Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

Have neither of you read the posts in this thread? There are people that grew up with Halo split screen campaign being a big thing between them and their family or friends. Is it so hard to imagine the removal of this feature being a big blow to them?

'Antiquated late 90s feature'; 'has not impact in the overall quality' are hugely insulting and devoid of any context whatsoever. We should all be online and not have any actual face to face interation with real people I guess?

I completely understand if you see no value in that feature, but you don't get to decide what is or isn't objectively valuable for everyone else.

This. Regardless of the fact that Halo became well-known for couch co-op and LAN parties, if the feature does not directly affect the individual, everyone else must be over-exaggerating.

If my username doesn't convey the fact enough that I love the Halo series, then I'd have to point to the innumerable hours spent in multiplayer AND campaign. I bought an Xbone for MCC and eventually Halo 5. Now this news. While the new information in the GI article is wonderful (Blue Team!!!!), I can't reconcile myself with the removal of local co-op. Not when I use video games as a way to spend time with the boyfriend, and even before that, grew up playing local co-op Halo with my father and cousins.

Fuck you too 343i. There's other games this season, I'll just Redbox this shit instead.

I would argue that the people that have been with halo from the beginning would be the ones that don't really care.
I've been with Halo from the beginning. I care. I mean I'm not going to rip my shirt and fall to my knees in despair over this, but it was a nice feature that a lot of us appreciated having there.

I get that it's not a big deal to some folks and that's fine, but I don't understand why they have to be so dickish about it. This isn't directed at you in particular, but we have people accusing others of not being "true fans, having "fake agendas," or being childish whiners. I mean, really?

lol rip Halo. I only ever played campaign split screen with other people. It's way more fun that way. 343 are out of touch.

you'd think that the more powerful the consoles get, the easier it should be to render multiple views at once. shows how fucked up the industry's priorities are.

Kids don't go to each others houses to play games anymore. They log in to play online together. And publishers would rather sell 2-4 copies of a game instead of just 1 so that 2-4 friends can play together.

I hate it too.

I want a massive over the top halo campaign. 343 wouldnt just pointlessly cut a feature like this. Its almost 100% due to time vs the vision they have for the campaign. I am fine with trading split screen for giving the campaign giant interactive levels with more A.I & whatever else. I have always wanted a bigger campaign out of halo.

Really is unfortunate how much discussion this is getting vs the amazing other news :/
Is that the thing we are going to get? I also want another Halo that features Halo 1-size levels and arenas....but if Halo 4 is any indicator then they are not heading that way.

All of the outrage! Halo 5 will still sell a bazillion copies. MP will live much longer with this game due to the free DLC and thus people will stay attached to their game longer.

The GI article discusses changes made to the game like branching paths in the campaign and multiple ways to complete your objective. I think it's fair to say H4 won't be a good indicator.

Couch co-op feels so much better than any kind of online co-op.
Sure, the small screen is a bit meh but as long as the game's good, it is a minor thing.

(Naturally local LAN is as good, and perhaps even better but not many have TVs for everyone, and transporting them is unfeasible.)

Well equally, I don't think there's a strong case for what you're saying either. You say people aren't bothered/upset but you only have to skim through the posts in this thread to see that people are considering not getting the game because of this. The fact this thread is much longer than the one talking about the 'amazing' new features says it all really.

Are you seriously using post counts from 2 neogaf threads as evidence for your argument?

it's literally the ONLY way i've played halo. i'm not a big enough fan to play them solo, and not interested in competative MP. couch co-op with my best friend was some of the most fun gaming experiences of my life... same for gears of war. if that too has no split screen i'll be equally as pissed off.

YES ! That's the same for me. The only Halo I've played through solo is the first one. I played through the first, the second, and the fourth episode in split-screen co-op.

I played Halo 4 online MP only 2 hours, and it was in splitscreen !

Why is it so hard to understand to some people ? I like playing co-op with a friend while drinking a couple of beers and make stupid jokes about the game's characters.
That's why I'm playing Gears of War Judgment currently with this guy even though I don't find the game that good and I would certainly not play it alone.

Coop splitscreen is fun to me and others, we are just saying we're disappointed and we won't play the game because that's what we were looking for, we're not haters or whatever.

That does not mean that path A and B are not corridors. We will see...

Did all you people play halo splitscreen just because there was splitscreen? No I don't think so, you played splitscreen because the game itself was fun. Removing splitscreen doesn't remove the fun out of the game it just changes the way you play with a friend, instead of being able to play on the same tv, you'll now need two. But the bottomline is, the fun is still there it's isn't gone because splitscreen is gone. This is being blown way out of proportion. Yes it sucks it's gone but the game will still be as much fun as the others

No. Just using it to point out there are clearly a lot of people who want the feature to remain in the game, while you believed the opposite.

But really, I don't give a shit. I've never owned a Halo game and have no intention of getting an Xbox One or Halo 5. I was just amazed that in this day and age game developers are being as lazy as ever on a franchise as big as Halo.

Mmmm, I'm not so sure it gets easier when you consider what is being drawn.

I'm not surprised, though, after the severe performance issues the Master Chief Collection faced in split-screen.

This makes me sad :(

I have completed every single Halo initially by playing co-op with my mate from school - it was a tradition and one we had already planned to enjoy for Halo 5. It was, in fact, going to be the point at which I picked up an Xbox One. I get most people play online now, and that's great, but playing together on the same couch is a very different, it's something I will miss. As an aside, it was also one of the last few FPS games I can recall where you could play together, rather than against each other on one machine. My GF's dad recently got a 360 and I dropped round a bunch of games - including Halo. We had much more fun playing that together than we did CoD, where it was just the two of us running in circles around a map against each other ...

I really don't see a justifiable reason to cut it. The 'resources' it would require to simply FPS cap it, drop resolution or textures / particles etc to ensure it played acceptably in co-op 90% of the time, is negligible. I certainly don't believe it wouldn't have affected the single player experience.

Chalk me up as one who believes co-op campaign was one of the things that made Halo, 'Halo'. In fact, unless my memory is failing me, when Halo and the Xbox launched, Xbox Live wasn't ready ... Co-op and four player split screen, and to a lesser extent system link, were how people enjoyed this game together. In all scenarios, anyhow, they were local MP.

Yes but it's gaf so this thread is actually much longer than the news one.

Anyway yes, it's a bummer but 60fps had to take precedence. It's not just aesthetics- the entire simulation is built on that framerate.
Holo lense and/or VR support in Halo 5 confirmed.

For goodness sake stinkles you've ruined MS E3 big secret. For shame.
For.
Shame.

There sure are a lot of people on gaf who wont need to spend their hard earned cash on that XB1 they were so close to buying because of this one game, phew!

/s (sort of).

EDIT: My son and I play split screen the odd time, but prefer to play on our seperate machines so this loss of this isn't massive. I can see why it's sad for some, but it shouldn't be the be all and end all, the reaction is somewhat over the top.

And that's the reason I never did it. It was super jarring to me and I could never properly focus and concentrate on my side of the screen. I did however always enjoyed the online co-op and in that regard I'm super glad they got rid of the Gold requirement to play online co-op. That being said I can totally understand people being upset especially if they used the feature alot although some of the reactions are a bit overboard imo.

Id like to know how many people complaining about the removal of split screen coop actually intended to play the game split screen.

I know halo was known for this. I loved it. I cant even guess how many hours ive played splitscreen in past halo games.

But people really dont play splitscreen anymore. its just super rare. And its a bummer. But we've seen data on splitscreen before, its getting rarer and rarer.

I fully intended to do at least one full playthrough with the fiancé (by then wife) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh well, yet another game I'll play solo when she's asleep.
Doesn't bother me, everyone is online now. Being an adult it's easier finding time slots to play with a friend online; it doesn't require travel and booking a whole evening. Just send a text and ask if they wanna meet up online and play for an hour or two!
I'm sitting here, cold-sober, contemplating buying a second XBONE for the bedroom.

Microsoft, you win again! I guess!

People complaining about this seems silly to me. Halo was one of the last holdouts for split screen gaming. It vanished from most racers and other fps years ago. The announcement for new features actually got me more interested. The old "don't change anything" was getting stale!

BTW is the game 60fps?

Some responses here, it can't be that hard to differentiate the free maps and what not from a now missing feature and it shouldn't be that hard to understand that this does not make the situation better in any shape or form for people that do not care about free stuff as it doesn't help the issue.

I think the free stuff stems from the over whelming competition. I much rather have split screen hanging with a friend then give squad mates "directions"

Of course some are disappointed but this is a natural evolution, everyone plays online nowadays.
What if I told you just as many people don't play online.

They are targeting 60fps, instead of the 30 from the previous entries.

For me it's the right call. Ever since 3 I only played coop online anyway, better scrap the feature and deliver a better looking game (because even when playing alone, if the game is design to support split screen it takes a toll on the graphics) that controls better.

I don't understand this everybody's online sentiment now. I understand GAF's average age is a little higher but there is a generation out there that could be growing up with couch co-op too and having a ton of fun. Also another reason everybody's online now is because it was taken out of games. I sincerely believe it wasn't a lack of demand that made it go away but rather developers not wanting to sacrifice any fidelity or man-hours to make it happen. Couch co-op is some of the most fun you can have and people saying it doesn't matter need to look at the page count here.

I understand, it does suck that split screen is gone. It just seems (particularly on GAF) that this is much more of a serious problem than it really is. I get that it may be a deal breaker for some people, but this massive thread doesn't really put it into perspective, especially compared to the minimal outcry in other communities.

I'm having trouble understanding those who are saying this isn't a bad thing. Growing up, I played the first bunch of Halo's split screen with my brother. More recently, I played through all of MCC with my girlfriend. Playing split screen isn't something you grew out of from the 90s, its what you do when you live with someone else who enjoys gaming.

Now if we want to co-op, we need to cough up an extra £300 for a console and £40 for an extra copy of the game. How some people can't see that is a major blow to others I don't know. I'm still day one and I'm not sure anything could kill my Halo 5 hype, but it is a blow, AND it'll be a massive bummer to those who don't read online forums and don't find out until they load the game up they can't split screen the campaign.

People are drawn to controversy. And negative MS/MS-exclusive news gets plenty of attention round these parts. The post count you described is heavily biased and no true indicator in any shape or form.

This doesn't add to the discussion.

With the massive sales of halo 4 and the good legs of MCC, not to mention the huge halo OT here on GAF, I would say halo is without a doubt still a thing.
Not sure if super serious?

This does make me wonder, when whomever show cases the new call of duty and Battlefront, will the split screen in those games be made more of a bigger deal?

We will find out more in less than a week though.

R.I.P. indeed.

Split screen Halo is a staple in my group of friends. I know split screen gaming has been going away little by little over time, but it really saddens me that a family with more than one kid cant enjoy multiplayer Halo (or anything sans Nintendo really) together unless each kid has an Xbox One, so I guess it's just each kid taking turns playing online for future generations and no co-op or versus in the same household amongst friends or family members. I don't know, a kid saying "Hey Dave, want to come over and take turns playing Halo against people online" has less of an impact than "Hey Dave, want to come over and play some Halo together?" (any other game that no longer has local play applies as well).

Also, I have played split screen co-op with friends and more recently my wife since the very first Halo, and to this day we still hold Halo LAN parties several times a year. And to those who say that it isn't feasible bringing all those people and TVs together and playing online solves that just don't understand why its a huge punch in the gut for those of us who do this still.

When we play LAN parties, we only hook up 4 TVs, and have the screen split 4 ways on each, and most of the people who play don't have their own copies of the game or even an xbox of their own, but they still look forward to getting together and playing regularly over the years. Halo allowing split screen has easily allowed us to have 16 player matches with simple setup. All those people who used to attend our LAN parties are not going to be buying their own Xbox Ones now to play this, save for a few, so this is just going to put an end to future Halos being a part of our get togethers.

I am still looking forward to the campaign and multiplayer will probably be fun online, but understand that Halo established itself as a series with so many ways to enjoy it that these aren't just little changes and we can say "who cares?", this is a fundamental loss for the series.

I'd say 75% of my Halo experience has been couch co-op with friends. I was going to buy a Xbone for Halo 5 with one of the main attractions being able to hang out and play with my roommates/friends. Oh well.

Everyone poo-pooing couch co-op really needs to give it a go. It is objectively better. My friends and I still go through the hassle of doing LAN parties.

Well at least we can always hook up the old systems, right?

Things have to move on. I bet way more people would want more maps than a shitty split screen experience.

God when will the whiners of the internet ever grow up.

says someone whining over us whining over a bog standard feature that should be in every FPS ever.

Couch CoOp is fantastic and Halo with my lad in splitscreen is some of the best fun out there, and i feel sorry for these people with no friends or family to play with.

Things have too move on? really.. this is moving backwards.
shitty experience? just downright fuck off.

More maps? in my experience of 343i maps there shit anyway, but in what fucking world is taking away splitscreen going to manifest maps, are map designers the guys who work on the splitscreen options?

People defending this decision are seriously fucked in the head.
"options i dont use are useless waaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

Total bullshit, me and my fiance have beaten every halo game in split screen co-op. im not buying another fucking xbox so we can beat it together again.

If you don't have an Xbox One, don't even know whether achievements are checked like, why are you even in the thread arguing?

Err because i dont know.. maybe as a Halo fan i was going to BUY a xbox one for it?
I know right "fucking madness"

nah man, we love playing them together, usually beat them in 1 day, on easy of course. and on top of that i probably play a good 50 mp matches with a friend on online split screen.

sorry i was been sarcastic to a previous post.

Couch CoOp is brilliant fun.

I'd like to know the story behind this.

Anyway, I'm a long time halo fan, regular at HaloGAF for a few years. Lack of splitscreen won't really affect me as my IRL friends (and many of my internet friends...) have moved on from Halo due to the last 2/3 disappointing releases. So PERSONALLY, I think I'd rather have a better resolution and high, stable framefrate and more power to do cool shit in the game.

However I understand that that splitscreen has been a classic way to play Halo. Many people who bought MCC didn't even care about the *broken* multiplayer, they just wanted to play through the campaigns again and a lot of the times it was on splitscreen.

Unfortunately the gaming landscape is changing. Losing some features that were standard on old consoles is sad, but the tradeoffs are worth it.

I think there are game that are better suited for fun splitscreen play. The only game me and my friends play splitscreen is FIFA and occasionally some gamecube stuff. You can make "party" games that would be a lot more fun with others than Halo. I still wanna play #Idarb locally with 4 players.
