That just looks like Mark Cerny is holding a gun against the back of his skull, he's got the look of a killer.

I've heard that the originals didn't really age well in terms of gameplay, wouldn't that mean a remaster would probably do more harm than good?

I'm going to entertain that this is even a possibility for a moment.

A remake would be more feasible. The originals' controls and loading screens would be a huge turn off for modern open-world fans. Streamlining the movement/camera and making the cities into seamless transitions would do a lot towards making them more palatable to people who grew up playing GTA 3 and its children.

Releasing at $60 retail would probably be a mistake. A series of $10-$15 digital chapters would make those less hesitant more willing to give the game/series a try.

Yeah but it didn't help Sega just bungled the Saturn launch. Gamecube didn't exactly set the world on fire either. DVD helped the PS2 immensely with people who never really played games either.

Agreed with this as well. But the "needed DVD" argument is far too simplistic (and amateur journalism that focused on just that).

It was business decisions that weighed much heavier, and failed marketing to capitalize on being a "pure games" machine.

It's truly insane how long this hope float has been going on. I remember feeling a sense of immense longing for seeing the series story continue as the credits for the first one played. Not too many games have given me that kind of feeling, Yu can definitely tell a compelling saga. I do hope he gets to finish it one day. Just bonkers thinking how much time has elapsed between the first game's US release and today. I think I was more obsessed with og Shenmue release back in the day than probably any other game before or since. The sequel was the only game I ever imported even though I knew fuck all of what was being said or written. Just wanted to continue exploring the world. I remember being in awe of the character gallery the second one had that let you rotate higher poly models of the game characters. Good stuff.

The originals have aged pretty poorly in almost every sense (controls, gameplay, pacing, script, voice acting).

To make the series appealing to a modern audience you would pretty much have to remake Shenmue from the ground up. Adventure-style gameplay where you talk to a bunch of poorly-voiced NPCs until you hit the right one is not really going to fly. The game's world that seemed immaculate, detailed and immesne at the time would be a tiny hallway by comparison to today's titles.

Oh for sure. I truly don't believe it would have been a simple thing as in "Just drop it in." Hell, seeing how Sega almost went fully under with the Dreamcast is it was, the drive might have been worse for them if it still didn't do as well. It's one of those things that is fascinating to think about and how it might have changed things like if Nintendo didn't go with cartridges on the N64.

The Jet Set Radio remaster reworked the controls so that you could control the camera with the right thumbstick; something that you couldn't do in the original. There might have been other adjustments made, I'm not sure. Point being, a remaster would feasibly allow for the necessary improvements to be made I'd imagine. Shorten the loading times, improve the controls, so on and so forth. Depends on how much time and money goes into it I suppose.

From everything I've seen of the game that's the impression I get.

So if they do go for it then I don't think they should bother with remasters, but rather a remake or reboot or a sequel that makes a serious effort to get new people up to speed (like me).

*sigh*... I said I wouldn't get excited for anything at E3 this year. You guys are making this hard.

A Shenmue HD Remaster would have about the same effect as Grim Fandango Remastered.

It would be a fun treat for fans of the series and an interesting time capsule for anyone that wasn't around for the original, but it's not going to reignite interest in new Shenmue games. A lot of reactions will be stuff like "I can't believe you guys tolerated this problem or those features back then!" Much like how a lot of new Grim Fandango players marvel at obtuse advanture game puzzles.

I doubt this but cant help but hope. My heart cant take this!

TLG and Shenmue 3 bth at E3. That would be epic. Since we are fantasizing, imagine if Square re-announces FF7...But as a proper remake.

But most likely something like Ryo to be in SF5 etc.

The most logical interpretation of this is that he simply saw a forklift and thought of Shenmue. Of course Shenmuegaf sees it as a tease of Shenmue 1 through 8 all with AAAA budgets. Why why do you guys do this?

As for his presence at E3, he's in the industry whats so odd about him being there?

Why do they keep doing this to us.

"They" don't do anything. You guys do it to yourselves.

And what you're saying is probably correct. Still he has to be aware of what he did and the reaction it would cause.

That being said. I do wonder why he's at E3 lol.

With all the good sh** thats been happening lately (especially japanese localization wise)

I think atleast a remaster isnt such a far fetched idea

That's about all we can hope and expect at this point. I'd honestly buy it. I'd love to run through the games again but don't have any way of playing them.

The truth is Shemue 2's ending was just a dream. Ryo's still cleaning out some temples garage and trying, but failing, ta catch leaves between his fingers... ;_;

So basically they have to pretty much build the game from scratch if it's worth it at all, so it wouldn't be much cheaper than a sequel anyway!

I don't know.. 2 weeks ago my hype levels for all these mythical games was zero and I was confident nothing would change that but fast forward and somehow we are basically all assuming TLG is a dead cert and now Shenmue is at least "pretty likely". We're all screwed...

It's his baby. If things he sees in the real world remind him of his creation he can't share it on his twitter account? There are people who share their inane meals and daily morning shits.

If i created I dunno Harry Potter or something I'd probably tweet the random photo of an owl or train if it looked like the ones from the books. I wouldn't think i was teasing HP8 or something.

I don't want to censor tweeting habits, but tweeting a picture without commentary and during the hypest week of the year is a sure way to torture your fans!

I haven't played Grim Fandango but this sounds about right in regards to Shenmue 1 + 2. They were groundbreaking and very unique at the time but now? I dont know.

I feel the same way when I think about playing SNES or PS1 RPGs and remember bullshit like incessant random battles and save points. I know some modern RPGs intentionally try to include those things for authenticity but its all been done better over the years imo.

difference is the genre of Grim Fandango was never overly popular in the first place, save a few titles here and there.

The action adventure genre though? Probably far more popular now then it was back then.

And lets not forget Shenmue hit the Dreamcast and Xbox. Combined together that is 31 million unit sales. Not exactly a hotbed of sales potential on either system.

yea, I'm not getting my hopes up and just consider it a fun little tweet until I see some kind of announcement. (But good to see Yu at E3)

If something does come from this, I will be pleasantly surprise.
