Media Create Sales: Week 23, 2015 (Jun 1 - Jun 7)

I think first party platform holders are obviously more lenient about continuing franchises. I was just commenting on how people are celebrating this like it's a huge success. It's not. The game is doing well given the circumstances, but if this is the greatest success of the year for Nintendo, then it's a pretty shitty year!

Who, among MC threads frequent posters, said Splatoon is a huge success?

I think many people here, me included, are surprised by the numbers it's pulling in Japan, both in absolute terms (new IP potentially selling 400-500k is not bad at all) and relative terms (it's on Wii U, better than Pikmin and Super Mario 3D World, better than other new successful new IPs such as Bloodborne). Also, sell-through signals an on-going interest for the game, which is good, since we're approaching Summer and the game might keep selling well until September.

I was curious, as well, to know which 2-3m new IPs (comparable to Splatoon) were shut down. Maybe Alan Wake? Pikmin 1 and 2 sold less than 2m worldwide (when Nintendo was in a stronger position) and a new entry was released in 2013, plus some remastered editions that sold quite well.

I'm not sure why qualifiers such as "new IP" "comparable" "first party" and so on are being added to the statement that publishers have cancelled franchises that sell in the 2-3M range to contextualise Splatoon doing okay for what it is, but not particularly amazing in the grand scheme.

They have. Various Capcom franchises come to mind. Others are basically being morphed into lower risk models, like downloadable F2P.

10M is the new 5M. 2-3M is the new 1M. It's basically why Japanese publishers have fallen behind the curve.

EDIT: This of course, isn't the likely fate of something like Splatoon.

I wasn't really thinking of new IPs so much as how 2-3 million isn't a lot in the larger scheme of things. Stuff like Dead Space and Dead Rising are good examples of games which aren't super expensive (relatively!) and lasted several entries, but publishers didn't really feel they were super worthwhile anymore.

Honestly, I fail to see how those Capcom and EA franchises can be even remotely comparable to Splatoon. They were not, of course, AAA releases such as Call of Duty of Grand Theft Auto, but they were released on multiple platforms (or they became multiplatforms), had large teams, and their history was basically the same: publishers were happy of the results of the first entry (though with not-so-high sales, around 2m indeed), and then were probably less happy with the second entry. Dead Space was turned into a Gears of War rip-off, while Dead Rising became a MS exclusive (and Lost Planet was given to a bad Western team). They were shut down or put in hybernation because the risk of developing another one were too high / worthwhile.

The importance of Splatoon, as I have already written, is in showing how Nintendo can still be launch a new IP that is somehow successful. It's doing better numbers than Pikmin in a much more difficult market for Nintendo. It also shows that new internal developers are able to sell even outside the traditional franchises, which is all good.

Sales of course cannot be huge because of Wii U is in a bad position. I suspect, though, that if Splatoon were released on Wii it would have sold A LOT.

The new anime doesn't start until next month...

The fact that DBH:UM2 has been reappearing in the weekly chart since late May led me think that, even if the anime is starting next month, there might already be some anticipation which might drive some game sales.

The Sell-through blog reported a slower start than DBH:UM entries, but he hoped for better sales during the weekend.

Some other blogs reported slow first day sales too.

Japanese Splatfest for Splatoon brought the servers to their knees, lol. It also killed matchmaking in EU before NA woke up.

Gives us a decent glimpse into the population distribution for Splatoon.

It became hard to find matches in EU times without Japan overlapping and NA being asleep? When NA/Japan overlap its immediate, even without Japan, NA times can form matches fast. EU on its own when NA was asleep and Japan was in Splatfest, was underpopulated.

They are out of Rhythm Heaven stock in Bic Camera Hachioji, and advise people to get the download codes instead.

GamesMaya keeps reporting great sales for Splatoon and Rhythm Heaven.

Well, that's some great news.

By the way, CoroCoro confirms the second Yo-kai Watch movie will come out on December 19th in Japan. Guess we can expect Yo-kai Watch 3 on December 5th then.

Is that the debut or second week for PoPoLoCrois.

At this rate Splatoon could have a shot at the shooter crown LTD.

Lol, with Smash Bros huge DLC announced, does it going to be able to give any effect towards Smash Bros 3DS or Wii U sales here.^_^

Ryu especially is a very major character there. Not to mention he actually had special command input style for the character.^_^

Glad for Splatoon sales. If the game continues to be hot sales-wise, it could become a new million seller for the Wii U at the end of this year, and Japanese gaming in general.

I think he was referring to worldwide numbers.

Many IPs were shut down for doing 2-3 million, but how many were comparable to Splatoon in terms of development, advertisement, installed base?

I dont see how what other publishers do with their franchises compares to Nintendo at all. If we made those comparisons we would have yearly Mario Karts after the Wii version sold like 25 million. Nintendo doesn't follow other publishers leads when it comes to treatment of IP. So I wouldn't expect them to now either.

Since we're 10 days out, here's an update on Mobius.

iOS (iPhone):

It's not the kind of instant sustained (for the first month) top 10 success like we saw with Million Arthur, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, or Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light, but this is still well within the bounds where you see those titles go these days.

If we're here 10 days from now and see it at 40 and 10 more days see it at 60, things are probably going south. So far I don't think it's a concern though.

To my understanding, iPad sales are pretty small in Japan, so I usually don't make charts of those.

Android:

Here we see a very significant recovery from its slow start. I wonder if the did a delayed initial marketing push to help keep the stress down on their servers.

Definitely not showing signs of a top-10 killer release, and if it falls off fast I some what worry about how Sqeenix will view this as it is a pretty high profile release from them from the graphical and staff side of things. I wonder how its budget (initial) compares to the killer-10.

What I've heard of the title is mixed at best, boring/monotonous at worst.

vinnygambini

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
When was Persona 4 Dancing supposed to release in Japan again?

Same time as Fire Emblem If.

Mess.

Should have launched the week after. It would of had the week for itself (though it then would of launched in Q2 instead of Q1)..

I don't think there is that much of an overlap between rhythm games and FE games so I'd say both will do fine.

There's a big one
waifu
.

More seriously P4D is clearly aimed at the audience who bought Persona games, it just happened to be a spin-off rythm game but the vast majority of buyers will still be gamers who play JRPG so there's some kind of overlap between the next mainline Fire Emblem and "oh a spin off of Persona yet again, I might buy it but Fire Emblem is more tempting right now".

Not a huge overlap per see, but it certainly won't help P4D sales (no to mention the double version of If which will hurt the wallet)

This bump in COMG! stores only can mean that the game is going to hold that 50k next week, and that's pretty impressive.

Extreme Butouden overperforming in COMG! while it will bomb anyway. There hasn't been good comments about the game, so the game will underperform a lot.

Ya, you're right, it just seems to me that Mobius is a (much) higher profile title than any of their other games, but it may just be a perspective thing. The people behind it are big names and the game does look like a higher tier than the others.

Either way, I will be interested in seeing how this title does and, if possible, learning how its development compares to their other mobile titles.

Don't get me wrong. I mean, it will do good enough within its context, but there has been bad feedback about the game. Furthermore, Hiska wrote about some retailers reported slow sales for the game.

Possibly we will notice a drop in its second week, maybe.
