know it was offered in reach and 4

Yes but it's gaf so this thread is actually much longer than the news one.

Anyway yes, it's a bummer but 60fps had to take precedence. It's not just aesthetics- the entire simulation is built on that framerate.

C'mon man. Negative threads will ALWAYS get more posts than positive ones. Look at the shit that went on in the Fallout 4 thread, blew up once people started complaining.

I guess I won't be picking up the new Halo then. I only play Halo these days because of the split screen coop. It's kind of a tradition to marathon through the game when my out of state friend is visiting. Take away the coop and the game is useless to me.

You understand how you could remedy this, right?

Lots of hyperbole in this thread.

Very true. based on both those threads there are some people who have sworn of both Fallout 4 and Halo 5. Cant imagine doing that myself.

It seems strange to me. Why would someone flat out not buy this game because an antiquated late 90s feature isn't included? Aren't you buying the game in the first place because the game is good?

I mean if people are going to abandon Halo 5 simply over that, then their game libraries must be awfully barren.

I agree with this 100%. It's hilarious how because one feature that has no impact in the overall quality of the game is automatically a "OMG no split screen?? Halo is no longer Halo!" seriously? Look at everything else they're offering. Look at the bigger picture! The days of playing split screen will soon die out completely.

Playing games with friends in the same room is an 'antiquated 90s feature"!?

Oh boy...i feel old.

These people are in the minority. Do you not think 343 isn't collecting data on what features are used and what aren't? It's pretty obvious splitscreen is a dying/dead feature used by the minority.

lol, yeah because thats what 343 does, listens to the feedback of a community they have been trying to dump. Give me a break.

343 is like the anti Halo.

Again, how would this impact you unless you played it splitscreen? The single player experience is not impacted by the splitscreen experience.

This 2015 not 2001-2007 where split screen is really popular. PSN and Xbox Live is so big that they (and other developers) will probably realize split screen isn't worth the resources anymore.

343i seems to be really trying with this game.

You're the anti343

Why would split screen die out completely? Do you see a future where people never interact except through the Internet? Or are we all supposed to bring a TV and console to our friend's house whenever we want to play a game together? 343 even broke LAN games in MCC by making them rely on their crappy online infrastructure, when I brought my Xbox to my friends house to play on a second TV we kept getting our online party dissolved or teams switched and other such issues.

Anyway the solution if you like playing with your friends is buy a Wii u as it's clear that ps4/Xbox devs are focused on online multiplayer only (Which they can charge a subscription for, it's good business too - sell more consoles and copies of the game and a subscription). I won't be surprised at all if halo 6 gets rid of split screen modes entirely.

This sucks...I've played all of the Halos co-op with my son and we were both looking forward to 5. I love the Halo series and one of the biggest things about Halo was being able to play splitscreen with a friend/relative.

343 really doesn't seem to be in touch with the things that made Halo special for a lot of us.

There it is. Thanks for the rationale :)

I agree 60FPS should take priority. Unfortunately, the goalposts keep on moving.

Sad...

I won't miss it in all honesty.

But what I truly find amazing, is the fact that a negative halo 5 thread gets more posts than a positive one that lists all the good points!

How is that even possible?
